This paper describes a new approach for a course and laboratory designed to allow students to develop low-cost prototypes of robotic and other embedded devices that feature Internet connectivity, I/O, networking, a real-time operating system (RTOS), and object-oriented C/C++. The application programming interface (API) libraries provided permit students to work at a higher level of abstraction. A low-cost 32-bit SOC RISC microcontroller module with flash memory, numerous I/O interfaces, and on-chip networking hardware is used to build prototypes. A cloud-based C/C++ compiler is used for software development. All student files are stored on a server, and any Web browser can be used for software development. Breadboards are used in laboratory projects to rapidly build prototypes of robots and embedded devices using the microcontroller, networking, and other I/O subsystems on small breakout boards. The commercial breakout boards used provide a large assortment of modern sensors, drivers, display ICs, and external I/O connectors. The purpose of this paper is to examine information seeking pattern of science and art research scholars and for this the data was gathered using questionnaire survey of 139 (one hundred and thirty-nine) randomly selected, PhD scholars of science and arts departments of Asia's largest residential university Banaras Hindu University, India. It has been found that both the groups of researchers have some similarities and some dissimilarity in information seeking. June 2012 saw publication of the Finch report into expanding access to published research findings, the UK Government's response to the report and the issuing of a revised policy on open access publication of research papers by the UK Research Councils. All appear to be driving the UK towards the world's most rigorous adoption of open access publication of publicly funded research outputs. This article looks at the potentially profound consequences of these steps for publishers, librarians and researchers in the UK, and for scholarly communications in general, not least for the centuries-old model of peer review. In this paper, we propose a discussion on e-books as a marked product, not just as a discursive framework or because its format, but also by an editorial process at least partially distinct from the printed book. Moreover, the concepts of material formats and reading practices help to deal with aspects of reading modes that are in evidence when books and e-books are referred. Devices for reading and reader's experience seem to have a key role in proposing a process for publishing electronic books. It is argued here that, since the editorial processes of the printed book and eBook are partly differentiated, besides offering different size and experience, the book could be considered simply as a metaphor of the new editorial product produced to be read in new devices. If the entered text genres are the same, the objects are not, and thus it can be said that those genres that are published in a book not necessarily characterize it, but other elements of its characterization. This paper discusses the field of tension that has arisen from the emergence of a digital culture in public schools that participate in digital inclusion projects. Based on the theoretical and epistemological assumptions of cognitive ecologies and structural coupling, we discuss the production of meanings about the virtual-digital as a necessary path for the opening of new possibilities regarding the use of digital technologies in education. We performed an exploratory workshop with teachers of a statewide network of public education, involving local cartography supported by digital technologies, locative media and mixed reality. The workshop was designed to lead participants to an informational and aesthetic experience for the production of meanings about the virtual-digital on the basis of a dual - technological and symbolical - appropriation using technologies such as QRCode markers, digital media, geolocation and publishing in a blog. The teachers showed an understanding of the virtual-digital as a technology that can expand physical experience, the experience of time and protagonism among teachers and students. We conclude by discussing the "being part of" a digital culture on the basis of the demand for a reconfiguration of pedagogical practices and their cognitive regimes, regimes of authority and the very notion of sociability in relation to the educational process. Book digitization is having a significant impact at all economic, business and legal levels. Concepts that had prevailed since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago have to be changed. With self-publishing, authors do not need publishers, and some indie (independent) are getting an enthusiastic public reception, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. For their part, publishers, who traditionally had been confined to one language and one territory, can easily reach a global scale with the advent of the e-book. Large multinational companies like Amazon and Apple have already landed in Europe, and soon they will arrive in the rest of the world. This paper reports on a study - overseen by representatives of the publishing, library, and research funder communities in the UK - investigating the drivers, costs, and benefits of potential ways to increase access to scholarly journals. It identifies five different but realistic scenarios for moving towards that end over the next five years, including gold and green open access, moves towards national licensing, publisher-led delayed open access, and transactional models. It then compares and evaluates the benefits as well as the costs and risks for the UK. The scenarios, and the modelling on which they are based, amount to a benefit-cost analysis to help in appraising policy options. Our conclusion is that policymakers should encourage the use of existing subject and institutional repositories, but avoid pushing for reductions in