Scene text detection is an important research field in computer vision, playing a crucial role in various application scenarios. However, existing scene text detection methods often fail to achieve satisfactory results when faced with text instances of different sizes, shapes, and complex backgrounds. To address the challenge of detecting diverse texts in natural scenes, this paper proposes a multi-scale natural scene text detection method based on attention feature extraction and cascaded feature fusion. This method combines global and local attention through an improved attention feature fusion module (DSAF) to capture text features of different scales, enhancing the network's perception of text regions and improving its feature extraction capabilities. Simultaneously, an improved cascaded feature fusion module (PFFM) is used to fully integrate the extracted feature maps, expanding the receptive field of features and enriching the expressive ability of the feature maps. Finally, to address the cascaded feature maps, a lightweight subspace attention module (SAM) is introduced to partition the concatenated feature maps into several sub-space feature maps, facilitating spatial information interaction among features of different scales. In this paper, comparative experiments are conducted on the ICDAR2015, Total-Text, and MSRA-TD500 datasets, and comparisons are made with some existing scene text detection methods. Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human–computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends. Accelerometers are commonly used to measure vibrations for condition monitoring in mechanical and civil structures; however, their high cost and point-based measurement approach present practical limitations. With rapid advancements in computer vision and deep learning, research into tracking the motion of individual pixels with vision cameras has increased. The recently developed CoTracker, a transformer-based model, has demonstrated excellence in motion tracking, yet its performance in measuring structural vibrations has not been fully explored. This paper investigates the efficacy of the CoTracker model in extracting full-field structural vibrations using cameras. It is initially applied to capture the dense point movements in video sequences of a cantilever beam recorded using a high-speed camera. Subsequently, modal analysis using delay-embedding dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is conducted to extract modal parameters including natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. The results, benchmarked against those from a reference accelerometer and the Finite Element Method (FEM) result, demonstrate CoTracker's high potential for general applicability in structural vibration measurements. Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the NU-Spidercam dataset from maize plots. The proposed method outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning models in prediction accuracy and speed. Remarkably, it achieves up to 40 % higher Intersection-over-Union (IoU) than the threshold method and 11 % over conventional machine learning, with significantly faster prediction times and manageable training duration. Crucially, it demonstrates that even small labeled datasets can yield high accuracy in semantic segmentation. This approach not only proves effective for FHTPP but also suggests potential for broader application in remote sensing, offering a scalable solution to semantic segmentation challenges. The field of computer vision has been focusing on achieving accurate three-dimensional (3D) object representations from a single two-dimensional (2D) image through deep artificial neural networks. Recent advancements in 3D shape reconstruction techniques that combine structured light and deep learning show promise in acquiring high-quality geometric information about object surfaces. This paper introduces a new single-shot 3D shape reconstruction method that uses a nonlinear fringe transformation approach through both supervised and unsupervised learning networks. In this method, a deep learning network learns to convert a grayscale fringe input into multiple phase-shifted fringe outputs with different frequencies, which act as an intermediate result for the subsequent 3D reconstruction process using the structured-light fringe projection profilometry technique. Experiments have been conducted to validate the practicality and robustness of the proposed technique. The experimental results demonstrate that the unsupervised learning approach using a deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) is superior to the supervised learning approach using UNet in image-to-image generation. The sky may seem big enough for two flying vehicles to collide, but the facts show that mid-air collisions still occur occasionally and are a significant concern. Pilots learn manual tactics to avoid collisions, such as see-and-avoid, but these rules have limitations. Automated solutions have reduced collisions, but these technologies are not mandatory in all countries or airspaces, and they are expensive. These problems have prompted researchers to continue the search for low-cost solutions. One attractive solution is to use computer vision to detect obstacles in the air due to its reduced cost and weight. A well-trained deep learning solution is appealing because object detection is fast in most cases, but it relies entirely on the training data set. The algorithm chosen for this study is optical flow. The optical flow vectors can help us to separate the motion caused by camera motion from the motion caused by incoming objects without relying on training data. This paper describes the development of an optical flow-based airborne obstacle detection algorithm to avoid mid-air collisions. The approach uses the visual information from a monocular camera and detects the obstacles using morphological filters, optical flow, focus of expansion, and a data clustering algorithm. The proposal was evaluated using realistic vision data obtained with a self-developed simulator. The simulator provides different environments, trajectories, and altitudes of flying objects. The results showed that the optical flow-based algorithm detected all incoming obstacles along their trajectories in the experiments. Structural engineers are often required to draw two-dimensional engineering sketches for quick structural analysis, either by hand calculation or using analysis software. However, calculation by hand is slow and error-prone, and the manual conversion of a hand-drawn sketch into a virtual model is tedious and time-consuming. This paper presents a complete and autonomous framework for converting a hand-drawn engineering sketch into an analyzed structural model using a camera and computer vision. In this framework, a computer vision object detection stage initially extracts information about the raw features in the image of the beam diagram. Next, a computer vision number-reading model transcribes any handwritten numerals appearing in the image. Then, feature association models are applied to characterize the relationships among the detected features in order to build a comprehensive structural model. Finally, the structural model generated is analyzed using OpenSees. In the system presented, the object detection model achieves a mean average precision of 99.1%, the number-reading model achieves an accuracy of 99.0%, and the models in the feature association stage achieve accuracies ranging from 95.1% to 99.5%. Overall, the tool analyzes 45.0% of images entirely correctly and the remaining 55.0% of images partially correctly. The proposed framework holds promise for other types of structural sketches, such as trusses and frames. The Internet of Things (IoT), projected to exceed 30 billion active device connections globally by 2025, presents an expansive attack surface. The frequent collection and dissemination of confidential data on these devices exposes them to significant security risks, including user information theft and denial-of-service attacks. This paper introduces a smart, network-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) designed to protect IoT networks from distributed denial-of-service attacks. Our methodology involves generating synthetic images from flow-level traffic data of the Bot-IoT and the LATAM-DDoS-IoT datasets and conducting experiments within both supervised and self-supervised learning paradigms. Self-supervised learning is identified in the state of the art as a promising solution to replace the need for massive amounts of manually labeled data, as well as providing robust generalization. Our results