Abstract

This report covers an investigation of pulse leveling techniques applicable to high power radar modulators. It defines the problem areas in achieving precise pulse shape control in high voltage and high power pulse generation and presents techniques for overcoming the difficulties defined. Significant contributions are made to the state-of-the-art through the gathering together of diverse information into one place. The attainment of precise pulse control in a high power radar modulator is the result of careful attention to all facets of transmitter operation as well as the design of the modulator itself. The energy state and response time properties of the entire power system extending from the primary power source through the video circuit of the RF amplifier load are examined in detail in an analysis of their effect on total modulator performance. Techniques for improving modulator performance based on this analysis are described and representative designs for a line type and hard tube modulator pulsing a linear beam are outlined. (Author)
