Abstract
- Allergic diseases are a major health problem in the school years with noticeable increase in both prevalence and incidence. Complications arise not only affect the biological aspect but also in the quality of life. The study was designed to determine the values of total serum IgE Microplate schoolchildren of both sexes in the city of Cuenca, between 6 and 12 years of age and their correlation with the following risk factors: geographical location, environmental exposure, exposure smoke snuff, drugs, foods, food additives, household dust, pollen, animals and insects. Of which 182 schoolchildren symptoms and clinical signs of developing allergies, representing 20.2 %, a survey of 900 children attending 13 public and private schools in the city of Cuenca was applied. The processing of the samples was performed at the Clinical Laboratory Diagnostic Center and Biomedical Research, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Cuenca, applying biosecurity measures and quality control. IgE values considered normal ranges from 0-86 IU / ml , 58% of children with allergies have higher than normal values. There is a statistically significant relationship (p < 0.05) between high IgE levels with the following risk factors studied: exposure to cigarette smoke, contact with household pets, ingestion of food dyes and exposure to humid environments, closed and dusty.
