- Abstract
The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership invited papers related to responsible leadership from a trans-disciplinary perspective involving the social and natural sciences. Subsequent to a lengthy review process, fifteen authors were invited to present at the the 3rd International Conference on Responsible Leadership; from these, five papers were finally selected to appear in this Special Edition.Management, leadership, and business knowledge by itself cannot ensure a sustainable and equitable future. What is needed is an integration of knowledge about responsible leadership across disciplinary boundaries, ranging from management studies and the physical sciences, to law, the humanities and social science. Only by integrating across current disciplinary boundaries can we find hope for generating what has been termed “earth system governance”, a way for humanity to manage the complexities of the world to create a just, equitable, and sustainable world for all.The five papers included in this special edition provide insight into responsible leadership and the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue in an interconnected and complex world. The perspectives converge to give us focused insights on responsible leadership as an emerging discourse, confirming the importance of bridging science, business and politics, and the role that responsible leadership plays in this.

- Abstract
Large Systems Change (LSC) is a field of study and action that is characterized by its focus on transformational pathways towards a participative, flourishing future through inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches that value engagement with practitioners and those aspiring for such futures. Its emergence holds great promise for addressing critical issues. Advancing its development requires aggressiveness to cross the many disciplinary, institutional and other boundaries and build the necessary scale of effort; however, humbleness is also required to recognize that although we have substantial knowledge and methodologies for approaching LSC, we are still at early stages of their development. The papers in this Special Issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship focus on the question of how to scale to the field of LSC. We can see the contributors and editors reflect on this at the three levels: broadening by increasing the numbers of people and organizations identified with it; going up and out with a more receptive environment arising with failures of traditional management approaches; and deepening of knowledge and methods for supporting LSC. This Special Issue will be essential reading for those researching in this emerging field, and practitioners looking for the latest thinking on how LSC may be a solution to global challenges.

- Abstract
This book offers an up-to-date and comprehensive picture of the Vietnamese economy, which is the fast-growing economy in Southeast Asia. The country has invested heavily in education, health, and development infrastructure across the country. Progress in recent decades has been strong and Vietnam has attracted significant relocation and outsourcing of production from The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. In the recent years, much of the foreign direct investment from China has been channeled to Vietnam. The state's development policy has created optimal conditions for further expansion of production, supply chain, education and finances. Investment in education, health, infrastructure, administration and regulations is facilitating investment inflows, technology transfer and spillover to the growing national companies. The educated young population and disciplined labor force have provided a strong basis for the growth of the economy. The high level of productivity, improved quality of products, low and competitive cost of production, and over 100 million people provide a strong base for a continuous economic growth. This edited volume, brings together selected papers presented at The 5th International Conference on Business (ICB 2023), providing good insights into the features of the economy and its development potential. They provide an up-to-date overview and an empirical research-based picture of the recent trends in Vietnam's economic development. The book would be a useful read for educators, undergraduate and graduate students, domestic and foreign investors, government agencies, provincial and industrial sector decision-makers, trade partners, libraries, individual researchers, and professional and practitioners. It helps to fill the gap in knowledge and inform development planners and investors about different sectors of the Vietnamese economy and its development potential.

- Abstract
A timely investigation of the potential economic effects, both realized and unrealized, of artificial intelligence within the United States healthcare system. In sweeping conversations about the impact of artificial intelligence on many sectors of the economy, healthcare has received relatively little attention. Yet it seems unlikely that an industry that represents nearly one-fifth of the economy could escape the efficiency and cost-driven disruptions of AI. The Economics of Artificial Intelligence: Health Care Challenges brings together contributions from health economists, physicians, philosophers, and scholars in law, public health, and machine learning to identify the primary barriers to entry of AI in the healthcare sector. Across original papers and in wide-ranging responses, the contributors analyze barriers of four types: incentives, management, data availability, and regulation. They also suggest that AI has the potential to improve outcomes and lower costs. Understanding both the benefits of and barriers to AI adoption is essential for designing policies that will affect the evolution of the healthcare system.