showcase that self-supervised learning surpassed supervised learning in terms of classification performance for certain tests. Specifically, it exceeded the F1 score of supervised learning for attack detection by 4.83% and by 14.61% in accuracy for the multiclass task of protocol classification. Drawing from extensive ablation studies presented in our research, we recommend an optimal training framework for upcoming contrastive learning experiments that emphasize visual representations in the cybersecurity realm. This training approach has enabled us to highlight the broader applicability of self-supervised learning, which, in some instances, outperformed supervised learning transferability by over 5% in precision and nearly 1% in F1 score. The fusion of infrared and visible images is a well-researched task in computer vision. These fusion methods create fused images replacing the manual observation of single sensor image, often deployed on edge devices for real-time processing. However, there is an issue of information imbalance between infrared and visible images. Existing methods often fail to emphasize temperature and edge texture information, potentially leading to misinterpretations. Moreover, these methods are computationally complex, and challenging for edge device adaptation. This paper proposes a method that calculates the distribution proportion of infrared pixel values, allocating fusion weights to adaptively highlight key information. It introduces a weight allocation mechanism and MobileBlock with a multispectral information complementary module, innovations which strengthened the model's fusion capabilities, made it more lightweight, and ensured information compensation. Training involves a temperature-color-perception loss function, enabling adaptive weight allocation based on image pair information. Detecting parcels accurately and efficiently has always been a challenging task when unloading from trucks onto conveyor belts because of the diverse and complex ways in which parcels are stacked. Conventional methods struggle to quickly and accurately classify the various shapes and surface patterns of unordered parcels. In this paper, we propose a parcel-picking surface detection method based on deep learning and image processing for the efficient unloading of diverse and unordered parcels. Our goal is to develop a systematic image processing algorithm that emphasises the boundaries of parcels regardless of their shape, pattern, or layout. The core of the algorithm is the utilisation of RGB-D technology for detecting the primary boundary lines regardless of obstacles such as adhesive labels, tapes, or parcel surface patterns. For cases where detecting the boundary lines is difficult owing to narrow gaps between parcels, we propose using deep learning-based boundary line detection through the You Only Look at Coefficients (YOLACT) model. Using image segmentation techniques, the algorithm efficiently predicts boundary lines, enabling the accurate detection of irregularly sized parcels with complex surface patterns. Furthermore, even for rotated parcels, we can extract their edges through complex mathematical operations using the depth values of the specified position, enabling the detection of the wider surfaces of the rotated parcels. Finally, we validate the accuracy and real-time performance of our proposed method through various case studies, achieving mAP (50) values of 93.8% and 90.8% for randomly sized and rotationally covered boxes with diverse colours and patterns, respectively. Recently, 6DoF object pose estimation has become increasingly important for a broad range of applications in the fields of virtual reality, augmented reality, autonomous driving, and robotic operations. This task involves extracting the target area from the input data and subsequently determining the position and orientation of the objects. In recent years, many new advances have been made in pose estimation. However, existing reviews have the problem of only summarizing category-level or instance-level methods, and not comprehensively summarizing deep learning methods. This paper will provide a comprehensive review of the latest progress in 6D pose estimation to help researchers better understanding this area. In this study, the current methods about 6DoF object pose estimation are mainly categorized into two groups: instance-level and category-level groups, based on whether it is necessary to acquire the CAD model of the object. Recent advancements about learning-based 6DoF pose estimation methods are comprehensively reviewed. The study systematically explores the innovations and applicable scenarios of various methods. It provides an overview of widely used datasets, task metrics, and diverse application scenarios. Furthermore, state-of-the-art methods are compared across publicly accessible datasets, taking into account differences in input data types. In the process of industrial production, manual assembly of workpieces exists with low efficiency and high intensity, and some of the assembly process of the human body has a certain degree of danger. At the same time, traditional machine learning algorithms are difficult to adapt to the complexity of the current industrial field environment; the change in the environment will greatly affect the accuracy of the robot's work. Therefore, this paper proposes a method based on the combination of machine vision and the YOLOv5 deep learning model to obtain the disk porous localization information, after coordinate mapping by the ROS communication control robotic arm work, in order to improve the anti-interference ability of the environment and work efficiency but also reduce the danger to the human body. The system utilizes a camera to collect real-time images of targets in complex environments and, then, trains and processes them for recognition such that coordinate localization information can be obtained. This information is converted into coordinates under the robot coordinate system through hand–eye calibration, and the robot is then controlled to complete multi-hole localization and tracking by means of communication between the upper and lower computers. The results show that there is a high accuracy in the training and testing of the target object, and the control accuracy of the robotic arm is also relatively high. The method has strong anti-interference to the complex environment of industry and exhibits a certain feasibility and effectiveness. It lays a foundation for achieving the automated installation of docking disk workpieces in industrial production and also provides a more favorable choice for the production and installation of the process of screw positioning needs. In this paper, we present the development of a low-cost distributed computing pipeline for cotton plant phenotyping using Raspberry Pi, Hadoop, and deep learning. Specifically, we use a cluster of several Raspberry Pis in a primary-replica distributed architecture using the Apache Hadoop ecosystem and a pre-trained Tiny-YOLOv4 model for cotton bloom detection from our past work. We feed cotton image data collected from a research field in Tifton, GA, into our cluster's distributed file system for robust file access and distributed, parallel processing. We then submit job requests to our cluster from our client to process cotton image data in a distributed and parallel fashion, from pre-processing to bloom detection and spatio-temporal map creation. Additionally, we present a comparison of our four-node cluster performance with centralized, one-, two-, and three-node clusters. Fire incidents occurring onboard ships cause significant consequences that result in substantial effects. Fires on ships can have extensive and severe wide-ranging impacts on matters such as the safety of the crew, cargo, the environment, finances, reputation, etc. Therefore, timely detection of fires is essential for quick responses and powerful mitigation. The study in this research paper presents a fire detection technique based on YOLOv7 (You Only Look Once version 7), incorporating improved deep learning algorithms. The YOLOv7 architecture, with an improved E-ELAN (extended efficient layer aggregation network) as its backbone, serves as the basis of our fire detection system. Its enhanced feature fusion technique makes it superior to all its predecessors. To train the model, we collected 4622 images of various ship scenarios and performed data augmentation techniques such as rotation, horizontal and vertical flips, and scaling. Our model, through rigorous evaluation, showcases enhanced capabilities of fire recognition to improve maritime safety. The proposed strategy successfully achieves an accuracy of 93% in detecting fires to minimize catastrophic incidents. Objects having visual similarities to fire may lead to false prediction and detection by the model, but this can be controlled by expanding the dataset. However, our model can be utilized as a real-time fire detector in challenging environments and for small-object detection. Advancements in deep learning models hold the potential to enhance safety measures, and our proposed model in this paper exhibits this potential. Experimental results proved that the proposed method can be used successfully for the protection of ships and in monitoring fires in ship port areas. Finally, we compared the performance of our method with those of recently reported fire-detection approaches employing widely used performance matrices to test the fire classification results achieved. Anomaly detection in video surveillance is a highly developed subject that is attracting increased attention from the research community. There is great demand for intelligent systems with the capacity to automatically detect anomalous events in streaming videos. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the deep learning-based techniques used in the field of video anomaly detection. Specifically, deep learning-based approaches have been categorized into different methods by their objectives and learning metrics. Additionally, preprocessing and feature engineering techniques are discussed thoroughly for the vision-based domain. This paper also describes the benchmark databases used in training and detecting abnormal human behavior. Gait recognition, also known as walking pattern recognition, has expressed deep interest in the computer vision and biometrics community due to its potential to identify individuals from a distance. It has attracted increasing attention due to its potential applications and non-invasive nature. Since 2014, deep learning approaches have shown promising results in gait recognition by automatically extracting features. However, recognizing gait accurately is challenging due to the covariate factors, complexity and variability of environments, and human body representations. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements made in this field along with the challenges and limitations associated with deep learning methods. For that, it initially examines the various gait datasets used in the literature review and analyzes the performance of state-of-the-art techniques. After that, a taxonomy of deep learning methods is presented to characterize and organize the research landscape in this field. Furthermore, the taxonomy highlights the basic limitations of deep learning methods in the context of gait recognition. Bone age assessment (BAA) is a typical clinical technique for diagnosing endocrine and metabolic diseases in children's development. Existing deep learning-based automatic BAA models are trained on the Radiological Society of North America dataset (RSNA) from Western populations. However, due to the difference in developmental process and BAA standards between Eastern and Western children, these models cannot be applied to bone age prediction in Eastern populations. To address this issue, this paper collects a bone age dataset based on the East Asian populations for model training. Nevertheless, it is laborious and difficult to obtain enough X-ray images with accurate labels. In this paper, we employ ambiguous labels from radiology reports and transform them into Gaussian distribution labels of different amplitudes. Furthermore, we propose multi-branch attention learning with ambiguous labels network (MAAL-Net). MAAL-Net consists of a hand object location module and an attention part extraction module to discover the informative regions of interest (ROIs) based only on image-level labels. Extensive experiments on both the RSNA dataset and the China Bone Age (CNBA) dataset demonstrate that our method achieves competitive results with the state-of-the-arts, and performs on par with experienced physicians in children's BAA tasks. Image stitching involves combining multiple images of the same scene captured from different viewpoints into a single image with an expanded field of view. While this technique has various applications in computer vision, traditional methods rely on the successive stitching of image pairs taken from multiple cameras. While this approach is effective for organized camera arrays, it can pose challenges for unstructured ones, especially when handling scene overlaps. This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for stitching images from large unstructured camera sets covering complex scenes. Our method processes images concurrently by using the SandFall algorithm to transform data from multiple cameras into a reduced fixed array, thereby minimizing data loss. A customized convolutional neural network then processes these data to produce the final image. By stitching images simultaneously, our method avoids the potential cascading errors seen in sequential pairwise stitching while offering improved time efficiency. In addition, we detail an unsupervised training method for the network utilizing metrics from Generative Adversarial Networks supplemented with supervised learning. Our testing revealed that the proposed approach operates in roughly ∼1/7th the time of many traditional methods on both CPU and GPU platforms, achieving results consistent with established methods. In the production process of progressive die stamping, anomaly detection is essential for ensuring the safety of expensive dies and the continuous stability of the production process. Early monitoring processes involve manually inspecting the quality of post-production products to infer whether there are anomalies in the production process, or using some sensors to monitor some state signals during the production process. However, the former is an extremely tedious and time-consuming task, and the latter cannot provide warnings before anomalies occur. Both methods can only detect anomalies after they have occurred, which usually means that damage to the die has already been caused. In this paper, we propose a machine-vision-based method for real-time anomaly detection in the production of progressive die stamping. This method can detect anomalies before they cause actual damage to the mold, thereby stopping the machine and protecting the mold and machine. In the proposed method, a whole continuous motion scene cycle is decomposed into a standard background template library, and the potential anomaly regions in the image to be detected are determined according to the difference from the background template library. Finally, the shape- and size-adaptive descriptors of these regions and corresponding reference regions are extracted and compared to determine the actual anomaly regions. The experimental results indicate that this method can achieve reasonable accuracy in the detection of anomalies in the production process of stamping progressive dies. The experimental results demonstrate that this method not only achieves satisfactory accuracy in anomaly detection during the production of progressive die stamping, but also attains competitive performance levels when compared with methods based on deep learning. Deep Learning (DL) has provided a significant breakthrough in many areas of research and industry. The development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has enabled the improvement of computer vision-based techniques, making the information gathered from cameras more useful. For this reason, recently, studies have been carried out on the use of image-based DL in some areas of people's daily life. In this paper, an object detection-based algorithm is proposed to modify and improve the user experience in relation to the use of cooking appliances. The algorithm can sense common kitchen objects and identify interesting situations for users. Some of these situations are the detection of utensils on lit hobs, recognition of boiling, smoking and oil in kitchenware, and determination of good cookware size adjustment, among others. In addition, the authors have achieved sensor fusion by using a cooker hob with Bluetooth connectivity, so it is possible to automatically interact with it via an external device such as a computer or a mobile phone. Our main contribution focuses on supporting people when they are cooking, controlling heaters, or alerting them with different types of alarms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a YOLO algorithm has been used to control the cooktop by means of visual sensorization. Moreover, this research paper provides a comparison of the detection