Digital Divide: Opportunities and Shortcomings during the Pandemic

The transformation caused worldwide by the pandemic forced all sectors to take measures to face it. Education was no exception. In an eminent face-to-face modality, all the countries -prepared or not- put their activities remotely. The objective of this essay was to analyze the opportunities and shortcomings of remote education provided during the pandemic, especially in developing countries such as Peru. The opportunities that have become evident thanks to virtual education where large companies from around the world have made different work software available with the intention of making the adaptation process easier are reviewed; and the challenges and shortcomings that both teachers and students have had to overcome to adapt to this new normality, the same ones that range from lack of hardware, software, digital literacy and in some cases taking advantage of the resources available as well as emphasizing the pending tasks that are in a constant process of improvement due to the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that pushed us to the much-needed transition to virtuality.
La transformación ocasionada a nivel mundial por la pandemia obligó a todos los sectores a tomar medidas que permitieran afrontarla. La educación no fue la excepción. De una eminente modalidad presencial, todos los países -preparados o no- pusieron en remoto sus actividades. El objetivo de este ensayo fue analizar las oportunidades y carencias de la educación remota brindada durante la pandemia, sobre todo en países en desarrollo como lo es el Perú. Se revisan las oportunidades que se han evidenciado gracias a la educación virtual donde grandes empresas de todo el mundo han puesto a disposición distintos softwares de trabajo con la intención de hacer más ligero el proceso de adaptación; y los retos y carencias que tanto docentes como estudiantes han tenido que superar para adaptarse a esta nueva normalidad, los mismos que van desde falta de hardware, software, alfabetización digital y en algunos casos aprovechar los recursos con que se cuenta así como enfatizar en las tareas pendientes que se encuentran en constante proceso de mejora debido a la coyuntura ocasionada por la pandemia por COVID-19 que nos empujó a la tan necesaria transición a la virtualidad.
