Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are playing a pivotal role in the power sector with potential applications, such as interfacing renewable energy sources with the grid and several industrial drive applications. MLIs with a smaller number of switching devices are more promising due to their compact size, reduced cost, and higher efficiency compared with their traditional counterparts. This paper, therefore, presents a new three-phase seven-level inverter. This topology is a combination of two cascade-connected two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and H-bridge cells with flying capacitors (FCs). This paper presents the operating principle and the balancing technique for the dc-link capacitors and FCs. The generation of various output voltage levels and the limitation of the sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation control for FC voltage balancing is also presented. The number of components in the proposed circuit configuration and their voltage ratings are considerably lower compared with the recently proposed topologies. The behavior of the proposed circuit configuration is first assessed with simulation studies and is then tested with a laboratory prototype. The huge untapped energy from ocean waves is one of the ideal solutions for world energy crisis. This paper proposes a linear-generator-based direct power conversion plant model to generate the electrical energy from ocean waves. The linear generator output is of variable magnitude and variable frequency in nature. In this paper, this variable output is converted to fixed dc voltage by using a diode bridge rectifier and a dc-link capacitor. The linear generator along with a diode bridge and a capacitor forms a wave power unit. These wave power units can be connected in series and parallel to meet the power ratings. A reliable multilevel inverter is fed from the wave power units to ensure uninterrupted tapping of power from this abundant renewable energy source. The reliable inverter operation is analyzed under open- and short-circuit faults in switches by reconfiguring the carrier waves of sine pulsewidth modulation during fault conditions. A fault detection algorithm using a single sensor at the output is also proposed to detect the faults in the switches of the proposed reliable inverter. The proposed plant model with a linear generator and a reliable inverter is simulated using ANSYS MAXWELL and MATLAB/Simulink. The plant model is tested using a programmable ac source for emulating the linear generator and the developed prototype of the diode bridge rectifier and the reliable multilevel inverter. In this paper, the characteristics of ripple current of a multimegawatt drive system fed by a pulse-width modulation (PWM) inverter are investigated. Based on the investigation, a novel PWM scheme is devised to reduce the switching loss of the inverter under an identical amount of torque ripple of a motor. The proposed PWM is composed of two parts. The first is minimum torque ripple PWM (MTRPWM), which is optimized in terms of the minimum torque ripple in high modulation index (MI). The second determines the minimum switching frequency while holding the average torque ripple less than the allowable value under various operating conditions. It is termed reduced switching frequency PWM (RSFPWM). Consequently, by simply changing the PWM method from conventional fixed switching frequency continuous PWM to the proposed PWM, MTRPWM and RSFPWM, simulation results show that the switching loss of the inverter driving a 3.5 MW induction motor is reduced to 51.6% while keeping the torque ripple in the allowable boundary, where MI is 1.12. This approach is applied to small-scale experimental sets consisting of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) motor-generator set, and an induction machine MG set in an effort to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. Based on these experimental results, the cost indexes of the IPMSM and the induction machine, as defined in this paper, decrease by up to 66% and 77%, respectively, when the proposed method is applied when MI is 1.12 compared with the outcome with the conventional PWM. Neutral-point-clamped (NPC) multilevel inverter fed high power drives operating at low switching frequency are prone to low-order torque pulsations. For a case of N switching angles per quarter, apart from maintaining the fundamental component, (N-1) voltage harmonics can be eliminated. Consequently, \fracN-12 or lower number of torque harmonics could be eliminated. This paper proposes an optimal pulse-width modulation (PWM), which minimizes the combined root mean square (RMS) value (\tau RMS ) of torque harmonics of order lower than $6N$ at any modulation index (M$) for an induction motor drive fed from an NPC three-level inverter. This paper considers cases of two, three, and four switching angles per quarter cycle of the pole voltage. Compared with synchronized sine-triangle PWM and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) PWM, the proposed PWM reduces the first (N-1$ ) torque harmonics (i.e., \tau _6 ) over a wide speed range. This paper presents a simplified implementation technique for direct torque control (DTC) of asymmetric six-phase induction motor drive. Current harmonics of fifth and seventh order are observed in the phase currents if conventional DTC scheme is extended for the asymmetric six-phase machine. These harmonic components are not responsible for torque production, thus causing losses in the motor winding. Synthetic vectors are generally used for reduction of current harmonics. Average voltage in $xy$ subspace is maintained to zero by synthetic vectors leading to reduction of currents in $xy$ subspace. A simplified method of implementation of synthetic vectors is proposed in this paper, which eliminates the need for designing of switching sequence and requirement of field-programmable gate array. Also, the number of synthetic vectors that can be possibly produced is increased compared with the ones developed by techniques available in the literature. Finite state model predictive control (MPC) has been recently applied to several converter topologies, as it can provide many advantages over other MPC techniques. The advantages