This paper proposed a simulation method for the charge transport in single-layer oil-paper insulation. The method of transient upstream finite-element method (FEM) is derived in order to calculate the time variation of charge densities in medium. The numerical simulation of charge transport in the single-layer oil-paper insulation is realized by applying the transient upstream FEM to the transport equations of bipolar charges. With reasonable microparameter, the charge transport in an experimental object is simulated. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental data. A bent model of oil-paper insulation is analyzed to study the charge distribution under the actual condition. This paper provides an exploratory research to the simulation of charge phenomenon in oil-paper, and has guiding significance to the design of oil-paper insulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations of power networks with switches, techniques such as linear interpolation and Critical Damping Adjustment (CDA) are widely used for improving numerical robustness. This paper analyzes the numerical stability of simulations with these techniques. Firstly, it is mathematically shown that the interpolation or CDA step is equivalent to the introduction of additional switching states. Subsequently, Common Quadratic Lyapunov Function (CQLF) theory is used to investigate the numerical stability of the whole simulation considering these new switching states. It is proved that the widely used strategies like linear interpolation and CDA always result a stable simulation if the original switched system is strictly passive in all switching states. Finally, it is shown that the developed approach can be used to determine the stability of other practical interpolation methods. Examples are provided to verify the proposed technique. In this paper, characteristic model-based modeling and control approaches for complex dynamical networks based on sampled data are studied. It shows that the characteristic model, in which underline network topological structures are simplified, can provide a straightforward and implicit description for network dynamics. The induced parameter estimation method can further make the model adaptive and purely data-driven. Moreover, a control law based on this model is also proposed to govern the network dynamics. In this paper, a complete flux scheme (CFS) has been implemented in 1-D fluid model for simulating the pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in pure argon at atmospheric pressure. The characteristic quantities of the pulsed DBD have been systematically calculated by using the CFS and presented in comparison with those by using the exponential difference scheme (EDS). This paper shows the following results. There is the two-pulse discharge mode in the present simulation. The two discharge currents obtained using the CFS and EDS converge to the same result in good agreement with the experiment as spatial step length decreases, but the CFS has a fast convergence performance compared to the EDS. With a small grid number, the numerical scheme has an evident effect on the characteristic quantities in the time region corresponding to the first discharge pulse. This paper suggests that in the pulsed DBD, the usage of the CFS with a properly small grid number can give more accurate result and also presents a high calculation efficiency. This paper investigates the numerical accuracy of currently employed methods for electromagnetic transient simulation with power electronics. Existing tools often employ the second-order accurate trapezoidal method for numerical integration. However, solution techniques employed to facilitate ideal power-electronic switches do not always preserve this second-order accuracy at switch events. As a result, the step size required to achieve the desired level of accuracy is often smaller than expected, affecting simulation speed. Therefore, this paper aims to assess and improve the tradeoff between step size and accuracy. First, currently employed solution techniques are reviewed by deriving asymptotic estimates of the rates at which approximation errors decrease as the step size reduces. Afterward, a benchmark method is proposed that preserves second-order accuracy at switch events. The tools EMTP-RV and PSCAD are compared with this benchmark method for elementary circuit examples. In the strict sense, the electrodes of the electromagnetic flow sensor (EFS) are nonideal, and the selection of models with different dimensions can result in a relatively large difference in the calculation of the weight function, which further affects the estimation of the output signal. The aim of this paper is to explore the difference in the characteristics of the 2-D and 3-D EFSs with nonideal electrodes. In this paper, the analytical expressions of weight function for both 2-D and 3-D cases are deduced mathematically, and a general weight function methodology based on simulation data and fitting is presented to solve the mixed boundary problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the comparison with the numerical simulation. Meanwhile, the distributions of weight function for 3-D EFSs with different electrodes in cross sections are obtained by means of the method mentioned above, and the difference between the 2-D model and the 3-D model is revealed intuitively. Finally, the output