This article reports on the plans of publishing companies Wenner Media, Krause Publications and Hearst Magazine to venture into Internet-focused business in 1999. Werner Media plans to launch its Internet-focused title by the end of 1999 while Krause Publications and online site eBay plan to publish eBay Magazine in September 1999. On the other hand, Hearst Magazines is planning a women's guide to the Internet in 2000. The Hearst venture is fueled by its partnership with a woman-focused Internet site.

The article looks at some vendor-hosted and Web-based systems that offer alternatives to traditional newsroom installations. Several vendors today offer software as a service, essentially the same thing as the first Application Service Provider programs. In these environments, little or no software is installed at a newspaper, which not only speeds system conversions and upgrades, but also does away with most of a paper's troubleshooting and maintenance.

The article focuses on the 38th Conference of the Comité Maritime International (CMI) that took place in Vancouver Canada between May 30, 2004 and June 4, 2004. The Legal Committee of the IMO is looking forward to receiving no less than four major reports on topics in its work programme which were debated at Vancouver. The website contains an impressive collection of working papers written in preparation for the Conference, and this will no doubt provide a valuable source of research materials for some time to come. The 2003 CMI Year Book was published just before the Conference and issued to each delegate on arrival.

The article presents a case study of the business challenge facing "The Dallas Morning News." The paper, published by A.H. Belo, had a circulation of 5,000 in 1885. It now covers 65 communities in the Dallas area and created its web counterpart, www.dallasnews.com and neighborsgo.com, a social networking site that focuses on community-generated news. Neighborsgo reportedly received immense positive feedback from news-savvy community members, and it quickly grew, publishing 16 print editions by 2006.

The paper reports that CrossRef now has more than 700 participating publishers and societies and has been adding an average of 9,000 digital opportunity initiative (DOI) per day to its system in 2004. Of the more than 12 million DOI now registered with CrossRef, 850,000-plus are assigned to books and conference proceedings. CrossRef recently began offering discounted registration for components and multiple entries in large reference works. It has also moved to admit other types of original research content such as working papers. Among the organizations that joined CrossRef in recent months are GeoScience World, Social Science Research Network, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.

"The Eagle," the daily paper of Evening Post Publishing Co. in Texas, has launched its newly designed Web site employing the Content Management Platform of MediaSpan. Meanwhile, an eight-unit, 30,000-copy-per-hour singlewide Orient Super press that has increased advertisers' calls for color pages has been installed by Waccamaw Publishers Inc. RBP Chemical Technology Inc. has also introduced its concentrated chemistry package and precision delivery system called Concept 21 5 Star.
