Abstract

The Newman geological sheet is bounded by latitudes 23 and 24 degrees S and longitudes 118 degrees 30 minutes and 120 degrees E. Newman is the only town in the area. The geology of the following areas is discussed: Hamersley Basin; Ashburton Basin; Blair Basin; Bresnahan Basin; and Bangemall Basin. Alluvial gold is found at Deadman Flat associated with greenstone belt fragments at the southern margin of the Sylvania Inlier. Copper occurs within uppermost Jeerinah Formation shale in the Wonmunna area. In 1953 the prospect produced 13.53 t copper ore (25.6% Cu) and 5.96 t of cupreous ore (23.7% Cu). Later drilling failed to find intersections of greater than 3.43% Cu. Other small prospects occur near Junction Well on Bulloo Downs. Galena and cerussite, together with copper minerals, occur in the Prairie Downs Fault. Mineralisation occurs in veins up to 2 m wide in zones up to 60 m long. Assays are up to 32.4% Pb, 11.3% Zn and 2.69% Cu. Uranium mineralisation occurs in arkose in the Bresnahan Group, 16 km north-northwest of Turee Creek Homestead. Uranyl phosphates and silicates occur in a 500 000 t body grading about 0.05% U3O8. Hamersley rocks lie within the Hamersley Iron Province. Iron ore is produced from Mount Whaleback and Marra Mamba. Other major deposits occur at Orebody 24, Eastern Ridge, Rhodes Ridge, Giles Mini, Parallel Ridge, Wonmunna, Angelo River and West Angelas. Red ochre was briefly mined in the Boolgeeda Iron Formation and the Weeli Wolli Formation. A seam of crocidolite occurs in a tributary gorge to Coondiner Creek. Chrysoprase has been mined from the southern margin of the Sylvania Inlier.<br />The Newman geological sheet is bounded by latitudes 23 and 24 degrees S and longitudes 118 degrees 30 minutes and 120 degrees E.
