Abstract
- Noting that some forms of solitude may reflect maladaptation, while others may not, this book seeks to promote better understanding of the developmental meanings, causes, and courses of social solitude in childhood. The five sections of the book cover conceptual and methodological issues; biological and familial factors; social behaviors, skills, and relationships; peer and self perceptions; and longitudinal perspectives on social withdrawal and inhibition. The book's 15 chapters are: (1) "Social Withdrawal, Inhibition, and Shyness in Childhood: Conceptual and Definitional Issues" (Rubin and Asendorpf); (2) "On the Temperamental Categories of Inhibited and Uninhibited Children" (Kagan and others) (3) "Childhood Temperament and Cerebral Asymmetry: A Neurobiological Substrate of Behavioral Inhibition" (Davidson); (4) "Antecedents and Consequences of Shyness in Boys and Girls: A 6-Year Longitudinal Study" (Engfer); (5) "Pathways to Aggression and Social Withdrawal: Interactions among Temperament, Attachment, and Regulation" (Fox and Calkins); (6) "Wariness to Strangers: A Behavior Systems Perspective Revisited" (Stevenson-Hinde and Shouldice); (7) "Socialization Factors in the Development of Social Withdrawal" (Mills and Rubin); (8) "Inhibition and Children's Experiences of Out-of-Home Care" (Broberg); (9) "Features of Speech in Inhibited and Uninhibited Children" (Rezendes and others) (10) "Communicative Competence as a Dimension of Shyness" (Evans); (11) "Children's Perceptions of Social Withdrawal: Changes across Age" (Younger and others) (12) "Social Withdrawal in Childhood: Considering the Child's Perspective" (Hymel and others) (13) "Beyond Temperament: A Two-Factorial Coping Model of the Development of Inhibition during Childhood" (Asendorpf); (14) "The Waterloo Longitudinal Project: Correlates and Consequences of Social Withdrawal from Childhood to Adolescence" (Rubin); and (15) "Victimization by Peers: Antecedents and Long-Term Outcomes" (Olweus). References are included with each chapter. (TJQ)
