Abstract
- 2022 is going to be a challenging year for the phosphates market. The main two issues that will continue to affect the market for another year will be supply and affordability. The phosphates market started the year with tight availability, as product from China and Russia is scarce. China has banned phosphates export until June 2022 which has created a global tight availability issue and has led to prices skyrocketing. Supply from Russia is muted as well. In November 2021, Russia issued export quotas for fertiliser producers. The move was aimed at curbing inflation and ensuring reliable supply to farmers. Phosphates demand is expected to be firm at least for 1Q22. Demand, however will also depend on raw material prices. According to the IFA, new legal frameworks are going to affect the phosphates industry. Last but not least, the fertiliser market in 2022 will be shaped by geopolitical issues. The imposing of sanctions on Belarus by the EU and the US has affected the export output for raw materials, like potash, and the production of complex fertilisers. The uncertainty over further sanctions and continuing unrest in the region is causing an imbalance in the fertiliser market and export supply.<br />2022 is going to be a challenging year for the phosphates market.