- Abstract
With the Brexit referendum more than 50% of the British population voted in favour of the UK leaving the EU. Since that event, much speculation has been about Brexit impact on the global economy, also affecting the insurance market. Existing papers and literature indicate potential significant Brexit implications on the structure of the European insurance market due to the loss of the European Passport, the European Solvency II supervisory regime, as well as on stock prices of insurance companies based in the EU and UK, but so far there is no holistic view on this topic. The dissertation aims to bring together the fragmentary information on Brexit implications for the European insurance market, develop methodological approaches further, conduct new analyses, and reflect a holistic picture of the impact of Brexit on the European insurance market, focusing on the structure of the European insurance market, stock market reactions and the Solvency II supervisory regime.

This is not a definitive history of corporate citizenship but for anyone interested in the who, what, why and how of this subject there are some very significant papers which may become definitive for scholars and reflective practitioners. Just as many people cannot imagine a world without mobile telephony and the Internet, and seem not to care or wonder how we got here, so too it is forgotten that much that is now taken for granted in terms of corporate reporting and accountability has been, and still is, the result of a hard struggle.

- Abstract
In the last decades, machine learning techniques – especially techniques of deep learning – led to numerous successes in many application areas, including economics. The use of machine learning in economics is the main focus of this book; however, the book also describes the use of more traditional econometric techniques. Applications include practically all major sectors of economics: agriculture, health (including the impact of Covid-19), manufacturing, trade, transportation, etc. Several papers analyze the effect of age, education, and gender on economy – and, more generally, issues of fairness and discrimination. We hope that this volume will:help practitioners to become better knowledgeable of the state-of-the-art econometric techniques, especially techniques of machine learning, and help researchers to further develop these important research directions. We want to thank all the authors for their contributions and all anonymous referees for their thorough analysis and helpful comments.

- Abstract
Makes Japanese sources accessible in EnglishAlthough much of the work on Japanese economic history is inaccessible to Westerners, many of Japan's leading economic historians have published widely in English. Combined with the work of Western economists who can utilize Japanese-language sources, this series assembles a wide range of English-language articles on the key issues in Japanese economic development. Individual volumes cover the interwar period, postwar reconstruction and growth, the textile industry, demographics, agriculture, trade, and the rise of commerce and'protoindustry'in the Tokugawa era. Aninformation-packed classroom and research resource An introductory essay in each volume discusses the significance of the articles, compares various economic development in Japan with those in other countries, and puts studies in the context of similar studies in Europe. A versatile research resource, this 7-volume set is a veritable gold mine of hard-to-find information and data from diverse sources and a godsend to everyone interested in comparative economic and social history. Professors will appreciate the collection because it gives them instant access to less familiar English-language sources and is an easy way to introduce students to doing their own research. Students will appreciate the many articles as a mother lode of information for reports and papers. Researchers will be pleased by the coverage of more than three centuries of Japanese history and life.

- Abstract
How inflation and deflation fears shape American democracy. Many foundational moments in American economic history—the establishment of paper money, wartime price controls, the rise of the modern Federal Reserve—occurred during financial panics as prices either inflated or deflated sharply. The government's decisions in these moments, intended to control price fluctuations, have produced both lasting effects and some of the most contentious debates in the nation's history. A sweeping history of the United States'economy and politics, Shock Values reveals how the American state has been shaped by a massive, ever-evolving effort to insulate its economy from the real and perceived dangers of price fluctuations. Carola Binder narrates how the pains of rising and falling prices have brought lasting changes for every generation of Americans. And with each brush with price instability, the United States has been reinvented—not as a more perfect union, but as a reflection of its most recent failures. Shock Values tells the untold story of prices and price stabilization in the United States. Expansive and enlightening, Binder recounts the interest-group politics, legal battles, and economic ideas that have shaped a nation from the dawn of the republic to the present.

