Abstract

DC Microgrids (DCMGs) have been researched and developed in order to integrate and facilitate power distribution in remote, rural, industrial, and mining sites. Despite physical implementation and protection issues, power distribution control of DCMGs has been challenging due to the environmental and internal disturbances as well as the complexity of power transmission and distribution networks. In this research, two types of DCMGs: single-bus and ring-bus are studied. The control challenges and the commonly used control topologies in DCMGs are also reviewed. Furthermore, the critical benefits and limitations of reviewed control topologies are compared and discussed. The outcome of this paper is focused on helping researchers to gain better insight into DCMGs' control and to select the best control method for their studies in DCMGs.
