Abstract

"Indigenous Children's Survivance in Public Schools" examines the cultural, social, and political terrain of Indigenous education by providing accounts of Indigenous students and educators creatively navigating the colonial dynamics within public schools. Schools and districts can create community around texts like "Indigenous Children's Survivance in Public Schools" to counter colonialism and provide a more just and affirming education for Indigenous youth. Reading guides can help foster critical reflection and facilitate engagement with the book. This reading guide was developed to accompany "Indigenous Children's Survivance in Public Schools." It includes: (1) a list of core themes addressed in the text; (2) a pre-reading prompt for each chapter; (3) a brief recap and key points from each chapter; (4) a set of reflective questions to help make meaning of the text in relation to one's own life and practice as an educator; (5) mapping activities that ask one to identify colonialism and survivance in the text and local educational context. Dialogue and reflection in community are important ways to make meaning and deepen engagement with the text. The guide provides prompts and group activities to support readers as they discuss each chapter.