embargo periods, which might put at risk the sustainability of the underlying scholarly publishing system. They should also promote and facilitate a transition to gold open access, while seeking to ensure that the average level of publication fees does not exceed c.?2.000; that the rate in the UK of open access publication is broadly in step with the rest of the world; and that total payments to publishers from UK universities do not rise as a consequence. The Editech 2011 conference identified that publishers need to follow new paths and experiment more rapidly in all the areas of business related to a growing number of new digital publishing activities. This paper provides the results of a two-year investigation into the use of e-journals by the UK research community. Log analysis, questionnaires, interviews, and observation were used to collect the information. The results are presented in a FAQ format to make the key findings accessible. The main findings are that journals have become central to most disciplines, and that the e-form has become the prime means of access. The results for history suggest that the old scholarly communication mantras (scientists primarily communicate through articles, historians through monographs) are rapidly breaking down. Indeed, all researchers seem addicted to journal content. Research without this resource now seems unthinkable; journals are a researcher's lifeblood. This paper explores the topic of electronic books (e-books) and the effect that these digital devices and other new technologies has on the publishing industry. Contemporary society often claims that the publishing industry is dying and that the innovation of the e-book will eventually sentence the printed book to death. But this study will show that such is not the case. While it is true that the world is undergoing a digital revolution, publishers today have not been left in the dust, because these firms have embraced electronic publishing (e-publishing). The invention of e-books opens a world of opportunities and since the e-book market is still in its growth stage, there is much work left to be done. As with any new venture, the industry faces certain challenges, such as piracy, but with tools like encryption, digital asset management (DAM), digital rights management (DRM), and digital object identifiers (DOI), publishers are well on the way to a solution. While it is safe to say that the digital revolution has forever changed the face of publishing, e-books could actually revitalize the industry. No one knows what the future of e-publishing will hold, but developments affect publishing houses, authors, and consumers alike. Embarking on a universitywide journal-hosting initiative can be a resource- intensive undertaking. Stand-alone paper copies of journals have occupied academic library shelves largely unchanged for hundreds of years. Despite the prevalence of perverse incentives and market imperfections acknowledged in the business model for journals, the industry was characterized by durable relationships and institutions. Digitization and the internet revolution have transformed the landscape, giving rise to new institutional models and possibilities to challenge existing market inefficiencies in competition and distribution. However, digital information goods themselves guarantee neither appropriate incentives nor social efficiency. This article considers the collision of the new digital economy with an established, imperfect market for journals. Publishing and knowledge production in academia can be significantly improved if aspects of cooperative models developed in software and networking communities are adopted. The Open Access movement focuses on the openness of the final result. The most important attributes of the development of the Internet, the Web and their communication-cooperation tools is the openness of the entire process of production. The novelty that can take many forms is in the organizational structures, decision-making and cooperation. This paper argues that journals adopting a form of Open Process could benefit by increased quality of submissions and publications, faster and more responsive pace of research and by attracting more risk taking and innovative authors. Through open-process publishing and peer reviewing clearer structure and visibility of tasks could be achieved. Equally important could be the possible internal benefits for journal management: the recognition of the most important workers and decision making in their hands, easier and improved project management, attracting new volunteers and reducing the impact of counter-productive participants. If these changes were implemented well, such open-process journals would gain readership and reputation. A simple transition model is suggested: how to start with an email list and proper cultural safeguards. A knowledge economy has been defined as one in which the generation and exploitation of knowledge has come to play the predominant part in the creation of wealth. It is not simply about pushing back the frontiers of knowledge; it is also about the more effective use and exploitation of all types of knowledge in all manner of economic activities. One key question is whether there are new opportunities and new models for scholarly publishing that might better serve researchers and more effectively communicate and disseminate research findings. Building on previous work, this paper looks at the costs and potential benefits of alternative models for scientific and scholarly publishing, describing the approach and methods used and summarising the findings of a study undertaken for JISC in the United Kingdom. It concludes that different publishing models can make a material difference to the costs faced by and benefits realised from research communication, and it seems likely that more open access would have substantial net benefits. This paper presents the results of a quantitative study exploring the online usage of the electronic book collection