Abstract

Benjamin O. Tyler writes from New York City to Alden Partridge in Norwich, Vermont, and sends a draft for his card for the Henry Clay Female Free Academy, a school modeled on the Free Academy of the City of New York but for women, which he hopes to establish; also gives an account of his misfortunes: he lost his property in Washington, D.C., by misplaced confidence; also met with losses at Springfield, Massachusetts, New York City, and Troy, New York; his wife is staying with her sister in Albany; he broke his knee in November 1846 and again in November 1847; asks Partridge for five dollars as he is destitute. Date of the letter as 8 April 1849 is assumed from postmark.<br />Transcription by Raymond Bouchard. Transcriptions may be subject to error.