of MPC include fast dynamics, multitarget control capability, and relatively easy implementation on digital control platforms. However, its inherent variable switching frequency and lower steady-state waveform quality with respect to standard control, which includes an appropriate modulation technique, represent a limitation to its applicability. Modulated model predictive control (M2 PC) combines all the advantages of MPC with the fixed switching frequency characteristic of pulse-width modulation algorithms. The work presented in this paper focuses on the indirect matrix converter (IMC), where the tight coupling between rectifier stage and inverter stage has to be taken into account in the M2PC design. This paper proposes an M2PC solution, suitable for IMC, with a switching pattern that emulates the desired waveform quality features of space vector modulation for matrix converters. The switching sequences of the rectifier stage and inverter stage are rearranged in order to always achieve zero-current switching on the rectifier stage, thus simplifying the current commutation strategy. In this paper, it is described how the circulating current flows between inverters that have isolated dc link such as cascaded H-bridge (CHB) topology when they are operating in parallel. In this case, zero sequence circulating current, which normally flows through shared dc link, cannot flow between inverters in parallel. However, circulating current is provoked by asynchronous switching instant of devices, difference of dc-link voltages of parallel inverters, and unbalanced impedance. The circulating current should be suppressed by a sharing inductor that is inserted between inverters. Generally, all of the inverters should synthesize the same output voltage reference for load current control to minimize the size of this sharing reactor. However, this conventional method cannot guarantee diminishing circulating current in the transient state and even in the steady state. In this paper, in order to reduce sharing reactance, after deriving circulating current model from general case of n-parallel operation, circulating current control method is devised based on the model. This proposed algorithm is applied to active front end five-level-CHB inverter system for medium voltage drive. This paper proposes a new inverter topology based on the active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter with capability to integrate one energy storage system (ESS) per inverter leg with an independent state of charge control, so that each inverter leg has two dc ports and one ac port. The primary dc port is common to all inverter legs and it is connected to the main power source. The secondary dc port is suitable for ESS connection because of its two-quadrant operation, with bidirectional current capability, so that the ESS can be charged and discharged with regulated current. Integration of a secondary dc port with independent control also allows the use of different ESS technologies for each inverter leg to compose a hybrid ESS. Redundant switching states of the proposed structure are used to balance the energy exchanged between the secondary dc port and the dc bus capacitors. Theoretical propositions were experimentally validated through a 1-kW single-phase inverter with a secondary dc port connected to a 230-V ESS and ac port connected to an LC filter feeding a linear load. Transformerless inverters are getting popular in distributed photovoltaic power generation (PVPG) system due to its light weight, low cost, and higher efficiency in power conversion. However, the production of leakage current leads to severe electromagnetic interference and operational insecurity, which declines the reliability and efficiency of the overall system. Besides that many of the topologies have been addressed with real power injection capabilities in the literature. Therefore, in this paper, an improved hybrid-bridge (IH-B) inverter for transformerless PVPG system is proposed with 1) reduced leakage current by abolishing the fluctuations in common-mode voltage (CMV) due to switch junction capacitances and 2) reactive power capability with a modified sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation technique. This topology is constructed with the combination of bidirectional clamping branch and hybrid-bridge (H-B) inverter topology to maintain CMV at half of the dc-link voltage and ensure better quality of output waveforms at different power factors of the grid. Further, MATLAB simulation results of the IH-B and H-B topologies are presented and compared to prove the potential benefits of the proposed topology. Unipolar-pulsewidth modulation (UP-PWM) inverter takes advantages of high power efficiency and small output chokes which is widely used in the industry. However, UP-PWM inverters cannot be used in parallel operation due to a current unbalance problem. This paper studies the current unbalance problem of paralleled UP-PWM inverters with common dc bus and ac bus. First, the problem of unbalanced inductor current is defined and analyzed. Second, a technique to eliminate unbalanced currents is proposed. The proposed current balancing technique only requires one more current sensor in an inverter module rather than changing converter topology or modulation method, which makes it possible to apply UP-PWM inverters in parallel-operation while keeping the advantages of unipolar switching. The proposed current balancing method is verified by both simulation and hardware experiment. The integration of switched-capacitor techniques into multilevel inverters (MLIs) with a dc source string contributes to the boosting of voltage gain, renders it particularly attractive in reducing the number of input dc sources in the series string. However, the recent two-stage MLI topologies suffer from high voltage stress across the backend H-bridge. Addressing this concern, an improved topology, namely the one-switched-capacitor integrated MLI (1SCI-MLI) is proposed in this paper. An extended topology of 1SC-MLI is also established by appropriate incorporation of another switched-capacitor circuit. The two proposed topologies are endowed with voltage boosting capability. They also feature low switch count and low number of dc sources. More importantly, they resolve the high voltage stress problem in the existing counterparts. Their corresponding operational analysis and comparisons with recent MLI topologies are discussed. This paper proposes a new grid current controller for a photovoltaic (PV) module integrated buck inverter using a single pulsewidth modulation switch and an unfolding H-bridge, which significantly reduces switching losses. To achieve this, an internal grid current loop with active damping is presented with an LCL filter to connect it to the utility grid. The problem of the filter natural resonance is solved by means of a virtual impedance (active damping), demanding no additional sensor. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. Electrically excited synchronous machines have shown potential to be an alternative to permanent magnet synchronous machines in electromobility and wind power applications. High-frequency wireless power transferring technology enables a compact design of brushless exciters for the machine. In this paper, a dynamic model of high-frequency brushless exciters is proposed for the purposes of operating condition monitoring and excitation control. The modeling is done by using arithmetic and differential equations as well as considering different operation modes of the system. The operation modes are defined based on the physical behaviors of the excitation circuit. Experiments are performed to verify the model with variations of different circuit parameters. Furthermore, parameter sensitivity study, component parameter selection, and loss analysis are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. One of the recent trends in power electronics field is to achieve high efficiency and compact size by using wide bandgap power devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) or gallium nitride switches. This paper compares the efficiency, the motor terminal voltage quality (dv/dt), and the common mode current of the SiC-based variable frequency drives (VFDs) according to the inverter topologies with and without the output filters. For this purpose, both the 2-level (2L) and 3-level (3L) topologies with SiC devices are built and tested. Here, the well-known 2L half-bridge inverter is compared with the well-known 3L T-type neutral point clamped inverter. A dv/dt filter and a sine wave filter have been discussed to satisfy the National Electrical Manufacturers Association standards as well. The experiments have been carried out with a 380-V/60-Hz, 3.7-kW induction motor and the custom designed power stages. In this paper, the zero sequence circulating current in open winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (OW-PMSM) drives with common dc bus is systematically analyzed for the first time. It is revealed that the zero sequence circulating current is affected by zero sequence back-electromotive force, cross coupling voltages in zero sequence from the machine side, pulse-width modulation induced zero sequence voltage, and inverter nonlinearity from the inverter side. Particularly, the influences from the cross coupling voltages in zero sequence and parasitic effect of inverter nonlinearity are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then, the synthetic model of the equivalent zero sequence circuit is proposed as well. Each cause is studied independently via analytical modeling, finite element analysis, and experiments. Meanwhile, to tackle this issue, the relevant suppression strategy using frequency adaptive proportional resonant controller is presented and tested on the 3 kW OW-PMSM platform. Three-phase voltage-source inverters typically feature a significant amount of dc energy storage to maintain a stiff dc bus. In these cases, the dc-link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. In this paper, we propose to reduce the size of the dc-link capacitor dramatically to store enough energy to provide just one high-frequency switching cycle of the ac output power. The dc bus is no longer stiff, and hence, classical sinusoidal pulse-width modulation cannot be used. However, the stored energy modulation (SEM) proposed herein synthesizes high-quality sinusoidal output voltage waveforms, even with such tiny dc-link capacitors. In SEM, the switching intervals of the interconnecting switches are carefully determined nonlinear functions of various operating parameters such as reactive component sizing, switching frequency, load levels, etc. This paper presents the analytical and detailed design development of the SEM approach along with circuit simulation, experimental results, and comparative evaluation of a dc-to-three-phase system example. One of the main challenges of the solid-state transformer (SST) lies in the implementation of the dc–dc stage. In this paper, a quadruple-active-bridge (QAB) dc–dc converter is investigated to be used as a basic module of a modular three-stage SST. Besides the feature of high power density and soft-switching operation (also found in others converters), the QAB converter provides a solution with reduced number of high-frequency transformers, since more bridges are connected to the same multiwinding transformer. To ensure soft switching for the entire operation range of the QAB converter, the triangular current-mode modulation strategy, previously adopted for the dual-active-bridge converter, is extended to the QAB converter. The theoretical analysis is developed considering balanced (equal power processed by the medium-voltage (MV) cells) and unbalanced (unequal power processed by the MV cells) conditions. Paralleled inverters have the merits of high power rating, improved reliability, and convenient maintenance. However, zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) will occur and lead to current distortion and system loss. The ZSCC control is more complicated when three-level topology is utilized and paralleled number is increased. Therefore, this paper proposes a simplified ZSCC suppression scheme for multi-paralleled three-level T-type inverters (3LT2Is). A novel equivalent model is developed and the ZSCC controller based on the new model is easier to implement. Thus, the number of paralleled inverters can be increased without complicating the control scheme and the inverters could be switched on or off optionally. Besides, Feed-Forward (FF) strategy is adopted to eliminate the ZSCC spikes caused by symmetrical three-level space vector modulation. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The main advantage of this strategy is the reduction in size of the required ac inductor by a factor of 4, as well as the reduction of power losses in the switching devices. The theoretical analysis clearly shows that the compensator can synthesize a sinusoidal output current by controlling only instantaneous reactive power, thus eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. A 5-kW experimental setup validates the operating principle and the control method of the proposed inverter and exhibits an inverter efficiency as high as 99.2% with Si superjunction mosfets. Three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are being widely adopted in low-voltage low-power applications. For an intended application, the modulation strategy and the operating conditions are the two key factors that highly influence the major performance indices of the NPC inverter, such as efficiency, harmonic distortion, and voltage oscillations at neutral point (NP). Considering dynamic loading applications where the operating point varies significantly, this paper proposes an improved adjustable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy for a three-level NPC inverter that can alter its modulation pattern to meet desired performance objectives for the full operation range. It has been shown that by varying two control parameters namely discontinuity control parameter and bias control parameter, the proposed modulation strategy changes its pattern between the most efficient generalized discontinuous PWM to NP oscillations-free partial dipolar PWM strategy. Additionally, to obtain a tradeoff between the performance parameters—efficiency, NP oscillations, and waveform quality—The proposed strategy has the ability to settle at the intermediate modulation patterns by transforming into a hybrid modulation signal. Furthermore, considering NP voltage unbalance mitigation as major technical challenge in adjustable modulation strategy, a voltage unbalance compensator that exhibits satisfactory balancing performance for the entire variations of modulation patterns and operating conditions has also been presented. The performance of the proposed modulation strategy in conjunction with voltage unbalance compensator has been evaluated in simulation by widely varying the speed and load of induction motor, and verified in experimentation. This paper presents design of an isolated high-step-down dc–dc converter based on a class-DE power stage, operating at a 10-MHz switching frequency using enhancement-mode gallium nitride transistors. The converter operating principles are discussed, and the power stage design rated for 20 W is presented for a step down from 200–300 V input to 0–28 V output. Commercially available magnetic materials were explored and the high-frequency resonant inductor and transformer designs using a low-loss Fair-Rite type 67 material are presented. Finite-element simulations have been performed to estimate the parameters of magnetics at 10-MHz. Experimental results are presented at 12 W, 254 V input to 22 V output and 5 W, 254 V input to 14 V output on a laboratory prototype operating at 10-MHz. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. In this paper, a new zero-sequence current suppression control strategy for the five-phase open-winding fault-tolerant fractional-slot concentrated-winding interior-permanent-magnet (FTFSCW-IPM) motor drive system with a common dc bus is proposed. By unequal distribution of the zero voltage vector, the proposed method can well suppress the zero-sequence current caused by the dead-time effect that the conventional eliminating method cannot be achieved. First, the dead-time effect to the zero-sequence current is discussed. Then the zero-axis controller is designed to obtain the reference common-mode voltage. Last, according to the principle of the unequal zero voltage vector distribution, the switching sequence of the two inverters can be calculated, and the maximum modulation index is also first deduced in detail. A discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (DPWM) strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter drive for electric vehicles (EVs) with minimum switching loss for the full power factor (PF) range is developed and presented in this paper. Considering the dynamic loading conditions in an EV propelled by an induction motor (IM), the discontinuous modulation strategy is generalized to obtain minimum switching loss for a wide variations in load PF and modulation depth. The dynamic operating conditions in EV may render frequent unbalances in dc-link capacitor voltages in NPC inverter. It is demonstrated that the addition of an appropriate offset signal with the reference discontinuous signals generates compensating neutral current in the right direction, which can be used to mitigate existing unbalance in two dc-link capacitor voltages. Minimum switching loss at variable PF is attained by positioning the nonswitching clamped regions of the reference auxiliary signals according to the load PF. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for a wide range of torque/speed variations is studied through simulation by developing a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of an IM traction inverter drive with field-oriented control strategy for closed loop control. In this paper, a multipulse ac–dc converter fed multilevel inverter (MLI)-based indirect vector controlled induction motor drive (IVCIMD) is proposed for medium-power application. A 54-pulse ac–dc converter is utilized at the supply side to suppress the input current total harmonic distortion, as per the IEEE-519 standard. Mainly three separate isolated transformers are utilized and each transformer is configured as an 18-pulse ac–dc converter. Due to the phase shift in primary windings, these three transformers are reconfigured as a 54-pulse ac–dc converter. A 15-level binary-based cascaded MLI is utilized at the motor side to enhance the required performance of IVCIMD. A 15-level inverter is switched at fundamental frequency, which ensures