We consider the problem of communicating over a channel that randomly “tears” the message block into small pieces of different sizes and shuffles them. For the binary torn-paper channel with block length $n$ and pieces of length ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ , we characterize the capacity as $C = e^{-\alpha }$ , where $\alpha = \lim _{n\to \infty } p_{n} \log n$. Our results show that the case of ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ -length fragments and the case of deterministic length- $(1/p_{n})$ fragments are qualitatively different and, surprisingly, the capacity of the former is larger. Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) have received widespread attention due to their high information transmission rate, high accuracy, and rich instruction set. However, the performance of its identification methods strongly depends on the amount of calibration data for within-subject classification. Some studies use deep learning (DL) algorithms for inter-subject classification, which can reduce the calculation process, but there is still much room for improvement in performance compared with intra-subject classification. To solve these problems, an efficient SSVEP signal recognition deep learning network model e-SSVEPNet based on the soft saturation nonlinear module is proposed in this paper. The soft saturation nonlinear module uses a similar exponential calculation method for output when it is less than zero, improving robustness to noise. Under the conditions of the SSVEP data set, two sliding time window lengths (1 s and 0.5 s), and three training data sizes, this paper evaluates the proposed network model and compares it with other traditional and deep learning model baseline methods. The experimental results of the nonlinear module were classified and compared. A large number of experimental results show that the proposed network has the highest average accuracy of intra-subject classification on the SSVEP data set, improves the performance of SSVEP signal classification and recognition, and has higher decoding accuracy under short signals, so it has huge potential ability to realize high-speed SSVEP-based for BCI. This paper presents a new theory and model of the teaching of decoding, reading and writing. The first part of the paper reviews a selection of influential models of learning to read and write that to varying degrees have been used as the basis for approaches to teaching, including the Simple View of Reading. As well as noting some strengths of the models in relation to children's learning, limitations are identified in terms of their applicability as models of teaching. The second part of the paper presents seven components that are central to teaching reading and writing derived from social, cultural and cognitive research and theory. Explanations for the relevance of the components are offered, and seminal and more recent research that underpin them summarised. The final part of the paper introduces a new theory and model of teaching, The Double Helix of Reading and Writing. In this paper, we present a practical method to construct dirty paper coding (DPC) schemes using sum codes. Unlike the commonly used approach to DPC where the coding scheme involves concatenation of a channel code and a quantization code, the proposed method embodies a unified approach that emulates the binning method used in the proof of the DPC result. Auxiliary bits are used to create the desired number of code vectors in each bin. Sum codes are obtained when information sequences augmented with auxiliary bits are encoded using linear block codes. Sum-code-based DPC schemes can be implemented using any linear block code, and entail a relatively small increase in decoder complexity when compared to standard communication schemes. This paper studies the second-order coding rates for memoryless channels with a state sequence known non-causally at the encoder. In the case of finite alphabets, an achievability result is obtained using constant-composition random coding, and by using a small fraction of the block to transmit the empirical distribution of the state sequence. For error probabilities less than 0.5, it is shown that the second-order rate improves on an existing one based on independent and identically distributed random coding. In the Gaussian case (dirty paper coding) with an almost-sure power constraint, an achievability result is obtained using random coding over the surface of a sphere, and using a small fraction of the block to transmit a quantized description of the state power. This paper attempts to highlight the decoding capabilities of MDP convolutional codes over the erasure channel by defining them as discrete linear dynamical systems, with which the controllability property and the observability characteristics of linear system theory can be applied, in particular those of output observability, easily described using matrix language. Those are viewed against the decoding capabilities of MDS block codes over the same channel. Not only is the time complexity better but the decoding capabilities are also increased with this approach because convolutional codes are more flexible in handling variable-length data streams than