This study reported a new low-cost and high-efficient combined method of CaO 2  + free ammonia (FA) pretreatment for sludge anaerobic fermentation. Experimental results showed that the optimal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) yield of 338.6 mg COD/g VSS was achieved when waste activated sludge (WAS) was pretreated with 0.05 g/g VSS of CaO 2  + 180 mg/L of FA for 3 d, which was 2.5-fold of that from CaO 2 pretreatment and 1.5-fold of that from FA pretreatment. The mechanism investigations exhibited that the CaO 2  + FA could provided more biodegradable substrates, this combination accelerated the disintegration of sludge cells, which thereby providing more organics for subsequent SCFA production. It was also found that the combination of CaO 2 and FA inhibited the specific activities of hydrolytic microbes, SCFA producers, and methanogens to some extents, but its inhibition to methanogens was much severer than that to the other two types of microbes. This study reports an innovative strategy known as stepwise pH fermentation, developed to enhance the production of short chain volatile fatty acids (SCFA) from waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation. Experimental results confirmed the optimal pH for WAS disruption and acidification was 11 and 9, respectively, and corresponding optimal time was, respectively, 5 d and 2 d. In this scenario, the optimal SCFA yield was 2356 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L, which was much higher than that derived from alkaline fermentation system. Investigation of the mechanism indicated that pH 11 could accelerate the disruption of WAS and inhibit the activities of methanogens; furthermore, pH 9 was beneficial to the activity of acid-producing bacteria, resulting in more SCFA production. In this work, a mathematical model was developed to describe the dynamics of fermentation products in sludge alkaline fermentation systems for the first time. In this model, the impacts of alkaline fermentation on sludge disintegration, hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis processes are specifically considered for describing the high-level formation of fermentation products. The model proposed successfully reproduced the experimental data obtained from five independent sludge alkaline fermentation studies. The modeling results showed that alkaline fermentation largely facilitated the disintegration, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis processes and severely inhibited methanogenesis process. With the pH increase from 7.0 to 10.0, the disintegration, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis processes respectively increased by 53%, 1030%, and 30% while methane production decreased by 3800%. However, no substantial effect on hydrolysis process was found. The model also indicated that the pathway of acetoclastic methanogenesis was more severely inhibited by alkaline condition than that of hydrogentrophic methanogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reported a new, renewable and high-efficient strategy for anaerobic fermentation, i.e., using free ammonia (FA) to pretreat waste activated sludge (WAS) for 1 d and then combining with rhamnolipid (RL), by which the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production was remarkably improved. Experimental results showed the maximal SCFA production of 324.7 ± 13.9 mg COD/g VSS was achieved at 62.6 mg FA/L pretreatment combined with 0.04 g RL/g TSS, which was respectively 5.95-fold, 1.63-fold and 1.41-fold of that from control, FA pretreatment and RL pretreatment. Mechanism investigations revealed that FA + RL enhanced sludge solubilization and hydrolysis, providing more organics for subsequent SCFA production. It was also found that the combined method inhibited acidogenesis and methanogenesis, but the inhibition to methanogenesis was much severer than that to acidogenesis. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of microalgae is generally constrained by low organics solubilization and poor substrate-availability. In this study, sulfite-based pretreatment was developed to overcome such situation. Experimental results showed that the maximum concentration of VFAs (467.5 mg COD/g VSS) and corresponding acetate proportion (54.5%) was obtained at 200 mg sulfite-S/L with fermentation time of day 8, which was respectively 2.1- and 1.9-fold of control. It was found that after sulfite pretreatment, more and relatively easy biodegradable organics were released into liquid phase, providing available substrate for acid-producing bacteria. The rigid cell wall of microalgae was destroyed, evidenced by the decreased particle size and increased surface area, which made the microalgae more accessible for subsequent hydrolysis and acidification. Meanwhile, the sulfite-induced sulfate-reducing bacteria facilitated the acetate generation pathway. One of the key challenges of wastewater treatment today is to understand the potential effect of residual pollutants on the management of waste activated sludge (WAS). This study aims to clarify the effect of chlortetracycline (CTC) as a residual antibiotic on the anaerobic fermentation of WAS to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The results show that CTC with a concentration of 10 mg/kg total suspended solids enhances the VFA production by 21.1%. Mechanistically, CTC was found to prompt the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances to provide more substrates for anaerobic fermentation. Meanwhile, CTC stimulates acidification by increasing the activity of acetate kinase, and inhibits methanogenesis by reducing F 420 activity, thereby increasing the accumulation of VFAs. Thiosulfinate, a nature antibiotic, existed in all parts of Allium thereby accumulating in kitchen waste vastly. However, few literatures were available related to its influence on volatile fatty acids (VFA) and hydrogen production when kitchen waste digestion technology was applied. This study aimed to explore the inhibitory effect and the relevant mechanism. Experimental results showed that the hydrogen accumulation decreased from 23.2 ± 0.8 to 8.2 ± 0.1 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solid) and maximal total VFA yield decreased from 765.7 ± 21.2 to 376.4 ± 21.7 mg COD (chemical oxygen demand)/g VSS when the dosage of thiosulfinate increased from 0 to 12.5 µg/g VSS. The mechanism study indicated, compared with control group, that the butyric acid decreased from 59% to 20.1% of total VFA yield when reactor in present of 12.5 µg/g VSS thiosulfinate. • Clarithromycin promoted volatile fatty acids production from sludge fermentation. • Clarithromycin was partly degraded during the anaerobic fermentation process. • Clarithromycin enhanced sludge solubilization process. • Clarithromycin inhibited all the other process of anaerobic fermentation. This study investigated the effect of Clarithromycin (CLA) on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production during waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation for the first time. Experimental results showed that when CLA concentration in WAS increased from 0 to 1000 mg/kg TSS, the maximum yield of VFAs increased from 27.7 to 35.7 mg COD/g VSS (without pH pretreatment) and from 59.3 to 65.6 mg COD/g VSS (initial pH 9 pretreatment), respectively. Mechanism exploration revealed that CLA facilitated the disruption of extracellular polymeric substances, thus promoting WAS solubilization. CLA inhibited all the other anaerobic fermentation processes. However, its inhibition to acetogenesis and methanogenesis was severer than that to hydrolysis and acidogenesis, resulting in the decrease in VFAs consumption. Microbial analysis showed that CLA slightly increased the abundance of microorganisms responsible for hydrolysis and acidogenesis whereas decreased the proportion of VFAs-consuming microorganisms.