at the J.N. Desmarais Library at Laurentian University, Canada. In 2009, e-book usage statistics were evaluated to provide a better understanding of how the e-book collection has been utilized. Both current electronic book usage data and data from previous years are reported in order to present and understand general patterns in how the electronic book collection is, and has been utilized. The number of e-books, the number of viewings and the number of searches were examined. The size of the collection grew from a single book in 2002 to more than 60,000 in 2008. The pattern of purchase varied from that of bulk purchasing of large e-book collections, to selective purchasing between 2005 and 2007, and then back to bulk purchasing in 2008. Both viewings and searches have increased from year to year at a greater pace than the size of the e-book collection. The number of searches also appeared to provide a viable means of measuring the use of an e-book collection rather than relying entirely on viewings or downloads. Ratios were calculated to compare viewings and searches to the size of the collection. The highest viewings per ebook and searches per e-book ratios were observed in those years when purchasing was done more selectively. It is also clear that the electronic reference collection has seen far greater use than the electronic monographs. It is now widely accepted that there are two routes to open access (OA): OA repositories and OA journals. It is often assumed these are distinct alternative parallel tracks. However, it has recently become clear that there is potential for repositories and journals to interact with each other on an ongoing basis and between them to form a coherent OA scholarly communication system. This paper puts forward three possible models of interaction between repositories and journals; services such as arXiv and PubMed Central, and the work carried out by the RIOJA project, are working exemplars and pilot implementations of these models. The key issues associated with the widespread adoption of these models include repository infrastructure development; changing ideas of the 'journal', 'article', and 'publication'; version management; quality assurance; business and funding models; developing value-added features; content preservation; policy frameworks; and changing roles and cultures within the research community. The Mark Twain Project Online (MTPO) was launched in October 2007 and, in this first phase, digitally published several thousand of Twain's letters, almost 100 facsimiles of original documents, and over 28,000 records of other correspondence. The partners involved in the building of MTPO – the Mark Twain Papers, the California Digital Library, and University of California Press – created the site on the premise that Web-accessible versions of this content, enhanced by innovative design and site architecture and a suite of research tools, would greatly improve scholars' ability to discover and work with this unique material. Anecdotal feedback supports this premise. Early data analysis confirms the usefulness of facsimiles and browsing functionality. Users tend to prefer simple keyword over complex searches; however, those conducting advanced searches are using the tool flexibly, as we had hoped. This interpretive study of change in Australian book publishing, included a survey of book publishers and the conduct of 14 case studies in five categories of publisher: general trade, academic, professional, specialist and university. This paper reports in detail on the experience on one general trade publisher as it sought to face the challenges of globalization and of organizational and technological change. The major finding was that digitization is indeed, impacting on business models for book publishing, with current models comprising something of a hybrid between the traditional and the innovative. Reflecting the presence in Australia of similar trends and issues that are affecting book publishing around the world, the findings are of relevance both to book publishers and to researchers. The work is original in that relatively little recent academic research has been conducted into book publishing in Australia, particularly as regards the implications of digitization for business models. Early studies of electronic journals (e-journals) viewed the web as a technological discontinuity that would deem traditional academic publishing null This article uses the industry life cycle framework as a lens to examine the formation of academic e-journals. The article proposes five factors affecting the academic publishing dominant design selection process, and examines these factors against six longitudinal case studies. The study concludes that from technical/functional, economic and market perspectives, e-journals are superior to paper journals (p journals) However academic social norms and the managerial processes needed to establish and maintain e-journals are more influential on their formation than the capabilities provided by the new technology. In addition, the long-term sustainability and survivability of e-journals depend on the administrative and managerial processes established by its management team. This study demonstrates that although the web enables a large number of new entrants and a variety of business and technical models, e-journals are a competency-enhancing innovation that relies on the existing expertise of professional publishers and the journal's ability to support the social and cultural needs of academia. Data are becoming an essential product of scholarship, complementing the roles of journal articles, papers, and books. Research data can be reused to ask new questions, to replicate studies, and to verify research findings. Data become even more valuable when linked to publications and other related resources to form a value chain. Types and uses of data vary widely between disciplines, as do the online availability of publications and the incentives of scholars to