La obra del escultor Andrés de Carvajal para la Escuela de Cristo de Estepa (Sevilla)

This paper deals with the documented analysis of the three sculptures made by Andrés de Carvajal for the old oratory of Christ’s School of Estepa, today integrated into the nearby church of The Assumption. These representations of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Joseph with the Child and Saint Philip Neri, have all been considered by historiography as works attributed to the sculptor from Antequera, without delving into the existing handwritten records and the aesthetic, iconographic and comparative examination. Thus, we seek to appraise the interest of such pieces since they form an undeniable part of the author’s catalogue, while including their workmanship within the historic movement of the institution, committed to completing its altar with the altarpiece executed by the woodcarver Juan Ramírez from Écija.
El presente trabajo aborda el análisis documentado de las tres esculturas que realizó Andrés de Carvajal para el antiguo oratorio de la Escuela de Cristo de Estepa, hoy integradas en la aledaña iglesia de la Asunción. Se trata de las representaciones de la Inmaculada Concepción, San José con el Niño y San Felipe Neri, consideradas todas ellas por la historiografía como obras atribuidas al escultor antequerano, sin profundizar en los registros manuscritos existentes y el examen estético, iconográfico y comparativo. De esta manera, se busca poner en valor el interés de tales piezas al formar parte del catálogo indudable del autor, al tiempo que incluimos su hechura dentro del movimiento histórico de la institución empeñada en completar su altar con el retablo ejecutado por el entallador astigitano Juan Ramírez.