block codes, where they are fixed-length and less adaptable to varying data lengths without padding or other adjustments. In general, the problem of building optimal convolutional codes under a certain criteria is hard, especially when size field restrictions are applied. In this paper, we confront the challenge of constructing an optimal 2D convolutional code when communicating over an erasure channel. We propose a general construction method for these codes. We propose a successive cancellation list (SCL) encoding and decoding scheme for the Gelfand Pinsker (GP) problem based on the known nested polar coding scheme. It applies SCL encoding for the source coding part, and SCL decoding with a properly defined CRC for the channel coding part. The scheme shows improved performance compared to the existing method. A known issue with nested polar codes for binary dirty paper is the existence of frozen channel code bits that are not frozen in the source code. These bits need to be retransmitted in a second phase of the scheme, thus reducing the rate and increasing the required blocklength. We provide an improved bound on the size of this set, and on its scaling with respect to the blocklength, when the Bhattacharyya parameter of the test channel used for source coding is sufficiently large, or the Bhattacharyya parameter of the channel seen at the decoder is sufficiently small. The result is formulated for an arbitrary binary-input memoryless GP problem, since unlike the previous results, it does not require degradedness of the two channels mentioned above. This paper designs a texture-hidden QR code to prevent the illegal copying of a QR code due to its lack of anti-counterfeiting ability. Combining random texture patterns and a refined QR code, the code is not only capable of regular coding but also has a strong anti-copying capability. Based on the proposed code, a quality assessment algorithm (MAF) and a dual feature detection algorithm (DFDA) are also proposed. The MAF is compared with several current algorithms without reference and achieves a 95% and 96% accuracy for blur type and blur degree, respectively. The DFDA is compared with various texture and corner methods and achieves an accuracy, precision, and recall of up to 100%, and also performs well on attacked datasets with reduction and cut. In its most elementary form, compressed sensing studies the design of decoding algorithms to recover a sufficiently sparse vector or code from a lower dimensional linear measurement vector. Typically it is assumed that the decoder has access to the encoder matrix, which in the combinatorial case is sparse and binary. In this paper we consider the problem of designing a decoder to recover a set of sparse codes from their linear measurements alone, that is without access to encoder matrix. To this end we study the matrix factorisation task of recovering both the encoder and sparse coding matrices from the associated linear measurement matrix. The contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient decoding algorithm, Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation, with strong performance guarantees. Under mild assumptions on the sparse coding matrix and by deploying a novel random encoder matrix, we prove that Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation recovers both the encoder and sparse coding matrix at the optimal measurement rate with high probability and from a near optimal number of measurement vectors. In addition, our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and computational efficiency of our algorithm in practice. A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. This paper presents the overview and rationale behind the Decoder-Side Depth Estimation (DSDE) mode of the MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) standard, using the Geometry Absent profile, for efficient compression of immersive multiview video. A MIV bitstream generated by an encoder operating in the DSDE mode does not include depth maps. It only contains the information required to reconstruct them in the client or in the cloud: decoded views and metadata. The paper explains the technical details and techniques supported by this novel MIV DSDE mode. The description additionally includes the specification on Geometry Assistance Supplemental Enhancement Information which helps to reduce the complexity of depth estimation, when performed in the cloud or at the decoder side. The depth estimation in MIV is a non-normative part of the decoding process, therefore, any method can be used to compute the depth maps. This paper lists a set of requirements for depth estimation, induced by the specific characteristics of the DSDE. The depth estimation reference software, continuously and collaboratively developed with MIV to meet these requirements, is presented in this paper. Several original experimental results are presented. The efficiency of the DSDE is compared to two MIV profiles. The combined non-transmission of depth maps and efficient coding of textures enabled by the DSDE leads to efficient compression and rendering quality improvement compared to the usual encoder-side depth estimation. Background: A significant portion of adults struggle to read