Abstract

Studies were completed of reference electrodes for use in liquid ammonia solutions, and a soft glass-Pyrex separator with microcracks was adapted for use in reference electrodes for pressurized cells. Redox potentials and overvoltage relationships were determined for various cathector and matrix materials in liquid ammonia solutions, the shifts of potentials on the various metals and pyrolytic graphite providing an indication of their relative merit for hardware cell use. Initial study of the S-NH3 system was conducted in neutral solutions with a Pt screen as the cathode, a Pt anode, and a Pb wire reference electrode in a three-compartment cell. Reduction efficiency was twice as great in NaSCN than in NaI ammoniate. Qualitative tests of solubility enhancement indicated that addition of either ethylamine or ethylenediamine to liquid ammoniates increases the solubility of sulfur in neutral solutions.
