Abstract
- Based on a nationwide survey of more than 1,000 adolescents 13 to 17 years old and drawing on the experiences of the 17-year-old author, this book explores social labeling and what it means to adolescents. The book is presented in three parts. Part 1, "What's in a Label?" explains what labels are and how they develop. Part 2, "How Labels Make People Feel," describes the positive and negative emotions that accompany labels. Part 3, "What You Can Do about Labeling," includes ideas for helping adolescents break the labeling habit and ways they can help others to do the same. Each chapter of the book includes quotations from Teen Labels Survey respondents; incorporates first-person stories from teens regarding labels, cliques, and social pressures; and offers questions for self-reflection. (Contains 36 references.) (KB)