performance among different YOLO networks. Additionally, a dataset of more than 7500 images has been generated and multiple data augmentation techniques have been compared. The results show that YOLOv5s can successfully detect common kitchen objects with high accuracy and fast speed, and it can be employed for realistic cooking environment applications. Given the increased interest in utilizing artificial intelligence as an assistive tool in the medical sector, colorectal polyp detection and classification using deep learning techniques has been an active area of research in recent years. The motivation for researching this topic is that physicians miss polyps from time to time due to fatigue and lack of experience carrying out the procedure. Unidentified polyps can cause further complications and ultimately lead to colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the leading causes of cancer mortality. Although various techniques have been presented recently, several key issues, such as the lack of enough training data, white light reflection, and blur affect the performance of such methods. This paper presents a survey on recently proposed methods for detecting polyps from colonoscopy. The survey covers benchmark dataset analysis, evaluation metrics, common challenges, standard methods of building polyp detectors and a review of the latest work in the literature. Crowd counting, as a basic computer vision task, plays an important role in many fields such as video surveillance, accident prediction, public security, and intelligent transportation. At present, crowd counting tasks face various challenges. Firstly, due to the diversity of crowd distribution and increasing population density, there is a phenomenon of large-scale crowd aggregation in public places, sports stadiums, and stations, resulting in very serious occlusion. Secondly, when annotating large-scale datasets, positioning errors can also easily affect training results. In addition, the size of human head targets in dense images is not consistent, making it difficult to identify both near and far targets using only one network simultaneously. The existing crowd counting methods mainly use density plot regression methods. However, this framework does not distinguish the features between distant and near targets and cannot adaptively respond to scale changes. Therefore, the detection performance in areas with sparse population distribution is not good. To solve such problems, we propose an adaptive multi-scale far and near distance network based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for counting dense populations and achieving a good balance between accuracy, inference speed, and performance. However, on the feature level, in order to enable the model to distinguish the differences between near and far features, we use stacked convolution layers to deepen the depth of the network, allocate different receptive fields according to the distance between the target and the camera, and fuse the features between nearby targets to enhance the feature extraction ability of pedestrians under nearby targets. Secondly, depth information is used to distinguish distant and near targets of different scales and the original image is cut into four different patches to perform pixel-level adaptive modeling on the population. In addition, we add density normalized average precision (nAP) indicators to analyze the accuracy of our method in spatial positioning. This paper validates the effectiveness of NF-Net on three challenging benchmarks in Shanghai Tech Part A and B, UCF_ CC_50, and UCF-QNRF datasets. Compared with SOTA, it has more significant performance in various scenarios. Video anomaly event detection (VAED) is one of the key technologies in computer vision for smart surveillance systems. With the advent of deep learning, contemporary advances in VAED have achieved substantial success. Recently, weakly supervised VAED (WVAED) has become a popular VAED technical route of research. WVAED methods do not depend on a supplementary self-supervised substitute task, yet they can assess anomaly scores straightway. However, the performance of WVAED methods depends on pretrained feature extractors. In this paper, we first address taking advantage of two pretrained feature extractors for CNN (e.g., C3D and I3D) and ViT (e.g., CLIP), for effectively extracting discerning representations. We then consider long-range and short-range temporal dependencies and put forward video snippets of interest by leveraging our proposed temporal self-attention network (TSAN). We design a multiple instance learning (MIL)-based generalized architecture named CNN-ViT-TSAN, by using CNN- and/or ViT-extracted features and TSAN to specify a series of models for the WVAED problem. Traffic sign detection is a crucial task in computer vision, finding wide-ranging applications in intelligent transportation systems, autonomous driving, and traffic safety. However, due to the complexity and variability of traffic environments and the small size of traffic signs, detecting small traffic signs in real-world scenes remains a challenging problem. In order to improve the recognition of road traffic signs, this paper proposes a small object detection algorithm for traffic signs based on the improved YOLOv7. First, the small target detection layer in the neck region was added to augment the detection capability for small traffic sign targets. Simultaneously, the integration of self-attention and convolutional mix modules (ACmix) was applied to the newly added small target detection layer, enabling the capture of additional feature information through the convolutional and self-attention channels within ACmix. Furthermore, the feature extraction capability of the convolution modules was enhanced by replacing the regular convolution modules in the neck layer with omni-dimensional dynamic convolution (ODConv). To further enhance the accuracy of small target detection, the normalized Gaussian Wasserstein distance (NWD) metric was introduced to mitigate the sensitivity to minor positional deviations of small objects. The experimental results on the challenging public dataset TT100K demonstrate that the SANO-YOLOv7 algorithm achieved an 88.7% mAP@0.5, outperforming the baseline model YOLOv7 by 5.3%. Object detection and tracking in camera images is a fundamental technology for computer vision and is used in various applications. In particular, object tracking using high-speed cameras is expected to be applied to real-time control in robotics. Therefore, it is required to increase tracking speed and detection accuracy. Currently, however, it is difficult to achieve both of those things simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a tracking method that combines multiple methods: correlation filter-based object tracking, deep learning-based object detection, and motion detection with background subtraction. The algorithms work in parallel and assist each other's processing to improve the overall performance of the system. We named it the "Mutual Assist tracker of feature Filters and Detectors (MAFiD method)". This method aims to achieve both high-speed tracking of moving objects and high detection accuracy. Experiments were conducted to verify the detection performance and processing speed by tracking a transparent capsule moving at high speed. The results show that the tracking speed was 618 frames per second (FPS) and the accuracy was 86% for Intersection over Union (IoU). The detection latency was 3.48 ms. These experimental scores are higher than those of conventional methods, indicating that the MAFiD method achieved fast object tracking while maintaining high detection performance. With the rapid development of deep learning technology and its ever-increasing range of successful applications across diverse sensor systems, there is an urgent need to provide a comprehensive investigation of deep learning in this domain from a holistic view. This survey paper aims to contribute to this by systematically investigating deep learning models/methods and their applications across diverse sensor systems. It also provides a comprehensive summary of deep learning implementation tips and links to tutorials, open-source codes, and pretrained models, which can serve as an excellent self-contained reference for deep learning practitioners and those seeking to innovate deep learning in this space. In addition, this paper provides insights into research topics in diverse sensor systems where deep learning has not yet been well-developed, and highlights challenges and future opportunities. The purpose of image dehazing is to remove the interference from weather factors in degraded images and enhance the clarity and color saturation of images to maximize the restoration of useful features. Single image dehazing is one of the most important tasks in the field of image restoration. In recent years, due to the progress of deep learning, single image dehazing has made great progress. With the success of Transformer in advanced computer vision tasks, some research studies also began to apply Transformer to image dehazing tasks and obtained surprising results. However, both the deconvolution-neural-network-based dehazing algorithm and Transformer based dehazing algorithm magnify their advantages and disadvantages separately. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network (TCFDN), which uses Transformer's global modeling ability and convolutional neural network's local modeling ability to improve the dehazing ability. In the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network, the classic self-encoder structure is used. This paper proposes a Transformer–Convolution hybrid layer, which uses an adaptive fusion strategy to make full use of the Swin-Transformer and convolutional neural network to extract and reconstruct image features. On the basis of previous research, this layer further improves the ability of the network to remove haze. A series of contrast experiments and ablation experiments not only proved that the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network proposed in this paper exceeded the more advanced dehazing algorithm, but also provided solid and powerful evidence for the basic theory on which it depends. This paper addresses the problem of nonlinear and dotted defect detection for multi-vision-based mask inspection systems in mask manufacturing lines. As the mask production amounts increased due to the spread of COVID-19 around the world, the mask inspection systems require more efficient defect detection algorithms. However, the traditional computer vision detection algorithms suffer from various types and very small sizes of the nonlinear and dotted defects on masks. This paper proposes a deep learning-based mask defect detection method, which includes a convolutional neural network (CNN) and efficient preprocessing. The proposed method was developed to be applied to real manufacturing systems, and thus all the training and inference processes were conducted with real data produced by real mask manufacturing systems. Background: The planetary rover is an essential platform for planetary exploration. Visual semantic segmentation is significant in the localization, perception, and path planning of the rover autonomy. Recent advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence brought about new opportunities. A systematic literature review (SLR) can help analyze existing solutions, discover available data, and identify potential gaps. Methods: A rigorous SLR has been conducted, and papers are selected from three databases (IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus) from the start of records to May 2022. The 320 candidate studies were found by searching with keywords and bool operators, and they address the semantic terrain segmentation in the navigation vision of planetary rovers. Finally, after four rounds of screening, 30 papers were included with robust inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as quality assessment. Results: 30 studies were included for the review, and sub-research areas include navigation (16 studies), geological analysis (7 studies), exploration efficiency (10 studies), and others (3 studies) (overlaps exist). Five distributions are extendedly depicted (time, study type, geographical location, publisher, and experimental setting), which analyzes the included study from the view of community interests, development status, and reimplementation ability. One key research question and six sub-research questions are discussed to evaluate the current achievements and future gaps. Conclusions: Many promising achievements in accuracy, available data, and real-time performance have been promoted by computer vision and artificial intelligence. However, a solution that satisfies pixel-level segmentation, real-time inference time, and onboard hardware does not exist, and an open, pixel-level annotated, and the real-world data-based dataset is not found. As planetary exploration projects progress worldwide, more promising studies will be proposed, and deep learning will bring more opportunities and contributions to future studies. Image recognition has long been one of the research hotspots in computer vision tasks. The development of deep learning is rapid in recent years, and convolutional neural networks usually need to be designed with fixed resources. If sufficient resources are available, the model can be scaled up to achieve higher accuracy, for example, VggNet, ResNet, GoogLeNet, etc. Although the accuracy of large-scale models has been improved, the following problems will occur with the expansion of model scale: (1) There may be over-fitting; (2) increasing model parameters; (3) slow model convergence. This paper proposes a design method for a modular convolutional neural network model which solves the problem of over-fitting and large model parameters by connecting multiple modules in parallel. Moreover, each module contains several submodules (three submodules in this paper) and fuses the features extracted from the submodules. The model convergence can be accelerated by using the fused features (the fused features contain more image information). In this study, we add a gate unit based on the attention mechanism to the model, which aims to optimize the structure of the model (select the optimal number of modules), allowing the model to select an optimum network structure by learning and dynamically reducing FLOPs (floating-point operations per second) of the model. Compared to VggNet, ResNet, and GoogLeNet, the structure of the model proposed in this paper is simple and the parameters are small. Tea bud target detection is essential for mechanized selective harvesting. To address the challenges of low detection precision caused by the complex backgrounds of tea leaves, this paper introduces a novel model called Tea-YOLOv8s. First, multiple data augmentation techniques are employed to increase the amount of information in the images and improve their quality. Then, the Tea-YOLOv8s model combines deformable convolutions, attention mechanisms, and improved spatial pyramid pooling, thereby enhancing the model's ability to learn complex object invariance, reducing interference from irrelevant factors, and enabling multi-feature fusion, resulting in improved detection precision. Finally, the improved YOLOv8 model is compared with other models to validate the effectiveness of the proposed improvements. The research results demonstrate that the Tea-YOLOv8s model achieves a mean average precision of 88.27% and an inference time of 37.1 ms, with an increase in the parameters and calculation amount by 15.4 M and 17.5 G, respectively. In conclusion, although the proposed approach increases the model's parameters and calculation amount, it significantly improves various aspects compared to mainstream YOLO detection models and has the potential to be applied to tea buds picked by mechanization equipment. Model evaluation is critical in deep learning. However, the traditional model evaluation approach is susceptible to issues of untrustworthiness, including insecure data and model sharing, insecure model training, incorrect model evaluation, centralized model evaluation, and evaluation results that can be tampered easily. To minimize these untrustworthiness issues, this paper proposes a blockchain-based model evaluation framework. The framework consists of an access control layer, a storage layer, a model training layer, and a model evaluation layer. The access control layer facilitates secure resource sharing. To achieve fine-grained and flexible access control, an attribute-based access control model combining the idea of a role-based access control model is adopted. A smart contract is designed to manage the access control policies stored in the blockchain ledger. The storage layer ensures efficient and secure storage of resources. Resource files are stored in the IPFS, with the encrypted results of their index addresses recorded in the blockchain ledger. Another smart contract is designed to achieve decentralized and efficient management of resource records. The model training layer performs training on users' servers, and, to ensure security, the training data must have records in the blockchain. The model evaluation layer utilizes the recorded data