Abstract

The aim of this essay was to examine women who had their first child in the ages of 18-19 years old and their experiences of being a young mother in the Helsingborg municipality and to examine if there is any support for these women in the Helsingborg municipality. The method was based on a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews with three mothers and two professional social workers. The main outcomes from this study was that teen-mums are feeling stigmatized in the Helsingborg municipality and also that the support from family, partners and friends are important for teen-mums. All of the mothers in this essay showed a good mental health and they had a strong self-image in relation to their role as a mother. Another outcome showed that there is none support specific for young mothers in the Helsingborg municipality. The theoretical perspective that was used as an approach in the empirical analysis was Goffman and his theory about stigma.
