Abstract

Juvenile crime has become a significant social problem. This issue is highlighted in the media and political debates, so we have chosen to study Juvenile crime. In our study, we will investigate the risk and protective factors for young people and how these have influenced their criminal life choices. We will apply a qualitative research method using semi-structured interviews. Our empirical material has been collected from our six respondents. In the study, we will examine the risk and protective factors and explore whether the respondents believed that their criminal behavior could have been prevented in any way. Based on the respondents' answers, we have found that several factors can contribute to criminal behavior. Various risk factors, such as unfavorable family relationships, poor relations with parents, living environment, school environment, peer associations, mental health, and high-risk environments, can increase the likelihood of youths committing crimes. The more risk factors a young person is exposed to, the higher the risk of criminality. The results of this study are important in social work because, by identifying and understanding these risk and protective factors, society can better allocate resources to prevent youth crime.