20. For Your Information : About Information, the Universe and the Modern Age
- Author
-
Philip Tetlow and Philip Tetlow
- Abstract
In recent times, physicists have come to appreciate information's central role in the universe's grand plan. That and the fact that an explicit understanding of the informational relationships involved may well be key to unlocking many of the universe's deepest secrets. That makes the birth of both Computer and Information Science not only essential to the explosion of modern technological success, but also to our understanding of reality itself. In recognizing that, what unfolds is a story not only about Alan Turing and his pioneering colleagues, but also great thinkers like Albert Einstein, Michael Faraday, Ludwig Wittgenstein and others. It therefore pulls in much of modern history and touches on seminal events like the birth of the atomic bomb. It also hints at the reasons behind the various social and political divides we see in the world today. So, in many ways, the story of how we became more informed about information is also the story of the modern age. What you will read of here is the role that information plays in that ongoing saga and many of the twists and turns that have brought us to where we are with information today. In it you will learn that, unbeknown to Turing and others, their work would not only help overthrow the Nazis and thaw the chilling atmosphere of the Cold War to come, but also echo down the ages to remain relevant in a conflict still raging today. That sees the Computer and Information Scientists at loggerheads as they fight to find a right and justifiable place for meaning in information's definition. About The Open Group Press The Open Group Press is an imprint of The Open Group for advancing knowledge of information technology by publishing works from individual authors within The Open Group membership that are relevant to advancing The Open Group mission of Boundaryless Information Flow™. - Abstract
Manufacturing companies around the world, large and small, in developed and developing regions, tend to suffer from the inefficiencies of a cost-simulated, early pricing process for new products. Often, however, solutions to the complex challenges of the manufacturing industry lie at the intersection of social science and technology, where intelligent manufacturing plays a crucial role. Providing a deep review of innovative scientific technologies and knowledge, this edited collection delves into cost-cutting technologies in manufacturing planning processes that combine with social technologies to stimulate the development of organisational innovations. Chapters explore the solutions that artificial intelligence, data science, and knowledge management systems provide in order to resolve the problems posed by early cost estimation. Drawing on detailed examples from the furniture manufacturing businesses, they offer a new way of industrial thinking with transformative implications for the greater manufacturing industry. Presenting ready-to-use, innovative solutions based on scientific evidence, Participation Based Intelligent Manufacturing is this decade's essential guide for navigating, streamlining and revitalising the industrial field.

Sir John Redwood and Sir John Redwood
- Abstract
Sir John Redwood has been at the centre of the movement to speed up the growth in wealth and income around the world through the rediscovery of private enterprise. In the United Kingdom, he has argued and written for privatisation, deregulation, and wider ownership—policies he helped to implement as a government adviser and as Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit. Elsewhere, in countries as diverse as Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, and France, he has advised governments on industrial policies and privatisation and has supervised major share issues. In Popular Capitalism (first published in 1988 and now with a new preface by the author) Redwood draws on his wide-ranging experience to illustrate major economic changes happening around the world. He shows that privatisation, deregulation, venture capital, wider ownership, debt repayment and the growth of new markets are all scenes in a larger drama: the story of how the world is responding to the failure of public sector led growth and to the overburdening of debt that has so damaged countries, companies, and even banks. Popular capitalism is a worldwide phenomenon, embracing Latin America, Gorbachev's reforms, China's own style of local capitalism, and the large government privatisation programmes of the developed world.

- Abstract
How is practical change work carried out in modern organizations? And what kind of challenges, tasks and other difficulties are normally encountered? In a turbulent and changing world, organizational culture is often seen as central for sustained competitiveness. Organizations are faced with increased demands for change but these are often so challenging that they meet heavy resistance and fizzle out. Changing Organizational Culture encourages the development of a reflexive approach to organizational change, providing insights as to why it may be difficult to maintain momentum in change processes. Based around an illuminating case study of a cultural change programme, the book provides 15 lessons on the entire change journey; from analysis and design to implementation and how organizational members should approach change projects. This updated and enhanced third edition considers the most recent studies on organizational change practice, with new examples from businesses and the public sector, and it includes one empirical study which uses the authors'own framework, enriching their practical recommendations. It also draws on the latest theoretical developments, including ideas of power, identity and storytelling. Changing Organizational Culture is vital reading for students, researchers and practitioners working in organizational studies, change management and HRM.

- Abstract
This open-access volume accompanies the microdata release of the EU Loneliness Survey. Loneliness, often referred to as the ‘epidemic of the 21st century', has emerged as a grave public health concern. For years, a lack of comprehensive European cross-national data hindered a thorough examination of this issue. In 2022, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre conducted the inaugural EU Loneliness Survey, covering around 30,000 individuals in 27 European nations. The book sheds light on who is most affected by loneliness, identifies contributing experiences and behaviours, addresses the stigmatisation of loneliness and discusses its societal impact. Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of interventions to combat loneliness. Finally, the book discusses the challenges of survey design and offers valuable insights for the monitoring of loneliness in Europe in the future. This makes the book a must-read for scholars and academics interested in population economics, public health and social well-being.

