Abstract

This pamphlet on program planning is the second of 16 in a series to provide leaders in adult activities with sound introductory material to give practical help in using a method of adult education or working in a particular area. Its objective is to help leaders develop programs suited to their groups and group aims. Eleven articles and how-tos are included. "Obstacles to Overcome" and "What's in a Program?" point out some problems that leaders might overlook if they are accustomed to thinking primarily about content. "The Planning Committee" makes some important suggestions for helping such a group to decide on its functions and get down to work. Three articles by Malcolm Knowles contain practical step-by-step suggestions for developing and maintaining a program that takes into account participant interests and group goals. They are entitled "Finding Group Interests,""What are Your Goals?," and "Evaluating the Program.""Checklist of Program Methods" has the same focus. "Speaker or Panel" and "Briefing List for Moderators and Panel Members" are intended to help the leader in thinking through some specific problems of program development. The final brief article, "Participation for Democracy," discusses relationships between participation in planning and maintenance of a democratic way of living. Sources for program materials are overviewed. (YLB)
