Artillery shell, decorated.

Publication Year :
1918

Abstract

Shell is made of dark, polished brass, with a fluted corset 7 cm from the base measuring 6 cm in diameter and a slightly flared top edge. The majority of the shell has been pebbled to reveal an embossed and engraved scene of St. George slaying the dragon, next to a large flower and leaves. At the top of the shell, Greek letters are inscribed very faintly and can be transliterated as "T. NThYM -ChAMAM-ChLAT". The first section is likely ENThYMI (transliterated; "Souvenir" in English), while the latter words may be a place name. At the bottom of the shell, below the corset, is another Greek inscription (transliterated): "VASILEIOS-D-PPsYChALINOS-KLASĒS-18-". The first section is likely a name, while the latter section may translate to "Class-18-" in English.

Notes :
Title by cataloger., Inscription title above has been transliterated according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Greek., Bottom of shell has the inscriptions, "E", what appears to be the Roman numeral "X", and "100.1918". Most of these inscriptions are faint and only partially legible, or obscured by an adhesive label., The headstamp does not seem to indicate size or place of manufacture, but the shell does match suspected 77 mm shells in size.