Common Sense Policy Group, Kate Pickett, Richard Wilkinson, Danny Dorling, Common Sense Policy Group, Kate Pickett, Richard Wilkinson, and Danny Dorling
- Abstract
An inspiring manifesto offering a radical vision for our political future. We live in an age of crisis and decline. The right presents ‘solutions'that only worsen the situation, driving a downward cycle in which desperation leads to despair. But the left is also to blame: progressive politicians have consistently failed to recognise both the urgency of people's need and their receptiveness to new solutions. In Act now, a team of leading researchers presents a compelling and achievable vision for a progressive future. They outline clear policies for welfare, health and social care, education, housing and more. Arguing for a rolling forwards of the state, they call for a new era of active citizenship and economic democracy, grounded in robust and resilient institutions.Only a comprehensive and integrated approach, based on clear evidence of feasibility and popularity, can provide a pathway to the secure, democratic and prosperous Britain of tomorrow. This book is the blueprint. It calls on politicians, pundits and the British people to act now.

- Abstract
'The New Rules of Work'explores the transformative landscape of 21st-century employment, challenging the traditional 9-to-5 office paradigm. This insightful book examines three pivotal trends reshaping our work lives: remote work, alternative schedules like the four-day workweek, and universal basic income. By tracing the evolution of work from the industrial revolution to the digital age, it provides context for understanding why conventional work models are being reimagined. The book argues that embracing these changes can lead to increased productivity, improved employee satisfaction, and more sustainable business practices. It draws on a wealth of research, including case studies of companies successfully implementing new work models and economic analyses of universal basic income experiments. What sets this guide apart is its holistic approach, considering not just technological disruptions but also the human element, exploring how these changes affect personal fulfillment and societal structures. Structured in three parts,'The New Rules of Work'introduces key concepts, explores their implications, and offers practical guidance for individuals and organizations to adapt. It combines academic rigor with real-world applicability, using data-driven analysis and relatable anecdotes to engage readers across various career stages. By addressing controversies and providing strategies for thriving in this new landscape, the book equips readers to navigate the future of work confidently.

34. Information in International Law : An Empirical Study

- Law and economics, International law, Trade regulation, Political science, Law—Philosophy, Law—History, Human rights
- Abstract
Examining state behavior, this book sheds light on the often-overlooked role of information production and diffusion in international law and relations. Most theories of public international law and state behavior rely on a certain degree of international law-related information, such as an international legal ruling, being made public and diffused to reach various key actors such as third states or domestic actors. However, while assumptions about information being produced and diffused permeate international legal scholarly work, these assumptions have not been systematically and empirically evaluated. Based on an empirical analysis, the author challenges prevailing assumptions by systematically evaluating the accessibility and dissemination of crucial international law related information such as treaty negotiation documents or legal rulings. Using a variety of quantitative case studies on key stages of international lawmaking and covering various issue-areas, from human rights to trade law, each chapter traverses three critical levels of analysis, namely whether international law information is public and transparent, whether the information is salient and reaches the general public, and how the information is framed by the media and political elites. The book will appeal to students, researchers, and scholars of law, political science, and economics, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of information production and diffusion in international law and the impact of public opinion on compliance with international law.