publish their data. Publishers, scholars, and librarians each have roles to play in constructing a new scholarly information infrastructure for e-research. Technical, policy, and institutional components are maturing; the next steps are to integrate them into a coherent whole. Achieving a critical mass of datasets in public repositories, with links to and from publisher databases, is the most promising solution to maintaining and sustaining the scholarly record in digital form. University presses were founded in the late 19th century to help alleviate a problem of market failure, namely insufficient demand in the commercial marketplace to sustain a publishing operation on the basis of sales alone. Now, in the face of claims about another type of market failure - insufficient funds to sustain library subscriptions to STM journals - calls have come forth to change the economic model of publishing from sales-based to grants-based, offering the fruits of knowledge free to all users with an Internet connection. This paper presents a case study in the development of an online journal finding aid at the University of Illinois at Urbana—Champaign (UIUC), with particular emphasis on cataloging issues. Although not consciously designed according to Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) principles, the Online Research Resources (ORR) system has proved amenable to FRBR analysis. The FRBR model was helpful in examining the user tasks to be served by the system, the appropriate data structure for the system, and the feasibility of mapping the required data from existing sources. The application of the FRBR model to serial publications, however, raises important questions for the model itself, particularly concerning the treatment of work-to-work relationships. Purpose: This paper reports on the development of a tool for searching the contents of licensed full-text electronic book (e-book) collections. Setting: The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) provides services to the University of Pittsburgh's medical programs and large academic health system. Brief Description: The HSLS has developed an innovative tool for federated searching of its e-book collections. Built using the XML-based Vivisimo development environment, the tool enables a user to perform a full-text search of over 2,500 titles from the library's seven most highly used e-book collections. From a single "Google-style" query, results are returned as an integrated set of links pointing directly to relevant sections of the full text. Results are also grouped into categories that enable more precise retrieval without reformulation of the search. Results/Evaluation: A heuristic evaluation demonstrated the usability of the tool and a web server log analysis indicated an acceptable level of usage. Based on its success, there are plans to increase the number of online book collections searched. Conclusion: This library's first foray into federated searching has produced an effective tool for searching across large collections of full-text e-books and has provided a good foundation for the development of other library-based federated searching products. In the five years since the launch of the Budapest Open Access Initiative in February 2002, one of the most striking developments in the scholarly communications landscape has been the increasing interest taken in open access at a policy level. Today, open access (in the form of both self-archiving and open access journals) is routinely discussed and debated at an institutional-level, within research-funding bodies, nationally, and internationally. The debate has moved out of the library and publisher communities to take a more central place in discussions on the 'knowledge economy', return on investment in research, and the nature of e-science. This study examines the users of electronic journals published in a hosting system catted EJUM (Electronic Journal of the University of Malaya) and their perceived satisfaction with the electronic journals as well as their preferred features in electronic journals and problems they face when using the electronic journals. The Malaysian Journal of Computer Science (MJCS), Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science (MJCS) and Journal of Problem Based Learning (JPBL) are being hosted by EJUM. These three electronic journals constitute 3 out of an estimated 17 electronic journals published in Malaysia. Users seem to use the electronic journals to mainly support research and teaching needs. About 50% of respondents rated the journals as "good ", 20.6% rated "fair". Respondents seem to find out about the journals mainly serendipitously as they were browsing the Internet or "found out from a conference paper" or "saw information about it in an article ". Keywords (28.9%) and title (24.3%) searches were chosen by a third of respondents respectively. The majority of respondents (70%) indicated preferring retrieving articles in PDF or HTML About 41.8% of respondents access the electronic journals while making searches on Google or Yahoo. The next most selected option was "from specific journal hosting system" (21.8%), followed by "from my library web portal" and "from citation links found in another resource ". Most respondents scan the abstracts first to check relevance and then download the articles. Most respondents believed that electronic journals will co-exist with print journals (46.2%). The rest believed that electronic journals will replace the print journals (25.5%) or will supplement (25.5%). The list of functions and features preferred by electronic journal is provided. In this paper, we study the problem of video transcoding from MPEG-2 to Windows Media Video (WMV) format, together with several desired functionalities such as bit-rate reduction and spatial resolution downscaling. Based on in-depth analysis of error propagation behavior, we propose two architectures (for different typical application scenarios) that are unique in their complexity