Abstract

This report provides an overview of the phenomenon of early school leaving through presentation and discussion of relevant research issues, concerns, and retention strategies for potential leavers. It includes a brief review of the current literature with an emphasis on Canadian and Saskatchewan research. The extent of the early school leaving problem and its effect on dropouts' lives, the economy, and society are examined. Issues involved with early school leaving rates, in particular, the need for accurate data collection and for a uniform definition for dropout/early school leaver, are addressed. The characteristics of the early school leaver (family/background, personal, and school-related) are explored and the dropout's reasons for leaving school before completing grade 12 are discussed. Characteristics of effective dropout prevention strategies are identified, along with some Saskatchewan initiatives in regard to dropout prevention and re-entry. The report concludes by offering suggestions and recommendations to encourage student retention in Saskatchewan. A bibliography of 187 citations is included. (NB)
