Abstract
- This book features more than 70 stories about the wide range of the Black experience, including traditional tales from Africa and the West Indies. Collected in the book are family stories and moral fables, ghost stories and tales rich in humor, as well as raps and rhymes, memoirs and songs, recipes and riddles, and stories and poems about freedom, protest, and change. In this collection, voices spanning centuries, continents, and cultures blend to celebrate the African-American storytelling tradition. Among the storytellers included in the book are: Langston Hughes, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Cade Bambara, and Rex Ellis. A resource bibliography lists books of general information; books of personal and family narrative; Caribbean folktale collections; African and African-American folktale collections; books for young readers, grades K-5; and books for young readers, grade 5 and up. An index of selected stories in the book appropriate for children is also attached. (NKA)
