The paper reports that CrossRef now has more than 700 participating publishers and societies and has been adding an average of 9,000 digital opportunity initiative (DOI) per day to its system in 2004. Of the more than 12 million DOI now registered with CrossRef, 850,000-plus are assigned to books and conference proceedings. CrossRef recently began offering discounted registration for components and multiple entries in large reference works. It has also moved to admit other types of original research content such as working papers. Among the organizations that joined CrossRef in recent months are GeoScience World, Social Science Research Network, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.

The article reports that open-access publisher Public Library of Science has launched PLoSONE, a free online journal that accepts submissions from all fields of science and medicine. Submissions are reviewed by an editorial board prior to the publication. Accepted papers posted on the journal's website are accompanied by board members' comments.

The article reports that in print publishing, one cannot physically change what has been set to paper, though the publisher may issue a revision or update. But online publishing, apparently, is a different story. In the past month, the author says that they have witnessed several acts of "unpublishing" by popular web comics creators: Controversial or critical articles that were posted on these Web sites were taken offline-or completely rewritten. The original posts vanished from those sites. It is one thing to correct inaccurate data, but unpublishing controversial material is cowardly. Critics and bloggers who respond to the previously published materials are left to debate in a vacuum, as the original document vanishes without a trace. The deletion of criticism from user forums is misleading and deceptive. Online publishers should be held to the same standards as print publishers, or the value of online content will be significantly diminished.
