Abstract
- "During the fall of 2005, units of I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) were assigned responsibility for stability operations in Iraq's al-Anbar province and the Euphrates River Valley towns of Ramadi, Fallujah, Hit, and Haditha. The I MEF Marines were there to protect the Iraqi citizens against a complex mix of insurgent groups consisting of Saddam Hussein's former regime elements, foreign fighters traveling the Euphrates River Valley from Syria, and the Jordanian-born Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) leader Abu Musab al- Zarqawi. A Rifle Company from Camp Pendleton operated from a Forward Operating Base (FOB) together with the other companies from their parent battalion."--Introduction, page 4.