characteristics of the EFS with different dimensions and electrode shapes are calculated by coupling the data of three fields, including the weight field, the flow field, and the magnetic field. Based on the comparison between the experimental data and the calculated values, the direct influence of the dimension and the electrode shape on the output characteristics of the EFS is discussed, and the theoretical analysis is made for the structure design and optimization of the EFS. In this paper, the usage of the Parareal method is proposed for the time-parallel solution of the eddy current problem. The method is adapted to the particular challenges of the problem that are related to the differential algebraic character due to non-conducting regions. It is shown how the necessary modification can be automatically incorporated by using a suitable time-stepping method. Emergency responders are typically notified immediately after a major earthquake strikes. However, a time delay, called the travel time, is usually experienced between the notification and the arrival of the responders on the scene. The reparative work necessary after the responders arrive takes an additional amount of time, called the response time, depending on the nature of the damage and the volume of resources available. In a smart city, the restoration time, which is the sum of the travel and response times, should be minimized. A new discrete-event-based simulation (DEBS) model is presented in this paper to estimate the restoration time needed to bring the situation under control after notifying the response center. The DEBS model not only relaxes restrictive assumptions on travel time made by the Markov chain models from the existing literature, but it can also quantify the impact of resource volumes on restoration times. Additionally, the DEBS model is very useful for training purposes. The DEBS model was employed on a case study from the state of Missouri (U.S.). The experiments demonstrate that numerical results with the model take a short amount of computational time and that it can be implemented on a real-time basis in a smart-city infrastructure. Combined transmission and distribution systems (CoTDS) simulation for power systems requires development of algorithms and software that are numerically stable and at the same time accurately simulate dynamic events that can occur in practical systems. The time scales of simulation can be orders of magnitude apart making the combined simulation extremely challenging. This has led to increased research in applying co-simulation techniques for integrated simulation of the two systems. In this paper, two methods for dynamic co-simulation of CoTDS are proposed using parallel and series computation of the transmission system and distribution systems. The convergence of numerical methods in co-simulation is addressed from a fundamental mathematical perspective and the impact of the integration time-step is studied on proposed CoTDS dynamic co-simulation methods. Both these co-simulation methods are validated against total system simulation in a single time-domain simulation environment. The proposed CoTDS co-simulation method is also validated against commercial EMTP dynamic simulation. CoTDS dynamic co-simulation is further demonstrated on a New England 39-bus transmission system with ten load buses replaced by distribution systems including a 5780-node distribution system on one load bus for a detailed fault-induced delayed voltage recovery simulation study. This paper presents a quasi-static surface-based partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for electromagnetic problems consisting of coupled conductors and heterogeneous dielectrics of finite size. The PEEC model is based on the surface equivalent principle. Unlike the traditional surface-based PEEC models, in which the integral equations are set up by enforcing the field continuity in the true field region, the homogeneous integral equations in this model are obtained by enforcing the tangential null field condition in the null field regions. Simplified integral equations are obtained under the quasi-static assumption, in which the circuit elements carrying electric currents and magnetic charges on the dielectric surfaces are vanished. Consequently, the size of the subcircuit describing dielectrics is reduced significantly compared to the full-wave surface-PEEC (S-PEEC) model. Since the quasi-static S-PEEC model only contains frequency-independent circuit elements, it can be conveniently used for time-domain simulation. Three numerical examples are presented to validate the new PEEC model for typical embedded RF passive components, packaging and interconnection problems in both the frequency domain and the time domain. Ultrasonic guided waves are widely used in industrial nondestructive testing for pipes and plates, where pipe waves and plate waves exhibit similar behaviors for some specific modes. This paper investigates the characteristics of an SH0 mode plate wave converted to a T(0, 1) mode pipe wave based on their similar dispersion and wave structure properties. First, the analytical solution is initially proposed to analyze the characteristics of the SH0-wave propagation in a model of arrayed plates coupled to a pipe. The dispersion curves of the shear horizontal waves are established in a bounded double-layer plate in which the effect