scalability and adaptive drifting error control, which in return provide a mechanism to achieve a desired tradeoff between complexity and quality. We perform extensive experiments for various design targets such as complexity, scalability, performance tradeoff, and drifting control effect. The proposed transcoding architectures can be straightforwardly applied to the MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transcoding applications due to the significant overlap between the MPEG-4 and WMV coding technology. This article provides information about electronic journals (e-journals), their subscribers, management issues and necessities from the Bangladesh perspective. An attempt has been made to explore the infrastructural facilities and the existing problems of libraries and information centres that are subscribing to e-journals. The study also discusses the status of e-journal usage and accessibility in selected libraries and information centres, as well as advantages, limitations and prospects for e-journals in the context of this country. Finally the paper suggests that there is a need to establish a workable and sustainable consortium among libraries and information institutions in Bangladesh: It also recommends that systematic efforts should be made urgently for the proper organisation and management of e-journals. Electronic transmission of text is a revolution in progress with a profound effect on engineering education. As with all revolutions, the result is both a threat and a promise. The promise is the ease and speed of dissemination of text. The threat involves serious difficulties that arise in efforts to protect the intellectual property rights of the authors and publishers of the technical information. In this paper, we discuss both the threat and the promise. We highlight the differences in dealing with books and with journals. Five factors are shaping the STM publishing industry: the shift from a supply-driven to a user-driven industry; conversion of paper-based products to an all electronic environment; commoditization of online publishing technology; consolidation; and saturation of the traditional buyer market. This paper examines changing research practices in the digital environment. A review of the literature and our own field research in Australia suggest that there is a new mode of knowledge production emerging, changing research practices and bringing new information access and dissemination needs. Computer Graphics (CG) as a discipline has undergone drastic modifications over the past decades. Indeed the phenomenal progress in both the technical and digital art domains requires educators to master new content and achieve deeper understandings of computers and imagery if they are to keep up with the pace of change. Moreover, as the core field matures, educators in all areas experience a greater need for high-quality curricular resources. Thus, offering excellent educational materials online is an important service to the community. Such support will empower both young and seasoned educators alike to benefit from and contribute to the work of others.The purpose of the work described here is to provide tools to foster such a community of CG educators. We present a system that will allow for original work to be appraised, assessed and made available to others through an online source for refereed educational content in CG. Papers on the cataloging of electronic resources have focused on electronic journals and Internet resources such as Web sites and not on electronic books. Electronic books are nonserial monographic resources accessed with a computer either directly or remotely. Rules and standards for cataloging electronic resources have changed and continue to change. This article discusses the electronic book as a unique manifestation and provides practical instruction on the application of current cataloging rules. The cataloging elements covered are control fields and variable data fields, including classification, uniform titles, title information, edition information, type and extent of the resource, publication and distribution information, physical description, series statements, notes, and subject analysis. INCREASED RELIANCE ON ELECTRONIC RESOURCES requires examination of the roles of librarians in several key ways. This paper addresses the need for further research into three important areas of electronic publishing. How is the change to digital information sources affecting the scholarly work of college and university students? Previous research shows that students rely on Web and online resources and ask for less help from librarians. We do not know, however, how these changes will affect the learning and scholarly work of college and university students. Research is also needed to determine how the differences between separate article and full journal databases affect the way research is done. What are the implications lot scholarship of decisions being made about what publishers publish and what librarians purchase? Finally, are librarians--as intermediaries to the search process--still necessary in a digital age? Between August 2000 and August 2002, the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia distributed over seven million freely-available electronic books to users from more than 100 different countries. Delivered in a variety of formats, including .lit and .pdb, these ebooks have provided proof-of-concept for the adaptive uses of TEI standards beyond the World Wide Web – standards that the Electronic Text Center has employed since its inception in 1992. The first half of this paper discusses the mechanics of ebook production at the Etext Center, the limits of the current technology, and the conversion workflow we hope to implement in the future. The second half discusses user response to our ebook collection, classroom applications of ebook technology, and the advantages and disadvantages that different formats offer to scholars and instructors in the humanities.
