Abstract

Shells are made of polished brass, each with an engraved swan in water, framed by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns attached to a single branch. On one shell, the branch has the inscription "KEMMEL", while on the other shell the branch is inscribed "YPRES."

Title by cataloger., Bottom of first shell has the inscriptions, "St", "SH" within a sun or sunburst, "8", "APR 1917", and "ANDr. 60". The SH monogram may indicate that the shell was manufactured by Siemens & Halske., Bottom of second shell has the inscriptions, "St 140", "PATRONENFABRIK KARLSRUHE" with exploding bomb symbols, "MAI 1915", and "Ke" with a crown symbol., While the headstamps do not indicate caliber, during World War I the Germans primarily used 77 mm shells.
