Abstract

This study investigates the Danish suprasegmental stød as a falling tone in Jutland. Previous research on the phonetics of stød has mainly focused on standard Danish spoken in Copenhagen, and it has mostly been described as a kind of creaky voice, glottal plosive or laryngalization (Basbøll, 2003; Grønnum, 2005). In dialectal studies of stød, a geographical line through Denmark is described. Areas North of the line have stød and areas south of the line do not, even though some of these areas have tonal systems related to stød. Kyst (2008) is the first to describe stød as a falling tone in certain syllables in the city of Aarhus, but it has prior to this study never been described as a general tendency for all of Jutland. The experiment consists of 12 people from different parts of Jutland, who relatively recently moved to Copenhagen. They all read the same 48-word wordlist aloud and afterwards they are asked a few questions on their affiliation towards Jutland. The results show that the tonal stød can occur in every part of Jutland included in the experiment. In monosyllabic words it mostly occurs on morphophonological closed syllables with long, strong vowels. There are a few exceptions to this when the strong vowel is short around |-d| and |-r| when realized as a diphthong. The most likely explanation to this is that these words until recently had long, strong vowels as well. Therefore, it can possibly explain a relative chronology on the shortenings of these vowels and the emergence of tonal stød as well. The dissyllabic words all have examples of tonal stød no matter what is between the nuclei of the syllables.