at a basic level. Word reading (defined here as decoding and word recognition) appears to play a pivotal role for this population of readers; however, less is known about how word reading relates to other important semantic processes (e.g., vocabulary, sentence processing) known to account for a large portion of variance in reading comprehension. This study used the Reading Systems Framework to explore the extent that moderational and mediational relations existed between word reading and semantic processing abilities in predicting reading comprehension. Methods: Participants (N = 169) completed the Reading Inventory and Scholastic Evaluation, which consists of a series of subtests intended to measure decoding/word recognition, vocabulary, sentence processing and reading comprehension. Results: A moderated mediation model was constructed to assess the extent to which moderational and mediational relations between word reading and semantic processing were predictive of comprehension. Results suggested that word reading moderated the effect of vocabulary knowledge on comprehension among struggling adult readers. Additionally, semantic processing at the word (i.e., vocabulary) and sentence level both significantly mediated the relation between word reading and comprehension. Conclusions: Word reading moderated the relation between vocabulary and comprehension for struggling adult readers. Readers with greater word reading ability benefited most from having a higher degree of vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary and sentence processing mediated the relation between word reading and comprehension. Thus, word reading appears to serve as an important gateway for struggling readers, and, as such, interventions targeting component skills of reading may have a limited impact on reading literacy tasks until word reading skills are developed. This paper introduces a new spike activation function (SPKAF) or spike membership function for fuzzy adaptive neurons (FAN), developed for decoding spatiotemporal information with spikes, optimizing digital signal processing. A solution with the adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) method is proposed and compared with that of the FAN-SPKAF model, obtaining very precise simulation results. Stability analysis of systems models is presented. An application to voice recognition using solfeggio syllables in Spanish is performed experimentally, comparing the methods of FAN-step activation function (STEPAF)-SPKAF, Augmented Spiking Neuron Model, and Augmented FAN-STEPAF-SPKAF, achieving very good results. For fixed integers $n$ and $b\geq k$ , let $A(b,k,n)$ the largest size of a subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,b\}^{n}$ such that, for any $k$ distinct elements in the set, there is a coordinate where they all differ. Bounding $A(b,k,n)$ is a problem of relevant interest in information theory and computer science, relating to the zero-error capacity with list decoding and to the study of $(b, k)$ -hash families of functions. It is known that, for fixed $b$ and $k$ , $A(b,k,n)$ grows exponentially in $n$. In this paper, we determine new exponential upper bounds for different values of $b$ and $k$. A first bound on $A(b,k,n)$ for general $b$ and $k$ was derived by Fredman and Komlós in the ’80s and improved for certain $b\neq k$ by Körner and Marton and by Arikan. Only very recently better bounds were derived for general $b$ and $k$ by Guruswami and Riazanov, while stronger results for small values of $b=k$ were obtained by Arikan, by Dalai, Guruswami and Radhakrishnan, and by Costa and Dalai. In this paper, we strengthen the bounds for some specific values of $b$ and $k$. Our contribution is a new computational method for obtaining upper bounds on the values of a quadratic form defined over discrete probability distributions in arbitrary dimensions, which emerged as a central ingredient in recent works. Recent research advances in salient object detection (SOD) could largely be attributed to ever-stronger multi-scale feature representation empowered by the deep learning technologies. The existing SOD deep models extract multi-scale features via the off-the-shelf encoders and combine them smartly via various delicate decoders. However, the kernel sizes in this commonly-used thread are usually “fixed”. In our new experiments, we have observed that kernels of small size are preferable in scenarios containing tiny salient objects. In contrast, large kernel sizes could perform better for images with large salient objects. Inspired by this observation, we advocate the “dynamic” scale routing (as a brand-new idea) in this paper. It will result in a generic plug-in that could directly fit the existing feature backbone. This paper’s key technical innovations are two-fold. First, instead of using the vanilla convolution with fixed kernel sizes for the encoder design, we propose the dynamic pyramid convolution (DPConv), which dynamically selects the best-suited kernel sizes w.r.t. the given input. Second, we provide a self-adaptive bidirectional decoder design to accommodate the DPConv-based encoder best. The most significant highlight is its capability of routing between feature scales and their dynamic