- Abstract
Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement (MSE) is both a concept and a management approach, drawing on a combination of theoretical and applied knowledge areas (e.g., impact assessment, business and human rights, and stakeholder theory). MSE has become a key element of corporate sustainability risk-based due diligence as a process that responsible business enterprises are expected to apply to identify and manage harmful impacts on the environment and society.Despite the obvious and growing relevance of meaningful stakeholder engagement, few publications have tried to synthesize the knowledge, academic literature, and practical experience within and around the concept and practices. This volume responds to that knowledge gap through the provision of comprehensive interdisciplinary perspectives. Embodying a rights-holder orientation, The Routledge Handbook on Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement emphasizes the importance of MSE for stakeholders who are or can be affected by activities driven by external actors, such as natural resource extraction or processing; infrastructure; development proposals, planning and implementation; and production for industry or consumption. This handbook offers four thematic sections, all interdisciplinary in character, seeking to explore the multiple aspects of MSE. Moreover, a comprehensive introductory chapter explains key elements of the concept and causes for the current surge in expectations of MSE, including a rise in demands of risk-based due diligence. More than 40 international contributors combine theory and practice in chapters that discuss and elaborate the theory and practice of MSE. Uniquely, each section includes short practice notes based on experiences or dilemmas lived by practitioners or affected people, placing real-life situations into theoretical context. The concluding chapter draws up key insights from the chapters and practice notes, and casts a path for the future of MSE integrating values, norms, and practice.Cutting across multiple disciplines including stakeholder theory, natural resource management, impact assessment, project management, ESG, responsible business, and global value chains, The Routledge Handbook on Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement will be an essential resource for scholars, researchers, developers, investors, affected people, civil society organizations, students, and others. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

- Abstract
Institutional economics is recognised as a peculiarly American development in economics — nothing quite like it emerged in Britain or continental Europe. As such, a knowledge of the literature of institutionalism is a necessary part of understanding the history of American economics and American social thought more broadly. The work of the authors featured in this collection served to create and define the American institutionalist tradition in economics: Thorstein Veblen, Richard Theodore Ely, John Rogers Commons, Robert Franklin Hoxie, Wesley Clair Mitchell and Walton Hale Hamilton. These figures were also central to institutionalism's numerous debates on the unifying characteristics of the movement and its principal contributions — making this collection of their most important works a convenient vehicle to assess these issues. It is also of increasing value given the fact that the main concerns of institutionalists, such as the role of institutions and development of an evolutionary approach, having been coming back into prominence as important issues in economics.

- Author

Hugh T. Miller and Hugh T. Miller
- Abstract
This widely acclaimed work provides a lively counterbalance to the standard assessment-measurement-accountability prescriptions that have made showing you did your job more important than actually doing it. Now extensively revised, it articulates a postmodern theory of public administration that challenges the field to redirect its attention away from narrow, technique-oriented scientism, and toward democratic openness and ethics. The authors incorporate insights from thinkers like Rorty, Giddens, Derrida, and Foucault to recast public administration as an arena of decentered practices. In their framework, ideographic collisions and everyday impasses bring about political events that challenge the status quo, creating possibilities for social change.'Postmodern Public Administration'is an outstanding intellectual achievement that has rewritten the political theory of public administration. This new edition will encourage everyone who reads it to think quite differently about democratic governance.

50. The ISM Method Version 5 : The Road to Customer Value - Driven by Practical Modern IT Service Management
- Author
-
Wim Hoving and Wim Hoving
- Abstract
Customers expect increasingly valuable IT services, services that are flexible, reliable, secure, and efficient. Services that optimally support their users in their work. At the same time, IT organizations are struggling with rapidly changing applications and techniques, increasing compliance requirements, suppliers, and a shortage of employees. ITSM methods such as ITIL, DevOps, XLA, IT4IT, and SIAM are valuable and provide many insights and guidelines and are set up in practice, but due to their complexity and size, they are almost never successfully applied. The road to go is a result-oriented applicable method that is compact and complete, and maximally supports the entire IT organization in creating valuable IT services. A method that is both manageable and executable. ISM Version 5 (Integrated Service Management) uses just seven processes to organize the supply chain from customer to suppliers, and from strategy to operations. It supports the professionals with compact, recognizable, and applicable frameworks and supports the managers with result-oriented and clear control. The holistic design guarantees the coherence in the method across the entire service delivery chain. In ISM Version 5, the most important ITSM developments of recent years such as customer value, experience management, agile, and OBM are integrated into one single solution that is exceptionally applicable due to its compactness, and extremely efficient due to its completeness. With ISM Version 5, every IT organization is offered a clear perspective that can be adopted at its own pace. This book is primarily aimed at all managers and professionals in the IT organization who want insight into the possibilities of result-oriented IT Service Management. In addition to the ISM foundation training, it also forms the basis for the ISM foundation exam. ISM, smart co-creation of customer value.