the very low switching losses in the proposed IVCIMD. A modified nearest level modulation strategy is proposed to achieve fundamental switching frequency. The performance of the proposed IVCIMD is simulated at various operating conditions by utilizing Simulink/MATLAB platform. This paper presents a new least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm based deadtime compensation method to suppress the current distortion in permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) field-oriented control (FOC) drives. Compared to conventional average value compensations, the proposed method is robust to switching device parameter variations thanks to the online adaptation capability of the LMS algorithm. Similarly, the disturbance observer compensators are also immune to switching device parameter variations; however, varying motor parameters degrade their compensation performance. Without prior knowledge of switching device or motor parameters, the proposed method can directly reduce the deadtime current harmonics by generating compensation voltage references. In addition, the proposed method is easy to implement since it does not require voltage errors estimation or current harmonics extraction, which are necessary for disturbance observer and adaptive filter based methods. An adaptive control of DPWM implementable in clamped-three-level inverters with two strings of photovoltaic (PV) panels in cascaded connection is proposed in this paper. The proposed modulation is developed based on the so-called circuit-level decoupling concept. It is able to provide balance line voltage even under unbalanced dc links. The unequal dc voltages appeared due to asymmetric maximum point of power trackings (MPPTs) are controlled by proper injection of zero-sequence voltage to the common mode voltage, while the total dc voltage is regulated based on the voltage commands generated by the MPPT of each string. Thus, both PV strings are able to be operated based on their MPPTs while there is almost no low-order harmonic distortion at the inverter output current. This paper presents an improved analytical model for estimating the high-frequency current ripple of interior permanent magnet synchronous machines due to pulsewidth modulation (PWM) switching. The proposed model accounts for the impact of slotting effect, magnetic saturation, and cross-coupling between the $d$ - and $q$ -axis. The model is subsequently used to investigate several factors that influence the PWM-induced current ripple. These include the PWM switching frequency, fundamental frequency (i.e., machine speed), dc-bus voltage, current control angle (i.e., γ angle), and the excitation current amplitude (i.e., saturation level). Experiments have been conducted to verify the analytical prediction results. These results show that the analytical model can predict the PWM-induced current ripple waveshape very well for many operating conditions and accurately estimate its rms value over a complete fundamental period. Inverter dead-time is known to make open-loop induction motor drives oscillatory, while operating at light-loads in particular. While dead-time compensation schemes exist, precise compensation of the same is often challenging as it involves factors such as device and driver delays and switching transition times, which are difficult to be quantified accurately. Hence, the effect of dead-time could be under or overcompensated. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of such undercompensation and overcompensation on the stability of a 100-kW induction motor drive, along with experimental investigations of the same. The effects of undercompensation and overcompensation on the inverter output voltage are analyzed on a switching-cycle average basis. Further, small-signal models are proposed for an open-loop drive, when it is undercompensated and overcompensated. Stability analysis of the above motor drive is reported, which predicts oscillatory behavior with both under and overcompensation, over certain fundamental frequency ranges, respectively. Further, two different types of oscillatory behavior, characterized by different oscillating frequencies, are observed for the cases of under and overcompensation. This paper presents a step in microlevel photovoltaic (PV) summation technology for combining unsymmetrical PV modules with differences in specification and age, relocation on nonfertile land, or multilocation mounting by designing an add-on modular hardware interface to a multi-input single-output (MISO) dc bus, using an MISO controller employing a suitable maximum power point (MPP) tracker under partial shading/long distance/mismatching PV module conditions along with a sensor-less PV vector control inverter (PV–VCI) driving a three-phase asynchronous squirrel cage induction motor dedicated to irrigation, with the facility of autoconfiguration/autotuning at the beginning. A PV source gets automatically added/removed in a ramp profile in proportion to the load in steps, thus keeping on only when required, enabling high efficiency, minimum heating, and prolonged life as that of a PV module. The contribution includes a reduced PV energy cost per watt by 24.10%, improved return on investment by 27.48%, improved water discharge yield by 11.06%, and improved MPP tracker impact by 14.59% with 90.88% MISO system efficiency compared to a normal scheme. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. Two multilevel conventional inverters with the same number of semiconductor switches are used for comparison. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the studied converter. This paper presents a nine-level transformer-based inverter requiring only eight switches. The envisaged structure consists of two standard H-bridges fed from a single dc source. Besides, a single-phase transformer is employed to aid the process of intermediate voltage level generation. An ad-hoc pulsewidth modulation scheme based on boolean logic form equations is developed to derive the gating pulses. An effortless extension of the proposed inverter to a higher number of voltage levels is also achieved by generalizing the switching functions. Furthermore, the superior performance of the proposed topology is demonstrated through a comprehensive cost-based analysis. The requirements for peripheral circuits of power converters are becoming more restrictive due to the enhancement of Si-based power devices and due to practical use of SiC device. In the design of modern high-speed switching converters, the stray inductances and capacitances both in the device package and in the gate drive circuit in addition to those in the main circuit of the power converter must be considered. In these situations, the gate driving technique represents the key technology for enhancement of high-speed switching ability of power devices, as there are design limitations to reduce the stray inductances and capacitances. So far, several active gate control methods have been proposed. Most conventional active gate drivers are configured using analog circuits such as transistors and diodes. Thus, it is difficult to reconfigure their control parameters to fit the stray inductances and capacitances after the implementation of power converter and gate circuits. As a solution to these problems, the authors have proposed a programmable gate driver IC, which is a digitally controlled circuit. This gate driver IC can control the gate current at 63 separate levels, operated by programmable fully digital 12-bit and clock signals. In this paper, an active gate current control based on the load current in a half-bridge inverter with two programmable gate driver ICs is demonstrated. This developed gate control is different to the general current feedback control followed the reference value. It is verified that the proposed active gate control can effectively improve the tradeoff relationship between the surge voltage and switching loss of the pulsewidth modulation half-bridge inverter circuit. An optimal current control strategy for asymmetrical hybrid multilevel inverters (MLIs) is proposed in this paper enabling their use on motor drives, static synchronous compensators, and photovoltaic and wind generators, where a fast and precise current regulation is required. A key feature of these highly efficient converters is that an ac machine (motor or transformer) operates according to an open-end winding configuration, connected on one side to a main MLI and, on the other side, to an auxiliary two-level inverter (TLI). The first efficiently controls the main power stream operating at a low switching frequency, while the TLI acts as an active power filter, exploiting a conventional high-frequency two-level pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique. The proposed control scheme optimally exploits the key features of the two inverters by suitably sharing the control task. In fact, a predictive current control is assigned to the MLI, which can be accomplished by low switching frequency operations, while the high switching frequency of the PWM-operated TLI is exploited to accomplish a fast and precise closed-loop current control, processing only a part of the power stream flowing through the system, thus producing low power losses. This paper proposes new angles constraint for selective harmonic elimination-pulsewidth modulation (SHE)-PWM utilized in single-phase inverter applications. The proposed angles constraint naturally eliminates all triplen harmonics, whereas they conventionally appeared in all single-phase output voltages. The harmonic amplitude formula is developed based on the obtained angles constraint, and then modified single-phase SHE equations are defined to eliminate only specified low nontriplen harmonics. Therefore, more harmonics would be eliminated with the same switching frequency in modified SHE-PWM. Five-level voltage waveform has been opted to implement the introduced method, but it can be applied on all multilevel voltage waveforms such as seven-level with even number of angles. Unlike the conventional SHE technique, THD is analyzable in modified SHE to find optimum values for switching angles in order to control noneliminated harmonic amplitudes and minimize THD. Moreover, the cancellation of triplen harmonics empowers a single-phase inverter to supply nonlinear loads beside linear ones. Some experimental tests are accomplished using a single-phase five-level modified packed U-cell (MPUC) inverter. Results are discussed to prove the excellent performance of a single-phase MPUC inverter under both normal and harmonic loads and accurate elimination of determined triplen and nontriplen harmonics by applying the presented angles constraint. This paper illustrates the application of a solving method of linear systems to a multilevel inverter. This study applies a generic pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method to a multilevel topology. This method finally highlights some specific modulation schemes. First, the study describes the mathematical model of the inverter leg. The leg is made of three level T-type structure. The model is extended to the three-phase inverter. The generalized inverse is used to generate the solution set of the conduction rates. Among the modulation strategies possible, three specific modulation schemes are proposed. The modulation schemes are applied to simulate a PWM three-phase inverter. In order to prevent the power switching devices (e.g., an insulated-gate bipolar transistor, IGBT) from shoot-through in voltage-source converters during a switching period, the dead time is added either in the hardware driver circuits of the IGBTs or implemented in software in pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes. Both solutions will contribute to a degradation of the injected current quality. As a consequence, the harmonics induced by the dead time (referred to as “dead-time harmonics” hereafter) have to be compensated in order to achieve a satisfactory current quality, as required by standards. In this paper, the emission mechanism of dead-time harmonics in single-phase PWM inverters is, thus, presented considering the modulation schemes in detail. More importantly, a repetitive controller has been adopted to eliminate the dead-time effect in single-phase grid-connected PWM converters. The repetitive controller has been plugged into a proportional-resonant-based fundamental-frequency current controller so as to mitigate the dead-time harmonics and also to maintain the control of the