Abstract

This blue flag served as the regimental colors of the 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The United States arms is embroidered in the flag's center. The arms consists of a gold-colored bald eagle holding an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of seven arrows in its left talon. The eagle holds in its beak a painted, gold-outlined scroll with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." A shield with red and white stripes and a blue upper portion with white stars is positioned on the eagle's breast. Nine gold stars remain intact in a double-arc pattern above the arms (due to deterioration some stars have been lost). Above the stars are gray painted clouds with gold painted rays extending upwards from the clouds. Below the arms in a gold-outlined banner is the text: "30TH REGIMENT ... ". To the left of the arms is faded red text that reads: "CARNIFEX FERRY / SOUTH MOUNTAIN / ANTIETAM / VICKSBURG / ... ". Some of the text is no longer legible or intact due to deterioration. The flag has portions of gold fringe remaining on its top and bottom sides