to evaluate the recorded models. A method in the smart contract of the storage layer is designed to enable evaluation, with scores automatically uploaded as a resource attribute. The proposed framework is applied to deep learning-based motion object segmentation, demonstrating its key functionalities. Despite the substantial progress achieved in the development and integration of augmented reality (AR) in surgical robotic and autonomous systems (RAS), the center of focus in most devices remains on improving end-effector dexterity and precision, as well as improved access to minimally invasive surgeries. This paper aims to provide a systematic review of different types of state-of-the-art surgical robotic platforms while identifying areas for technological improvement. We associate specific control features, such as haptic feedback, sensory stimuli, and human–robot collaboration, with AR technology to perform complex surgical interventions for increased user perception of the augmented world. Current researchers in the field have, for long, faced innumerable issues with low accuracy in tool placement around complex trajectories, pose estimation, and difficulty in depth perception during two-dimensional medical imaging. A number of robots described in this review, such as Novarad and SpineAssist, are analyzed in terms of their hardware features, computer vision systems (such as deep learning algorithms), and the clinical relevance of the literature. We attempt to outline the shortcomings in current optimization algorithms for surgical robots (such as YOLO and LTSM) whilst providing mitigating solutions to internal tool-to-organ collision detection and image reconstruction. The accuracy of results in robot end-effector collisions and reduced occlusion remain promising within the scope of our research, validating the propositions made for the surgical clearance of ever-expanding AR technology in the future. Recently, there has been a substantial increase in the development of sensor technology. As enabling factors, computer vision (CV) combined with sensor technology have made progress in applications intended to mitigate high rates of fatalities and the costs of traffic-related injuries. Although past surveys and applications of CV have focused on subareas of road hazards, there is yet to be one comprehensive and evidence-based systematic review that investigates CV applications for Automated Road Defect and Anomaly Detection (ARDAD). To present ARDAD's state-of-the-art, this systematic review is focused on determining the research gaps, challenges, and future implications from selected papers (N = 116) between 2000 and 2023, relying primarily on Scopus and Litmaps services. The survey presents a selection of artefacts, including the most popular open-access datasets (D = 18), research and technology trends that with reported performance can help accelerate the application of rapidly advancing sensor technology in ARDAD and CV. Visually impaired people seek social integration, yet their mobility is restricted. They need a personal navigation system that can provide privacy and increase their confidence for better life quality. In this paper, based on deep learning and neural architecture search (NAS), we propose an intelligent navigation assistance system for visually impaired people. The deep learning model has achieved significant success through well-designed architecture. Subsequently, NAS has proved to be a promising technique for automatically searching for the optimal architecture and reducing human efforts for architecture design. However, this new technique requires extensive computation, limiting its wide use. Due to its high computation requirement, NAS has been less investigated for computer vision tasks, especially object detection. Therefore, we propose a fast NAS to search for an object detection framework by considering efficiency. The NAS will be used to explore the feature pyramid network and the prediction stage for an anchor-free object detection model. The proposed NAS is based on a tailored reinforcement learning technique. The searched model was evaluated on a combination of the Coco dataset and the Indoor Object Detection and Recognition (IODR) dataset. The resulting model outperformed the original model by 2.6% in average precision (AP) with acceptable computation complexity. Changes in pig behavior are crucial information in the livestock breeding process, and automatic pig behavior recognition is a vital method for improving pig welfare. However, most methods for pig behavior recognition rely on human observation and deep learning. Human observation is often time-consuming and labor-intensive, while deep learning models with a large number of parameters can result in slow training times and low efficiency. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel deep mutual learning enhanced two-stream pig behavior recognition approach. The proposed model consists of two mutual learning networks, which include the red–green–blue color model (RGB) and flow streams. Additionally, each branch contains two student networks that learn collaboratively to effectively achieve robust and rich appearance or motion features, ultimately leading to improved recognition performance of pig behaviors. Finally, the results of RGB and flow branches are weighted and fused to further improve the performance of pig behavior recognition. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model, which achieves state-of-the-art recognition performance with an accuracy of 96.52%, surpassing other models by 2.71%. The counting of surgical instruments is an important task to ensure surgical safety and patient health. However, due to the uncertainty of manual operations, there is a risk of missing or miscounting instruments. Applying computer vision technology to the instrument counting process can not only improve efficiency, but also reduce medical disputes and promote the development of medical informatization. However, during the counting process, surgical instruments may be densely arranged or obstruct each other, and they may be affected by different lighting environments, all of which can affect the accuracy of instrument recognition. In addition, similar instruments may have only minor differences in appearance and shape, which increases the difficulty of identification. To address these issues, this paper improves the YOLOv7x object detection algorithm and applies it to the surgical instrument detection task. First, the RepLK Block module is introduced into the YOLOv7x backbone network, which can increase the effective receptive field and guide the network to learn more shape features. Second, the ODConv structure is introduced into the neck module of the network, which can significantly enhance the feature extraction ability of the basic convolution operation of the CNN and capture more rich contextual information. At the same time, we created the OSI26 data set, which contains 452 images and 26 surgical instruments, for model training and evaluation. The experimental results show that our improved algorithm exhibits higher accuracy and robustness in surgical instrument detection tasks, with F1, AP, AP50, and AP75 reaching 94.7%, 91.5%, 99.1%, and 98.2%, respectively, which are 4.6%, 3.1%, 3.6%, and 3.9% higher than the baseline. Compared to other mainstream object detection algorithms, our method has significant advantages. With the increasing deployment of autonomous taxis in different cities around the world, recent studies have stressed the importance of developing new methods, models and tools for intuitive human–autonomous taxis interactions (HATIs). Street hailing is one example, where passengers would hail an autonomous taxi by simply waving a hand, exactly like they do for manned taxis. However, automated taxi street-hailing recognition has been explored to a very limited extent. In order to address this gap, in this paper, we propose a new method for the detection of taxi street hailing based on computer vision techniques. Our method is inspired by a quantitative study that we conducted with 50 experienced taxi drivers in the city of Tunis (Tunisia) in order to understand how they recognize street-hailing cases. Based on the interviews with taxi drivers, we distinguish between explicit and implicit street-hailing cases. Given a traffic scene, explicit street hailing is detected using three elements of visual information: the hailing gesture, the person's relative position to the road and the person's head orientation. Any person who is standing close to the road, looking towards the taxi and making a hailing gesture is automatically recognized as a taxi-hailing