Abstract

The issues of this quarterly publication and year end supplement contain professional articles on topics that concern at risk youth and emphasize preventive measures. Number 1 highlights the challenges facing gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth in schools. Many schools have nothing in their curricula to help provide an understanding of these issues due to the politics and cultural misunderstandings of sexual identity. Number 2 focuses on teenage tobacco use, an important public health concern. It contains an overview of the prevention strategies that have attempted to discourage youth tobacco use and explains the social influence model that entices youth to regular smoking is explained. Volume 3 looks at the prevalence and history of homeless youth. It includes an examination of the educational needs of middle school homeless youth. Number 4 considers many issues surrounding teenage depression including how to recognize it; the impact of race identity on depression; gender differences; risk factors; and resilience. The annual supplement features a question and answer session on the topic of teenage self injurious behavior. It also contains book reviews and numerous web resources and publications. A cumulative topic index is included that reflects the past 8 years of the publication. (Contains 15 tables.) (JDM)