fundamental-frequency grid current in terms of dynamics. Simulations and experiments are provided, which confirm that the repetitive controller can effectively compensate the dead-time harmonics and other low-order distortions, and also, it is a simple method without hardware modifications. This paper presents a hybrid pulse width modulation-based discontinuous modulation (D-HPWM) strategy with dc-link voltage balancing for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter drive. The results are then compared with continuous-hybrid-PWM (C-HPWM) to check the performance improvement. The HPWM strategy uses both the advantages of carrier- and space-vector-based PWM strategies. The duty cycles are generated using the carrier-based strategy to reduce the computational time and complexity of the system and redundant vector states are used to keep the two dc-link capacitor voltages balanced. As discontinuous PWM (DPWM) reduces the switching losses considerably compared to the continuous PWM, the DPWM strategy is developed in this paper for the HPWM-based strategy. Detailed comparison studies are then carried out in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS to show the conduction and switching loss distribution with change in modulation index for different power switches. A 54.0-kW surface permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is used for this simulation studies. Moreover, the total inverter loss and losses in each insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) are also compared. Detailed experimental performance analysis is also carried out with a scaled down prototype of a 6.0-kW surface PMSM, NPC inverter, and real-time emulator DSpace, to show the capacitor voltage deviation with both control strategies. This paper presents an improved dc-link voltage balancing algorithm for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter by considering phase current direction. Detailed studies on the effects of change in load current direction on the dc-link capacitor voltages are presented. A maximum value of power factor is numerically derived, above which it affects the capacitor voltage balancing capability. Compared with the previously presented research work, the inputs to the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation block are the three phase currents and the difference between the two capacitor voltages. Depending on the states of the two dc-link capacitor voltages and phase current direction, redundant voltage vector sequences are selected. The selected vectors keep the capacitor voltage deviations within 5% of the total dc-link voltage. Two zero switching vectors (i.e., PPP and NNN) are also removed from all subsectors of the earlier proposed strategy, which one used to produce higher common-mode voltages. Detailed simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper for a 6.0-kW surface permanent-magnet synchronous machine. This paper is concerned with the use of a three-level inverter for a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM). The SynRM suffers from a poor power factor due to poor machine saliency. This makes it harder to operate the three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter due to a strict requirement to have the two dc-link capacitor voltages balanced. This paper proposes a new nearest three vector modulation algorithm which can balance the two dc-link capacitors even at poor machine saliency ratio (poor power factor). In this paper, a method of sizing the two dc-link capacitors based on the machine power is also proposed. A comparison between two- and three-level inverters was conducted. The growing interest in clean and sustainable electric energy pushes toward increasing the interconnection of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) to utility grids. The designs of the majority of WECSs employ power electronic converters (PECs), which generally have nonlinear and switched characteristics. The characteristics, operation, and control of PECs in WECSs can result in nonconventional voltage–current behaviors during faults. This paper investigates the voltage–current behaviors during faults that occur in grid-connected WECSs. Two types of WECSs are considered in this paper, which are the doubly fed induction generators and permanent magnet generator based WECSs. This paper proposes a novel bidirectional inverter, named series ac-link inverter. This three-phase inverter belongs to a new class of partial resonant ac-link converters in which the link is formed by a series ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. The input and output of this converter can be either dc, ac, single-phase, or multiphase. Therefore, they can appear as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac configurations. In all of these configurations, the ac capacitor is the main energy-storage element, and the inductor is merely added to facilitate the zero-current turnoff of the switches and their soft turn-on. Due to the zero-current turnoff of the switches in the proposed converter, the use of SCRs with natural commutation is possible as well. Since the current and voltage of the link are both alternating, no bulky dc-electrolytic capacitors are required in this converter. This paper mainly focuses on bidirectional dc to three-phase ac conversion. This single-stage inverter can step up or step down the voltage in a wide range. If galvanic isolation is required a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. In the proposed inverter, the power can flow in both directions, and therefore, it is an excellent candidate for battery-utility interface and electric vehicle applications. This paper proposes a new circuit configuration and a control scheme for a single-phase current-source inverter with a power decoupling circuit which is called as the active buffer. The proposed inverter achieves a low-dc-input voltage ripple and also provides a sinusoidal current that can achieve unity power factor, without large passive components in the dc bus such as smoothing inductors and electrolytic capacitors. These components are conventionally required in order to decouple the power pulsation caused by the single-phase power source. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed inverter are demonstrated experimentally. From the experimental results, the input voltage ripple is 8.87%, and the output current total harmonic distortion is 4.24%. In addition, an output power factor of 99% and a maximum efficiency of 94.9% are obtained. Finally, it is confirmed that the maximum power densities of the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit are 2.75 kW/L at the switching frequency of 70 kHz and 4.86 kW/L at the switching frequency of 80 kHz, respectively. This paper proposes a vector control strategy for independent control of two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using a single four-leg inverter (4LI). An expanded two-arm modulation to obtain a balanced three-phase output voltage is described. This paper also proposes a method to compensate for the fluctuations in the neutral point voltage of two split capacitors in the dc link. This paper presents the voltage- and current-limited operation of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) using deadbeat direct torque and flux control (DB-DTFC). A commanded air-gap torque and stator flux can be achieved by the end of each pulsewidth modulation (PWM) period using DB-DTFC. However, it may take several PWM periods to achieve a desired air-gap torque that is physically infeasible in one step due to voltage limits. In that case, the torque and flux command trajectories operating over multiple periods can be developed to achieve deadbeat torque and flux response for every PWM period. The torque and flux command trajectories can be developed in different shapes depending on desired objectives. In this paper, a minimum-time ramp trajectory method is proposed to achieve both simple real-time implementation and fast and stable transient dynamics of IPMSM drives. In this paper, a new T-type inverter topology based on multistate switching cell is proposed. The topology presents five-level voltage before the output $LC$ filter, providing high-order harmonics that are easily filtered. In this topology, the output filter ripple frequency is twice the switching frequency, therefore reducing the magnetic weight and volume. Other characteristics of the inverter are current sharing through the devices, facilitating its losses' dissipation, due to increased contact area and few involved components in the current flow path. This paper presents the direct compensation of the switching interval error of the effective voltage vectors by the dead time of a pulsewidth modulation voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI). The output voltages of a three-phase PWM-VSI are distorted and have voltage errors from the dead time to avoid the shoot-through of inverter arms and the time delay of the gate drive. Voltage distortion increases the harmonics of the output voltages and decreases control performance. This paper presents a simple and direct compensation technique to solve this problem in a three-phase VSI. The practical switching output voltages are determined by the dc-link voltage, the switching signals of each phase, the dead time, the time delay, and the current polarities of each phase. For these reasons, output voltage errors are not constant. In order to analyze the dead-time effect in the actual switching voltages of each phase, the practical switching voltages in a sampling period of a space vector PWM (SVPWM) method are calculated according to the current polarity. In the calculation, the dead time, the time delay of devices, and the voltage drops on power devices are included to consider nonlinear voltage distortion. From these practical switching voltages during the switching intervals in a sampling period, the average output voltages of each phase can be derived, and the output voltage errors between the voltage commands and the average output voltages of each phase are obtained. The SVPWM switching intervals of each phase can be derived by the average output voltages that are calculated according to the current polarity and nonlinear voltage distortion to compensate for the output voltage errors. With the simple detection of the current polarity, the practical errors of the switching intervals of each phase can be compensated by the addition of the compensated switching time. Paralleled inverters are not only a suitable approach to increase the power capacity, but also have the capability of common mode voltage (CMV) reduction, or even elimination. The original zero CMV modulation scheme for paralleled inverters suffers from the current jump problem in phase-leg currents. This current jump phenomenon amplifies the peak values of differential-mode circulating current (DMCC) and zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC), which is adverse for the design of coupled inductor and common-mode inductor. This paper introduces the modified modulation scheme, which can keep volt-seconds balance in whole fundamental period and mitigate the current jump in phase-leg currents. In addition, the reduction effect of the DMCC and ZSCC can be achieved. To verify the analysis, both the simulation and experimental results are presented, which validates the proposed methods and show that they are beneficial for DMCC and ZSCC reduction. Three optimized pulse-width modulated (PWM) techniques for the overmodulation region of two-level inverter-fed ac drives are introduced and investigated from the harmonic loss minimization point of view. The optimization is elaborated for the lowest loss-factor, which is proportional to the square of the root mean square value of current harmonics. The loss-factors are computed for different switching numbers as the function of the motor fundamental voltage. It is shown that, with respect to the motor heating and torque ripples, the acceptable drive condition can be guaranteed by a relatively low value of an inverter switching frequency up to 96%–97% of maximal possible motor voltage. Furthermore, it is shown that the so-called three-vector methods have considerably better performance in the lower part of the overmodulation region than the so-called two-vector method for the same number of switching. The performance of the techniques is compared with other existing PWM techniques. This paper discusses the implementation details of the proposed optimal PWM techniques.
