Abstract

This directory lists 151 programs in alternative farming systems (systems that aim at maintaining agricultural productivity and profitability, while protecting natural resources, especially sustainable, low-input, regenerative, biodynamic or organic farming and gardening). It includes programs conducted by colleges and universities, research institutes, and private farms and organizations. Information about the institutions and organizations listed in this directory was compiled from a number of sources. Two criteria were used for selection: (1) an institution's involvement in organic, alternative, or sustainable agriculture; and (2) its focus on education, training, or provision of information. Most entries are from the United States, with a few entries from Canada. Each listing includes name and address of the institution, name and telephone number of a contact person, and a short description of the program. The directory also lists five national and regional contacts for the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. (KC)