collection, making the inference process scale-aware. We introduce a fundamental lemma called the Poisson matching lemma, and apply it to prove one-shot achievability results for various settings, namely channels with state information at the encoder, lossy source coding with side information at the decoder, joint source-channel coding, broadcast channels, distributed lossy source coding, multiple access channels and channel resolvability. Our one-shot bounds improve upon the best known one-shot bounds in most of the aforementioned settings (except multiple access channels and channel resolvability, where we recover bounds comparable to the best known bounds), with shorter proofs in some settings even when compared to the conventional asymptotic approach using typicality. The Poisson matching lemma replaces both the packing and covering lemmas, greatly simplifying the error analysis. This paper extends the work of Li and El Gamal on Poisson functional representation, which mainly considered variable-length source coding settings, whereas this paper studies fixed-length settings, and is not limited to source coding, showing that the Poisson functional representation is a viable alternative to typicality for most problems in network information theory. Versatile Video Coding (VVC) was finalized in 2020 and offered promising coding efficiency with a bitrate reduction of about 50% for same video quality as High Efficiency Video Coding. However, its high encoding complexity is a heavy burden on real-time applications. In particular, the very high complexity in intra coding can be a big barrier into market entry. This paper presents an efficient low-complexity intra coding scheme, which employs downsampling and upsampling processes. The downsampling is simply performed by reducing the resolution of an original video in both horizontal and vertical directions. In the upsampling, convolutional neural network based super-resolution is used to increase the resolution of the reconstructed video. In addition, this paper thoroughly analyzes the performance and complexity of all intra coding tools in VVC. This paper proposes a new probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) approach for concatenated two-level multi-level coding (MLC). The proposed system is based on a concatenated forward error correction (FEC) scheme where outer codes are serially concatenated with inner two-level MLC. This concatenated two-level MLC scheme has recently been shown to have a potential for achieving better performance-complexity trade-offs than the conventional bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). Meanwhile, PAS has recently been demonstrated to offer remarkable performance gains as well as rate adaptivity. However, the majority of existing works on PAS assume the use of the binary reflected Gray code as a bit-labeling, and its application to coded modulation schemes with other bit-labelings, such as two-level MLC, may not be straightforward. In this paper, we devise a bit-labeling scheme and propose a new PAS structure for an efficient integration of PAS with two-level MLC systems. More specifically, we propose to generate signed amplitude symbols with the distribution matcher (DM) for maximizing both coding and shaping gains achieved by two-level MLC and PAS, respectively, while the conventional PAS generates unsigned amplitude symbols. It is demonstrated by simulation results that, with 256QAM and inner polar codes, the proposed two-level MLC with PAS simultaneously offers 75% reduction in the number of required inner encoding and soft-decision (SD) decoding operations for given outer and inner FEC code lengths, and up to 0.3 dB performance gain over the conventional PAS scheme. In this paper, we propose an optimization method for protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes under window decoding (WD). Previous works on constructing SC-LDPC codes for WD typically focused on optimizing asymptotic performance metrics such as the WD threshold. However, in this paper, it is observed that the WD threshold is not an appropriate metric to sufficiently explain the finite-length behavior of SC-LDPC codes under WD. Thus, we propose a new performance metric, called the window mean parameter, based on a scaling analysis to capture the WD performance more accurately and formulate a code optimization algorithm that optimizes the proposed performance metric. Since the proposed metric depends on the window size, the optimization algorithm can provide a code family of SC-LDPC codes optimized for various target window sizes. Simulation results confirm that the improvement in the proposed metric leads to a finite-length performance improvement, resulting in one to two orders of the frame error rate gain over the conventional SC-LDPC codes for a wide range of window sizes. Furthermore, we investigate structural characteristics of the proposed codes to provide a supplementary explanation for the performance improvement, which also promotes a better understanding of SC-LDPC codes for WD. The Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes are a well-studied subclass of cyclic codes that have found numerous applications in error correction and notably in quantum information