Teacher Stress: Issues and Intervention.

This paper examines the problem of stress within the teacher's environment and ways in which teachers can manage stress. The components of the stress process are identified in terms of the sources of stress and teachers' response to stress. Sources include the events or characteristics of the environmental situation and life events, occupational demands, and other life adjustments the teacher encounters. A comparison is made between two stress management techniques: the global approach and the individual approach. In this comparison, the two methods of stress management training were examined in regard to whether one would result in more action and change by teachers than the other. Results indicated that the teachers trained in the individual approach reported that they significantly increased the time spent on managing their stress, and used more diversity in applying methods to alter major stressors.
