Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyse how the construction industry can work towards a digitalized workflow by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in the pre-construction phase. The construction industry is far behind other industries in progress and must keep up to stay relevant and competitive. Furthermore, the study intends to investigate the challenges and added value that arise from the use of AI in the pre-construction phase of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning- systems (HVAC-systems). Additionally, the study seeks to analyse how AI can address time constraints and identify solutions that promote a more efficient workflow. The main purpose of this study is to utilize an AI tool to showcase its potential capabilities. Method: This work is based on two different methodologies, a literature study, and a case study. The literature study has been conducted to investigate the current state and future expectations within AI, as well as how the implementation can streamline the pre-construction phase. The case study is based on a study object as well as an AI tool to analyse the object. Interviews are also included in the case study to add a deeper discussion. Results: The results present a variety of different aspects along with associated challenges regarding the possible use of an AI application in an early pre-construction phase. Two main dimensions have been distinguished, efficiency and time. Regarding efficiency, theoretical value is demonstrated through a literary study. However, according to the case study, these benefits are not currently present due to an early stage of development. Based on the interviews, an indication of potential with further progress is shown. Furthermore, the aspect of time is a significant advantage that substantiates the use. A challenge arises from the fact that a reorganization also entails a significant investment of time, which complicates the decision. Based on the interviews, this investment is decisive regarding