of the material and the effect of the thickness ratio of the layers are both considered. An equivalent model of a T-shaped plate wrapped around a pipe is then presented, and the numerical simulation of the SH0-wave propagation in the T-shaped plate is studied. Finally, the validity of the model is verified by experiments in which the periodic permanent magnet (PPM) electromagnet acoustic transducer (EMAT) to generate the SH0-wave, and the arrayed PPM EMAT to detect the T(0, 1)-wave are designed and built. This paper presents a computationally efficient two-dimensional (2-D) steady-state model for fuel cell real-time control implementation. Both the fluid and electrochemical physical domains are considered in the proposed real-time model. The fuel cell under-rib convection is fully described by considering the geometry of serpentine channel. In addition, in order to solve the implicit activation voltage loss and further explore the computational performance, three numerical root-searching algorithms: bisection, secant, and Newton–Raphson methods are applied to the proposed implicit iterative solver and compared. The preferred secant method has been proven to effectively improve both the efficiency and robustness performance of the proposed real-time fuel cell model. Moreover, a computational fluid dynamic based COMSOL fuel cell model is used to validate the calculation accuracy. The proper generalized decomposition (PGD) is a model order reduction method which allows to reduce the computational time of a numerical problem by seeking for a separated representation of the solution. The PGD has been already applied to study an electrical machine but at standstill without accounting the motion of the rotor. In this paper, we propose a method to account for the rotation in the PGD approach in order to build an efficient metamodel of an electrical machine. Then, the machine metamodel will be coupled to its electrical and mechanical environment in order to obtain accurate results with an acceptable computational time on a full simulation. The simulation of electrical discharges has been attracting a great deal of attention. In such simulations, the electric field computation dominates the computational time. In this paper, we propose a fast tree algorithm that helps to reduce the time complexity from O(N^2) (from using direct summation) to $O(N\log N)$ . The implementation details are discussed and the time complexity is analyzed. A rigorous error estimation shows the error of the tree algorithm decays exponentially with the number of truncation terms and can be controlled adaptively. Analog components are fundamental blocks of smart systems, as they allow a tight interaction with the environment, in terms of both sensing/actuation and communication. This impacts on the design of the overall system, and mainly on the validation phase, that thus requires the joint simulation of digital and analog aspects. In this scenario, this paper proposes the automatic conversion of analog models to C++-based languages, to remove the overhead of co-simulation with traditional virtual platform tools. The proposed methodology allows to convert a given analog description to either: 1) a fully equivalent description or 2) an abstract representation for faster simulation which models only the aspects of interest. This paper is concerned with the design of a reduced-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method for electromagnetic simulation. A centered flux approximation for surface integral and a second-order leap-frog scheme for advancing in time are applied in the classical DG method. The POD basis is created by the eigensystem of the correlation matrix, which is generated by the snapshot matrix whose columns are the snapshot vectors extracted from the high-fidelity DG simulation. The POD discontinuous Galerkin time-domain formulation with lower dimension and sufficiently high accuracy is established by applying a Galerkin projection for the semidiscrete DG scheme. The overall goal is to reduce the computational cost while maintaining an acceptable level of accuracy. In this paper, a multiple trench split-gate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) lateral double-diffused MOSFET with a Schottky rectifier (MTS-SG-LDMOS) is proposed and its characteristics are studied using 2-D simulations. The new structure features double oxide trenches, a floating polysilicon split-gate, and a Schottky rectifier. Each oxide trench includes a vertical field plate which enhances the depletion of the drift region and modulates the bulk electric field. As the simulation results, when compared to the conventional SOI LDMOS (C-LDMOS), the breakdown voltage in the MTS-SG-LDMOS increases from 297 to 350 V, the specific on-state resistance ( R \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON,\mathsf {sp}} ) decreases from 142.9 to 48.2 \textm\Omega \cdot \mathsf cm^\mathsf 2 , and the gate–drain charge ( Q {\mathsf {gd}} ) decreases from 19 to 9 pC. Development and type testing of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) disconnectors are supported with the simulation-based analyses of very fast transients (VFTs) that are associated with the disconnector switching operations. In order to analyze local field values in the entire GIS geometry, the full-Maxwell approach needs to be involved for simulating the VFT generation