passenger. If some elements of the visual information are not detected, we use contextual information (such as space, time and weather) in order to evaluate the existence of implicit street-hailing cases. For example, a person who is standing on the roadside in the heat, looking towards the taxi but not waving his hand is still considered a potential passenger. Hence, the new method that we propose integrates both visual and contextual information in a computer-vision pipeline that we designed to detect taxi street-hailing cases from video streams collected by capturing devices mounted on moving taxis. We tested our pipeline using a dataset that we collected with a taxi on the roads of Tunis. Considering both explicit and implicit hailing scenarios, our method yields satisfactory results in relatively realistic settings, with an accuracy of 80%, a precision of 84% and a recall of 84%. Industrial inspection is crucial for maintaining quality and safety in industrial processes. Deep learning models have recently demonstrated promising results in such tasks. This paper proposes YOLOX-Ray, an efficient new deep learning architecture tailored for industrial inspection. YOLOX-Ray is based on the You Only Look Once (YOLO) object detection algorithms and integrates the SimAM attention mechanism for improved feature extraction in the Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) and Path Aggregation Network (PAN). Moreover, it also employs the Alpha-IoU cost function for enhanced small-scale object detection. YOLOX-Ray's performance was assessed in three case studies: hotspot detection, infrastructure crack detection and corrosion detection. The architecture outperforms all other configurations, achieving m A P 50 values of 89%, 99.6% and 87.7%, respectively. For the most challenging metric, m A P 50 : 95 , the achieved values were 44.7%, 66.1% and 51.8%, respectively. A comparative analysis demonstrated the importance of combining the SimAM attention mechanism with Alpha-IoU loss function for optimal performance. Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision. Over the past several years, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection models have significantly improved detection accuracyin terms of average precision (AP). Furthermore, feature pyramid networks (FPNs) are essential modules for object detection models to consider various object scales. However, the AP for small objects is lower than the AP for medium and large objects. It is difficult to recognize small objects because they do not have sufficient information, and information is lost in deeper CNN layers. This paper proposes a new FPN model named ssFPN (scale sequence (S 2 ) feature-based feature pyramid network) to detect multi-scale objects, especially small objects. We propose a new scale sequence (S 2 ) feature that is extracted by 3D convolution on the level of the FPN. It is defined and extracted from the FPN to strengthen the information on small objects based on scale-space theory. Motivated by this theory, the FPN is regarded as a scale space and extracts a scale sequence (S 2 ) feature by three-dimensional convolution on the level axis of the FPN. The defined feature is basically scale-invariant and is built on a high-resolution pyramid feature map for small objects. Additionally, the deigned S 2 feature can be extended to most object detection models based on FPNs. We also designed a feature-level super-resolution approach to show the efficiency of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature. We verified that the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature could improve the classification accuracy for low-resolution images by training a feature-level super-resolution model. To demonstrate the effect of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature, experiments on the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature built-in object detection approach including both one-stage and two-stage models were conducted on the MS COCO dataset. For the two-stage object detection models Faster R-CNN and Mask R-CNN with the S 2 feature, AP improvements of up to 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively, were achieved. Additionally, the AP S of each model was improved by 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the one-stage object detection models in the YOLO series were improved. For YOLOv4-P5, YOLOv4-P6, YOLOR-P6, YOLOR-W6, and YOLOR-D6 with the S 2 feature, 0.9%, 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.1%, and 0.1% AP improvements were observed. For small object detection, the AP S increased by 1.1%, 1.1%, 0.9%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively. Experiments using the feature-level super-resolution approach with the proposed scale sequence (S 2 ) feature were conducted on the CIFAR-100 dataset. By training the feature-level super-resolution model, we verified that ResNet-101 with the S 2 feature trained on LR images achieved a 55.2% classification accuracy, which was 1.6% higher than for ResNet-101 trained on HR images. Blind people often encounter challenges in managing their clothing, specifically in identifying defects such as stains or holes. With the progress of the computer vision field, it is crucial to minimize these limitations as much as possible to assist blind people with selecting appropriate clothing. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to use object detection technology to categorize and detect stains on garments. The defect detection system proposed in this study relies on the You Only Look Once (YOLO) architecture, which is a single-stage object detector that is well-suited for automated inspection tasks. The authors collected a dataset of clothing with defects and used it to train and evaluate the proposed system. The methodology used for the optimization of the defect detection system was based on three main components: (i) increasing the dataset with new defects, illumination conditions, and backgrounds, (ii) introducing data augmentation, and (iii) introducing defect classification. The authors compared and evaluated three different YOLOv5 models. Underground mining operations present critical safety hazards due to limited visibility and blind areas, which can lead to collisions between mobile machines and vehicles or persons, causing accidents and fatalities. This paper aims to survey the existing literature on anti-collision systems based on computer vision for pedestrian detection in underground mines, categorize them based on the types of sensors used, and evaluate their effectiveness in deep underground environments. A systematic review of the literature was conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to identify relevant research work on anti-collision systems for underground mining. The selected studies were analyzed and categorized based on the types of sensors used and their advantages and limitations in deep underground environments. This study provides an overview of the anti-collision systems used in underground mining, including cameras and lidar sensors, and their effectiveness in detecting pedestrians in deep underground environments. Anti-collision systems based on computer vision are effective in reducing accidents and fatalities in underground mining operations. However, their performance is influenced by factors, such as lighting conditions, sensor placement, and sensor range. The findings of this study have significant implications for the mining industry and could help improve safety in underground mining operations. In current decades, significant advancements in robotics engineering and autonomous vehicles have improved the requirement for precise depth measurements. Depth estimation (DE) is a traditional task in computer vision that can be appropriately predicted by applying numerous procedures. This task is vital in disparate applications such as augmented reality and target tracking. Conventional monocular DE (MDE) procedures are based on depth cues for depth prediction. Various deep learning techniques have demonstrated their potential applications in managing and supporting the traditional ill-posed problem. The principal purpose of this paper is to represent a state-of-the-art review of the current developments in MDE based on deep learning techniques. For this goal, this paper tries to highlight the critical points of the state-of-the-art works on MDE from disparate aspects. These aspects include input data shapes and training manners such as supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised learning approaches in combination with applying different datasets and evaluation indicators. At