Abstract

The question of human motivation has presented today's leader a major challenge. The young worker finds many of his basic needs fulfilled in an easier manner than previous generations; therefore, he strives for higher levels of self-fulfillment. This essay develops three motivational theories, and their relevant motivating factors are discussed. The understanding of the motivating factors by today's leaders at all levels is important in establishing an organizational climate in which a subordinate's motivational requirements and individual growth can be achieved. Examples of what industry has tried to improve, motivation and job satisfaction, and what today's younger generation has to say about motivational factors are interwoven into various sections of the paper. In final analysis, some approaches to developing a sound motivational system are suggested for use by military leaders in varying situations. (NTIS)
