Abstract
- This book, a revised and expanded English version of the author's Italian work "La Linguistica strutturale" (1961), is a survey of the main trends in structural linguistics intended not only for the linguist but for specialists in other fields and the general reader as well. The initial chapter, "Introductory Notions," discusses general linguistic problems. Subsequent chapters are devoted to: Ferdinand de Saussure, the Prague School (N.S. Trubetzkoi), the Copenhagen School (Louis Hjelmslev), the early development of American structuralism (Edward Sapir and Leonard Bloomfield), functional linguistics (Andre Martinet and Roman Jakobson), American structural linguistics (the Neo-Bloomfieldians), transformational grammar (Noam Chomsky), and mathematical linguistics and machine translation.
