Abstract

This document is based on transcripts of recorded informal interviews with: (1) selected senior professors in the library schools at Warsaw, Krakow, and Wroclaw (Poland); (2) the director and a member of the Books and Readers Institute of the National Polish Libraries; and (3) a group of Polish librarians and students in the field. The report incorporates feedback and suggestions from the participants themselves. It provides background on the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland and summarizes interviewees' opinions topics such as the development of a philosophy of librarianship; the educational and cultural role of libraries; impacts of the social and political climate on libraries; government interference in communications; library research methodology; and various aspects of library work. Appendices include a list of Polish translations of selected library science terms, some Polish excerpts from the author's research correspondence, and some addenda. (Contains 49 references.) (BEW)
