Abstract

This paper identifies salient features of scholarship and statesmanship that are required to bring about constructive momentum from the ferment in which today's teacher educators are operating. After brief comments on the nature of the ferment found in the general environment, the ferment in teacher education is illustrated through two examples. The foci selected for discussion are (a) one attempt to enhance the quality of teacher education and (b) the current struggle for power and control in the field of teacher education. In each case, a look at alternative ways teacher educators interact with the fast-moving elements in the ferment leads to recommendations about scholarship and statesmanship that could bring about constructive momentum.
