Abstract

A study looked at the effects of simulated encounters with instrumental music teaching problems upon the attitudes of instrumental music majors toward teaching and toward music teaching. Videotapes of critical teaching situations were developed and presented to an experimental group of college music majors workshop. A pretest-posttest control group design was used. The experimental group showed a significant increase in positive attitudes toward pupils and toward teaching careers in music, especially among freshman and sophomore students. A second posttest, administered after a delay of thirty days, revealed no significant differences between the experimental and control groups. On the basis of the study application of simulation techniques and more extensive use of videotape in music teacher education were recommended. (JY)