last, limitations regarding the accuracy of the DL-based MDE models, computational time requirements, real-time inference, transferability, input images shape and domain adaptation, and generalization are discussed to open new directions for future research. Road condition monitoring (RCM) has been a demanding strategic research area in maintaining a large network of transport infrastructures. With advancements in computer vision and data mining techniques along with high computing resources, several innovative pavement distress evaluation systems have been developed in recent years. The majority of these technologies employ next-generation distributed sensors and vision-based artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies to evaluate, classify and localize pavement distresses using the measured data. This paper presents an exhaustive and systematic literature review of these technologies in RCM that have been published from 2017–2022 by utilizing next-generation sensors, including contact and noncontact measurements. The various methodologies and innovative contributions of the existing literature reviewed in this paper, together with their limitations, promise a futuristic insight for researchers and transport infrastructure owners. The decisive role played by smart sensors and data acquisition platforms, such as smartphones, drones, vehicles integrated with non-intrusive sensors, such as RGB, and thermal cameras, lasers and GPR sensors in the performance of the system are also highlighted. In addition to sensing, a discussion on the prevalent challenges in the development of AI technologies as well as potential areas for further exploration paves the way for an all-inclusive and well-directed futuristic research on RCM. On-road behavior analysis is a crucial and challenging problem in the autonomous driving vision-based area. Several endeavors have been proposed to deal with different related tasks and it has gained wide attention recently. Much of the excitement about on-road behavior understanding has been the labor of advancement witnessed in the fields of computer vision, machine, and deep learning. Remarkable achievements have been made in the Road Behavior Understanding area over the last years. This paper reviews 100+ papers of on-road behavior analysis related work in the light of the milestones achieved, spanning over the last 2 decades. This review paper provides the first attempt to draw smart mobility researchers' attention to the road behavior understanding field and its potential impact on road safety to the whole road agents such as: drivers, pedestrians, stuffs, etc. To push for an holistic understanding, we investigate the complementary relationships between different elementary tasks that we define as the main components of road behavior understanding to achieve a comprehensive understanding of approaches and techniques. For this, five related topics have been covered in this review, including situational awareness, driver-road interaction, road scene understanding, trajectories forecast, driving activities, and status analysis. This paper also reviews the contribution of deep learning approaches and makes an in-depth analysis of recent benchmarks as well, with a specific taxonomy that can help stakeholders in selecting their best-fit architecture. We also finally provide a comprehensive discussion leading us to identify novel research directions some of which have been implemented and validated in our current smart mobility research work. Gaze estimation is an established research problem in computer vision. It has various applications in real life, from human–computer interactions to health care and virtual reality, making it more viable for the research community. Due to the significant success of deep learning techniques in other computer vision tasks—for example, image classification, object detection, object segmentation, and object tracking—deep learning-based gaze estimation has also received more attention in recent years. This paper uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) for person-specific gaze estimation. The person-specific gaze estimation utilizes a single model trained for one individual user, contrary to the commonly-used generalized models trained on multiple people's data. We utilized only low-quality images directly collected from a standard desktop webcam, so our method can be applied to any computer system equipped with such a camera without additional hardware requirements. First, we used the web camera to collect a dataset of face and eye images. Then, we tested different combinations of CNN parameters, including the learning and dropout rates. Our findings show that building a person-specific eye-tracking model produces better results with a selection of good hyperparameters when compared to universal models that are trained on multiple users' data. In particular, we achieved the best results for the left eye with 38.20 MAE (Mean Absolute Error) in pixels, the right eye with 36.01 MAE, both eyes combined with 51.18 MAE, and the whole face with 30.09 MAE, which is equivalent to approximately 1.45 degrees for the left eye, 1.37 degrees for the right eye, 1.98 degrees for both eyes combined, and 1.14 degrees for full-face images. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and the IoT (Internet of Things) is a primary focus of applied engineering research to improve agricultural efficiency. This review paper summarizes the engagement of artificial intelligence models and IoT techniques in detecting, classifying, and counting cotton insect pests and corresponding beneficial insects. The effectiveness and limitations of AI and IoT techniques in various cotton agricultural settings were comprehensively reviewed. This review indicates that insects can be detected with an accuracy of between 70 and 98% using camera/microphone sensors and enhanced deep learning algorithms. However, despite the numerous pests and beneficial insects, only a few species were targeted for detection and classification by AI and IoT systems. Not surprisingly, due to the challenges of identifying immature and predatory insects, few studies have designed systems to detect and characterize them. The location of the insects, sufficient data size, concentrated insects on the image, and similarity in species appearance are major obstacles when implementing AI. Similarly, IoT is constrained by a lack of effective field distance between sensors when targeting insects according to their estimated population size. The construction industry is increasingly adopting off-site and modular construction methods due to the advantages offered in terms of safety, quality, and productivity for construction projects. Despite the advantages promised by this method of construction, modular construction factories still rely on manually-intensive work, which can lead to highly variable cycle times. As a result, these factories experience bottlenecks in production that can reduce productivity and cause delays to modular integrated construction projects. To remedy this effect, computer vision-based methods have been proposed to monitor the progress of work in modular construction factories. However, these methods fail to account for changes in the appearance of the modular units during production, they are difficult to adapt to other stations and factories, and they require a significant amount of annotation effort. Due to these drawbacks, this paper proposes a computer vision-based progress monitoring method that is easy to adapt to different stations and factories and relies only on two image annotations per station. In doing so, the Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) method is used to identify the presence of modular units at workstations, and the Mask R-CNN deep learning-based method is used to identify active workstations. This information was synthesized using a near real-time data-driven bottleneck identification method suited for assembly lines in modular construction factories. This framework was successfully validated using 420 h of surveillance videos of a production line in a modular construction factory in the U.S., providing 96% accuracy in identifying the occupancy of the workstations and an F-1 Score of 89% in identifying the state of each station on the production line. The extracted active and inactive durations were successfully used via a data-driven bottleneck detection method to detect bottleneck stations inside a modular construction factory. The implementation of this method in factories can lead to continuous and comprehensive monitoring of the production line and prevent delays by timely identification of bottlenecks.
