Power control is becoming increasingly essential for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond systems. An example use-case, among others, is the unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) communications where the nearly line-of-sight (LoS) radio channels may result in very low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). The authors in (Chiang et al., 2007) proposed to efficiently and reliably solve this kind of non-convex problem via a series of geometrical programmings (GPs) using condensation approximation. However, it is only applicable for a small-scale network with several communication pairs and practically infeasible with more (e.g., tens of) nodes to be jointly optimized. We therefore in this paper aim to provide new insights into this problem. By properly introducing auxiliary variables, the problem is transformed to an equivalent form which is simpler and more intuitive for condensation. A novel condensation method with linear complexity is also proposed based on the form. The enhancements make the GP-based power control feasible for both small- and especially large-scale networks that are common in 5G and beyond. The algorithm is verified via simulations. The distributed power control algorithms available in this paper assume perfect estimation of interference power at the receivers and often, the availability of perfect local channel state information (CSI). However, perfect estimation of interference power or acquisition of channel information is impractical. In this paper, we consider a generic class of distributed power control algorithms and analyze the resulting performance loss when faced with errors in CSI and/or interference level estimation. We approximate such power control algorithms with linearized state space dynamics wherein the errors in the estimation of received interference or the CSI, can be modeled as additive observation noise. Based on the proposed model, we derive lower bounds on the norm of the errors in the transmit power vector and receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) vector. Our analysis suggests that when the target SINR vector approaches the Pareto-optimal bound, the errors in the transmit vectors could grow without bound. As a consequence, to maintain a performance loss within an acceptable range, either much longer estimation times or lower target SINRs are required. In the heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the downlink-uplink decoupled (DUDE) user association is a very promising technology that can employ different association strategies for uplink and downlink. The DUDE mode has great potential for improving system capacity and frequency efficiency. However, interference between the DUDE user equipment (DUDE UE), macro user equipment (MUE) and small user equipment (SUE) still needs to be considered and properly tackled. Therefore, this paper presents an optimization scheme of frequency allocation and power control to improve the communication quality of users. Firstly, the multiple region frequency allocation (MRFA) scheme is proposed for non-uniform user distribution to alleviate interference among users and allocate spectrum resources equally to dense users. This scheme is modelled as a sub-region partition problem with maximum sum rate, which can disperse densely distributed users to different sub-bands for transmission. Secondly, the convergent power control (CPC) algorithm is considered to improve the transmission performance of each user. It can converge the transmit power to the optimal transmit power for reducing interference among co-channel users when there is no disturbance in the network. The CPC algorithm can also make the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) of each active user always greater than the target threshold until the end of communication by dynamically adjusting the transmit power of users. Simulation results show that the joint scheme of MRFA and CPC achieves a higher system throughput and better user performance than existing frequency allocation schemes or power control schemes. This paper considers the jointly optimal pilot and data power allocation in single-cell uplink massive multiple-input-multiple-output systems. Using the spectral efficiency (SE) as performance metric and setting a total energy budget per coherence interval, the power control is formulated as optimization problems for two different objective functions: the weighted minimum SE among the users and the weighted sum SE. A closed form solution for the optimal length of the pilot sequence is derived. The optimal power control policy for the former problem is found by solving a simple equation with a single variable. Utilizing the special structure arising from imperfect channel estimation, a convex reformulation is found to solve the latter problem to global optimality in polynomial time. The gain of the optimal joint power control is theoretically justified, and is proved to be large in the low-SNR regime. Simulation results also show the advantage of optimizing the power control over both pilot and data power, as compared to the cases of using full power and of only optimizing the data powers as done in previous work. In an interference limited network, joint power and admission control (JPAC) aims at supporting a maximum number of links at their specified signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) targets while using minimum total transmission power. Various convex approximation deflation approaches have been developed for the JPAC problem. In this paper, we propose an effective polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for solving the problem. The approach is based on the non-convex \ell q~(0< q< 1) approximation of an equivalent sparse \ell 0 reformulation of the JPAC problem. We show that, for any instance of the JPAC problem, there exists a \bar q\in (0,1) such that it can be exactly solved by solving its \ell q approximation problem with any q\in (0, \bar q]. We also show that finding the global solution of the \ell q approximation problem is NP-hard. Then, we propose a potential reduction interior-point algorithm, which can return an \epsilon -KKT solution of the NP-hard \ell q approximation problem in polynomial time. The returned solution can be used to check the simultaneous supportability of all links in the network and to guide an iterative link removal procedure, resulting in the polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for the JPAC problem. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing convex approximation approaches in terms of the number of supported links and the total transmission power, particularly exhibiting a quite good performance in selecting which subset of links to support. How to associate a femto user (FU) to an appropriate femto base station (FBS) to avoid interference and maximize the achievable data rate (ADR) of FUs has attracted a lot of attention in femtocell networks. The evidence provided in this paper proves it to be an NP-complete problem. To maximize the ADR of the FUs, the methods for assigning FUs to neighboring FBSs are examined to determine the required transmit power level (TPL) adjustments for the FBSs to mitigate the downlink (DL) interference among the FBSs and the macro base station (MBS). Traditionally, the linear programming (LP) approach is adopted to obtain the optimal solution for this problem. However, the LP approach requires substantially more time to obtain the solution. To lessen this drawback, we propose an easy but smarter scheme, i.e., the smart FBS selection algorithm (SFSA), to distribute FUs to the noninterfered FBSs and to obtain the maximal ADR for each FU. If the SFSA fails to solve this problem, a DL power-control algorithm (DPCA) is employed to find a solution that causes the least amount of interference. The simulation results show that the SFSA and DPCA require only a minor amount of computation time to obtain a feasible solution. In this paper we consider orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive radio systems that operate as secondary users (SUs) in a spectrum overlay approach and study joint spectral shaping and power control subject to specified target signal-to-interference+noise ratio (SINR) as a constrained optimization problem. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal solution of this problem where the spectrum overlay constraints are satisfied and the specified target SINR value is achieved with minimum transmit power. We also present an algorithm that incrementally adapts the OFDM transmitter to reach the optimal solution and study the convergence speed of the proposed algorithm through simulations. Based on the analysis of the feature of cognitive radio (CR) networks, we build a relevant interference model. Cognitive users should particularly consider the problem of interference with licensed users and satisfy the signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement at the same time. We propose a new iterative algorithm using the game theory in this paper. We consider not only the SINR requirement as other game algorithms but also the influence of power threshold. The variable power limit is the characteristic of CR. We prove the convergence of the algorithm and the existence of Nash equilibrium. According to different power thresholds, we give an approach for solving the problem of coexistence between licensed user and cognitive user in a cognitive system. The algorithm has the advantage that it can be distributively implemented, and the method converges relatively fast. In wireless communication systems with multiple users, the near–far effect and the cochannel interferences decrease the spectral efficiency and system performance. An efficient known method to combat these destructive effects is to properly adjust the transmit powers. A practical and efficient way for power control (PC) in cellular communication systems is the autonomous distributed PC (DPC). In this method, the transmit power of each link is independently modified based on the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) reported from the other side of that link. It is known that in a perfect scenario where the reported SINRs are exact, this algorithm converges to the optimum transmit powers. However, in the case of erroneous SINR reports, the transmit powers deviate from their optimum values. This paper addresses the destructive effect of inaccurate SINR reports on the performance of a DPC algorithm. Then, independent variable step-sizes that update the transmit powers are proposed, and convergence of the proposed DPC algorithm to the optimum solution of the original problem is analytically shown. Additionally, a protocol to adaptively tune the step-sizes in our algorithm, which improves the performance of PC in the presence of inaccurate SINR reports, is proposed. We analyze the sum rate performance in multicell single-hop networks where access points are allowed to cooperate in terms of a joint resource allocation. The resource allocation policies considered here combine power control and user scheduling. Although promising from a conceptual point of view, the optimization of the sum of per-link rates hinges on tough issues such as computational complexity and the requirement for heavy receiver-to-transmitter and cell-to-cell channel information feedback. In this paper, however, we show that simple distributed algorithms can scale optimally in terms of rates, when the number of users per cell U is allowed to grow large. We use extreme value theory to provide scaling laws for upper and lower bounds for the network sum-rate (sum of single user rates over all cells), corresponding to zero-interference and worst-case interference scenarios. We show that the scaling is either dominated by path loss statistics or by small-scale fading, depending on the regime and user location scenario. A surprising result is that the well known \log \log U rate behavior exhibited in i.i.d. fading channels with maximum rate schedulers is transformed into a \log U behavior when path loss is accounted for. Additionally, by showing that upper and lower rate bounds behave in fact identically, asymptotically, our results suggest, remarkably, that the impact of multicell interference on the rate (in terms of scaling) actually vanishes asymptotically, when appropriate resource allocation policies are used.