processing. They are widely used in data storage and communication systems. A subclass of attractive BCH codes is the narrow-sense BCH codes over the Galois field ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with length $q+1$ , which are closely related to the action of the projective general linear group of degree two on the projective line. Despite its interest, not much is known about this class of BCH codes. This paper aims to study some of the codes within this class and specifically narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes (these codes are also linear complementary duals (LCD) codes that have interesting practical recent applications in cryptography, among other benefits). We shall use tools and combine arguments from algebraic coding theory, combinatorial designs, and group theory (group actions, representation theory of finite groups, etc.) to investigate narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH Codes and extend results from the recent literature. Notably, the dimension, the minimum distance of some $q$ -ary BCH codes with length $q+1$ , and their duals are determined in this paper. The dual codes of the narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes derived in this paper include almost MDS codes. Furthermore, the classification of ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ -invariant codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p^{h})$ is completed. As an application of this result, the $p$ -ranks of all incidence structures invariant under the projective general linear group ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ are determined. Furthermore, infinite families of narrow-sense BCH codes admitting a 3-transitive automorphism group are obtained. Via these BCH codes, a coding-theory approach to constructing the Witt spherical geometry designs is presented. Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (uRLLC) emerges as one of the three service categories in fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks, with a potential to support multiple advanced services for latency-sensitive communications. The inherent openness of the wireless environment makes security in 5G unprecedentedly urgent to be addressed. Accordingly, the physical layer security (PLS) technique exploits the randomness characteristics of the wireless channel to fulfill security and confidentiality of information transmission. Different from many current works, which ignored the significance of security in uRLLC, this paper studies secrecy improvement strategy design in uRLLC scenarios. First, we propose suitable performance metrics for evaluating PLS of uRLLC and make a compromise between reliability, latency, and security, while maximizing the network throughput. Next, we identify the key challenging issues for achieving PLS in the context of uRLLC, and discuss the role of cooperative communication and mobility in terms of possible solutions. This paper uses the reconstruction-computation-quantization (RCQ)paradigm to decode low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. RCQ facilitates dynamic non-uniform quantization to achieve good frame error rate (FER) performance with very low message precision. For message-passing according to a flooding schedule, the RCQ parameters are designed by discrete density evolution. Simulation results on an IEEE 802.11 LDPC code show that for 4-bit messages, a flooding Min Sum RCQ decoder outperforms table-lookup approaches such as information bottleneck (IB) or Min-IB decoding, with significantly fewer parameters to be stored. Additionally, this paper introduces layer-specific RCQ, an extension of RCQ decoding for layered architectures. Layer-specific RCQ uses layer-specific message representations to achieve the best possible FER performance. For layer-specific RCQ, this paper proposes using layered discrete density evolution featuring hierarchical dynamic quantization (HDQ) to design parameters efficiently. Finally, this paper studies field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of RCQ decoders. Simulation results for a (9472, 8192) quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC code show that a layered Min Sum RCQ decoder with 3-bit messages achieves more than a 10% reduction in LUTs and routed nets and more than a 6% decrease in register usage while maintaining comparable decoding performance, compared to a 5-bit offset Min Sum decoder. In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of an uplink (UL) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN), in which two users communicate with the satellite through a decode-and-forward (DF) relay due to the lack of direct link. To provide a comprehensive yet hitherto unexplored outage analysis framework, we consider a more generalized channel model, i.e., the terrestrial and satellite links, respectively, undergo $\alpha -\mu $ and $\kappa -\mu $ shadowed fadings. Under fixed power allocation (FPA) for both multiple access phase and relaying phase, we firstly study three successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding schemes, of which the first two are refined from existing schemes, while the third one, named as extended SIC (ESIC), is proposed in this paper