Abstract

Globalization is a concept with deep roots in communication and media scholarship. Definitions of globalization generally refer to its relationship to changes in consciousness and experience that arise from access to global communication technologies. In considering the significance of globalization in the field of digital media and communication studies, three issues present themselves as being of fundamental importance. The question thus arises about the extent to which the questions surrounding media globalization are fundamentally transformed by the Internet environment. The key questions here are whether globalization and the Internet are working in tandem to weaken the power and capacities of nation-states, and whether they are transforming the global political economy away from a historic system of states. In the field of international relations, some have argued that globalization and the Internet point in the direction of a 'new medievalism' in world affairs, fundamentally challenging nation-state sovereignty.
