Abstract

These papers consist of letters (1892-1098) written by Earl J. Martin to his family during the time he worked as a cowboy on various ranches in Nebraska; South Dakota; and in Wibaux, Glendive, and Ekalaka, Montana.<br />The papers consist of letters (1892-1908) that were written by Earl J. Martin to his family. The letters contain descriptions of his work as a cowboy on various ranches in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana. (Small Collection 1648).

Donated by Ellen M. Boyer, Santa Clara, Calif., 1999, AC1999-19., Earl John Martin was born on February 10, 1880, to Everard Fortis Martin and Eunice Salina Hanchett, in Jefferson County, Nebraska. In 1898 he left home and lied about his age in order to join the army and fight in the Spanish American War. Following the war he worked as a cowboy in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana. On June 10, 1916 he married Arnette Ericson. Martin lived the remainder of his life in several towns in California, where he worked, primarily, handling livestock. He died in San Francisco, California, on February 9, 1960. He had one daugher.
