Abstract
- Vocabulary is central to English language teaching. Without sufficient vocabulary, students cannot understand others or express their own ideas. Teachers who find the task of teaching English vocabulary a little daunting are not alone! This book presents important issues from recent vocabulary research and theory so that teachers may approach teaching vocabulary in a principled, thoughtful way. Topics covered are understanding vocabulary, importance of vocabulary, relevant research findings, students' vocabulary levels, and teaching vocabulary effectively. This easy-to-follow guide is practical for teachers in any context and provides helpful reflections that offer ideas for their own vocabulary teaching. Following a preface, the contents include: (1) Vocabulary and Its Importance in Language Learning; (2) Understanding Vocabulary: A L2 Perspective; (3) Research Into Practice: Tips for Vocabulary Needs; (4) Getting to Know Your Students and Their Vocabulary Needs; and (5) Putting It Together: Vocabulary Teaching Guidelines. References are also included.
