Lignin, a principal biomass component, is a promising resource for manufacturing value-added products, tackling environmental concerns, and fostering sustainable energy alternatives. However, its intricate structure and recondensation reactions pose substantial conversion challenges. This study introduces an innovative one-pot catalytic technique for lignin's direct conversion into liquid hydrocarbons over a Ru/C catalyst. The method integrates lignin depolymerization and the hydrogenolysis of resultant phenolics, achieving an 84.3 % carbon yield mainly constituting benzene, toluene, xylene, and cycloalkanes. The solvent-free concept in this system is proposed and tested, it streamlines downstream separation and boosts energy efficiency. These findings highlight the viability of repurposing waste lignin into liquid hydrocarbons and high-value chemicals, thereby supporting sustainable biomass utilization advancements.
