Research on Educational Measurement and Testing in New Zealand.

This review of the research on educational measurement and testing in New Zealand uses the institutional setting of the research as its framework. Following an historical overview dating back to the work of Norman McKenzie in 1927, sections of the review deal with research conducted by: (1) university staff; (2) university students; (3) Department of Education; (4) teachers in the schools; (5) teachers' colleges; (5) armed services; (6) other agencies; and (7) New Zealand Council for Educational Research. Despite New Zealand's remoteness and isolation from world centers of test development and research, the country has managed to remain well informed of oversea developments largely through articles in scholarly journals, reports disseminated by large research organizations, and through active participation by New Zealand researchers on study or training leave with overseas institutions. With the growth of a greater research capability within the Department of Education and the establishment of the Test Development Division by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, tests or assessment devices designed to fulfill particular functions have been developed specifically for New Zealand conditions.