to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) decoding criterion, which is shown to offer better performances for both users as compared to the former two SIC schemes. We also propose a novel dynamic power allocation (DPA) scheme for the multiple access phase, termed as enhanced DPA (EDPA), to overcome both users’ error floor (EF) issue yet provide better user fairness than the conventional DPA in the literature. We then analyze the exact and asymptotic outage performance for three SIC and the EDPA schemes under the generalized channel setting. It is shown that both the proposed ESIC and EDPA can circumvent the EF issue and moreover, each has its own advantage in terms of the diversity order (DO). Our results also reveal that there exists a trade-off between ESIC and EDPA, since the former requires a premise on users’ targets rates to overcome the EF and once this premise is satisfied, no DO degradation will occur, while the latter does not entail such a premise but may face potential DO degradation. Finally, we present numerical results to verify the theoretical analysis, manifest the impacts of key parameters on the system performance, and demonstrate the advantages of our proposed network over other benchmarks. This paper derives the optimal test channel distribution and the complete characterization of the classical Gorbunov and Pinsker (1973), Gorbunov and Pinsker (1974) nonanticipatory epsilon entropy of multivariate Gaussian Markov sources with square-error fidelity, which remained an open problem since 1974. The paper also formulates a state dependent nonanticipatory epsilon entropy, in which past reproductions are available to the decoder and not to the encoder, the test channel is specified with respect to an auxiliary (state) random process, and the reproduction process is a causal function of past reproduction and the auxiliary random process. This variation is analogous to the Wyner and Ziv (1976) and Wyner (1978) rate distortion function (RDF), of memoryless sources. It is shown that the operational rate of zero-delay codes, with past reproductions available to the decoder but not to the encoder is bounded below by the state dependent nonanticipatory epsilon entropy rate. For the case of multivariate Gaussian Markov sources with square-error fidelity, the optimal test channel distribution and the complete characterization of the state dependent of nonanticipatory epsilon entropy are derived, and also shown that that the two nonanticipatory epsilon entropies coincide. The derivations are new; they are based on structural properties of the stochastic realizations of the reproduction process that induce the optimal test channel distributions. They are derived using, achievable lower bounds on information theoretic measures, properties of mean-square estimation theory, Hadamard’s inequality, and canonical correlation coefficients of a tuple of multivariate jointly Gaussian random processes. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are widely used as error correction codes in new generation digital TV standards, such as the second generation of terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-T2), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, etc. The nonlinear belief propagation (BP) algorithm has excellent decoding performance for LDPC codes, but is often simplified in hardware implementations by linear min-sum (MS) algorithm due to its high complexity. This simplification also leads to over-estimation problems, which can be corrected by adding factors in conventional algorithms (e.g., normalized min-sum (NMS), offset min-sum (OMS), and variable scaling normalized min-sum (VMS) algorithms). However, the correction factors of these modified MS algorithms cannot adapt to different channels and modulations, and the performance needs further improvement. In this paper, the concepts of over-estimation value (OEV) and over-estimation rate (OER) are introduced to describe the over-estimation problem of the MS algorithm. Then, under the guidance of OEV and OER, a polygonal line min-sum (PMS) algorithm with correction factors adapted to different channels and modulations is proposed according to LLR distribution. Following the properties of OEV and OER, PMS algorithm is further simplified into Simplified PMS (SPMS) algorithm. LDPC codes from ATSC 3.0 are adopted in this paper to evaluate SPMS algorithm in comparison with the conventional algorithms. Extensive simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm for ATSC 3.0 LDPC decoder has at most 1.61dB, 0.24dB and 0.36dB gain over NMS, OMS and VMS algorithms respectively when frame error rate (FER) is at 10−4 level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with QPSK modulation. More importantly, the simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm can achieve much better performance than these modified MS algorithms over AWGN and Rayleigh channel with higher-order modulations or under limited maximum iteration number. In this paper we review existing hard-decision decoding algorithms for product codes along with different post-processing techniques used in conjunction with the iterative decoder for product codes. We improve the decoder by Reddy and Robinson and use it to