Abstract

Provides a history of disciplinary discourse in English studies. Reveals that this new kind of writing--self-conscious, reflective prose--is creating a new "life form" in academic culture. Suggests that in order to recognize this culture, educators need to conduct research into the language academics use to define, describe, and change their work. (SG)