process. According to power substation layout studies, 90 ${}^{\circ }$-angled GIS disconnectors are often used in GIS projects, since they offer most layout options and, at the same time, require the lowest number of GIS components. This implies that the test setups are asymmetric, thus the direct use of the full-Maxwell approach requires 3-D models, the application of which is considered to be highly demanding from a numerical point of view. The paper shows a comparison of the results obtained from full-Maxwell numerical simulations for a development test setup of 1100 kV GIS. The analyses are conducted for full 3-D geometry and for the corresponding 2-D-axisymmetric geometry. Example simulations of the VFT overvoltage (VFTO) waveforms are presented for both geometries, together with a comparison of the numerical effort needed for solving the associated field equations. This paper proposes a new method of decoupling and subdividing electrical circuits, containing power-electronics devices, in order to achieve fast and accurate real-time simulation. In this technique, each state variable can be discretized using different discretization methods. Combining implicit and explicit ODE solvers, state-space equations are decoupled while remaining accurate and stable. Unlike most traditional decoupling techniques previously proposed, the proposed one does not require artificial delay or supplementary states to be added in order to decouple the system. Furthermore, this technique is meant to be implemented with commercially available simulation software. By doing so, a large and complex circuit containing several hundreds of state variables can be easily and accurately simulated with minor modification to the existing models. AC losses in superconductors are generated every time a time-varying current/field is present. Engineers must be able to predict these losses as accurately as possible during the design phase of power applications. The electrodynamics of superconductors can be formulated as a nonlinear eddy current problem in which the resistivity of the superconducting region is a highly nonlinear function of the current density. In 3-D finite-element simulations, it leads to time-consuming simulations and convergence issues. In this paper, we compare two different $E$ – $J$ constitutive equations, namely: 1) power law model and 2) the percolation model (PM), programmed within both the $H$ – $\phi $ and $T$ – $\phi $ formulations. Based on the 3-D case of a three-filament twisted superconducting wire, the numerical performance of all these formulations/material models is compared in terms of accuracy, computation times, number of time steps, and number of Newton iterations for different relaxation methods. It is shown that the combination of the $T$ – $\phi $ formulation and the $E$ – $J$ PM works fine and should be further developed, as it seems to constitute the best modeling option from both a numerical and physical point of view. The need for multidisciplinary virtual prototyping in power electronics has been well established, however, design tools capable of facilitating a rapid iterative virtual design process do not exist. A key challenge in developing such tools is identifying and developing modeling techniques which can account for 3-D geometrical design choices without unduly affecting simulation speed. This challenge has been addressed in this paper using model order reduction techniques and a prototype power electronic design tool incorporating these techniques is presented. A relevant electrothermal power module design example is then used to demonstrate the performance of the software and model order reduction techniques. Five design iterations can be evaluated, using 3-D inductive and thermal models, under typical operating and start-up conditions on a desktop PC in less than 15 min. In this paper, we set up an efficient Fréchet derivative algorithm of inversion of multicomponent induction logging (MCIL) data in horizontal layered transversely isotropic (TI) formations based on transmission line method (TLM) in order to simultaneously reconstruct the model vector including both horizontal and vertical conductivities, horizontal interfaces, borehole dipping angle, and tool azimuth in deviated well from the MCIL data. First, MCIL responses in the TI model are efficiently determined by both the spectrum EM fields obtained by TLM and the semianalytical computation of Sommerfeld integrals based on the cubic spline interpolation. Then, the Born approximations are executed to derive the MCIL Fréchet derivatives as the sixfold integrals of the products of two spectrum EM fields in infinite domains. By using the integral characters of the 2-D Dirac function, the sixfold integrals of Fréchet derivatives are further simplified into twofold integrals: One is the Sommerfeld integral in the radial spectrum domain, and the other is the definite integral in the vertical spatial domain. They are efficiently computed by the semianalytical approach similar to the MCIL simulation. Therefore, we obtain the linear equations between changes in the MCIL responses and small perturbations in the model vector. After that, we iteratively modify all of the model parameters to realize the best fit between the input data and the synthetic data of the inverted model by the normalization of the Fréchet derivative and singular value decomposition technique.