create a new post-processing technique. The performance of this new post-processing technique is evaluated through simulations, and these suggest that our new post-processing technique outperforms previously known post-processing techniques which are not tailored for specific codes. The cost of using the new post-processing technique is that the algorithm becomes more complex. However, the post-processing is applied very rarely unless the channel is very noisy, and hence the increase in computational complexity is negligible for most choices of parameters. Finally, we propose a new algorithm that combines existing techniques in a way that avoids the error floor with short relatively high rate codes. With the development of various information and communication technologies, the amount of big data has increased, and distributed file systems have emerged to store them stably. The replication technique divides the original data into blocks and writes them on multiple servers for redundancy and fault tolerance. However, there is a symmetrical space efficiency problem that arises from the need to store blocks larger than the original data. When storing data, the Erasure Coding (EC) technique generates parity blocks through encoding calculations and writes them separately on each server for fault tolerance and data recovery purposes. Even if a specific server fails, original data can still be recovered through decoding calculations using the parity blocks stored on the remaining servers. However, matrices generated during encoding and decoding are redundantly generated during data writing and recovery, which leads to unnecessary overhead in distributed file systems. This paper proposes a cache-based matrix technique that uploads the matrices generated during encoding and decoding to cache memory and reuses them, rather than generating new matrices each time encoding or decoding occurs. The design of the cache memory applies the Weighting Size and Cost Replacement Policy (WSCRP) algorithm to efficiently upload and reuse matrices to cache memory using parameters known as weights and costs. Furthermore, the cache memory table can be managed efficiently because the weight–cost model sorts and updates matrices using specific parameters, which reduces replacement cost. The experiment utilized the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) as the distributed file system, and the EC volume was composed of Reed–Solomon code with parameters (6, 3). As a result of the experiment, it was possible to reduce the write, read, and recovery times associated with encoding and decoding. In particular, for up to three node failures, systems using WSCRP were able to reduce recovery time by about 30 s compared to regular HDFS systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon’s Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. Communication over a random-parameter quantum channel when the decoder is required to reconstruct the parameter sequence is considered. We study scenarios that include either strictly-causal, causal, or non-causal channel side information (CSI) available at the encoder, and also when CSI is not available. This model can be viewed as a form of quantum metrology, and as the quantum counterpart of the classical rate-and-state channel with state estimation at the decoder. Regularized formulas for the capacity-distortion regions are derived. In the special case of measurement channels, single-letter characterizations are derived for the strictly-causal and causal settings. Furthermore, in the more general case of entanglement-breaking channels, a single-letter characterization is derived when CSI is not available. As a consequence, we obtain regularized formulas for the capacity of random-parameter quantum channels with CSI, generalizing previous results by Boche et al., 2016, on classical-quantum channels. Bosonic dirty paper coding is introduced as a consequence, where we demonstrate that the optimal coefficient is not necessarily that of minimum mean-square error estimation as in the classical setting. Distributed Arithmetic Coding (DAC) is a practical realization of Slepian-Wolf coding that partitions source space into cosets. Coset Cardinality Spectrum (CCS) is an important property of DAC that was defined in our previous work. In this paper, we give two applications of CCS. First, we find that DAC bitstream is not compact. The rate loss of DAC bitstream is caused by two factors: unequal coset partitioning and bit indivisibility. It is proved that as code length goes to infinity, the expected value of bit-indivisibility rate loss will tend to 0.5 for any irrational Rate Change Step (RCS), where the RCS refers to the rate change when one source bit is flipped. With the help of CCS, the bit-indivisibility rate loss can be compensated to some extend. Especially, for any irrational RCS, as code length goes to infinity, the expected value of the remaining bit-indivisibility rate loss after compensation will tend to about 0.47. The second application of CCS is DAC decoder design. We derive the formula of path metric and find that in the original paper on DAC, the intuitive formula of path metric is not correct. In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, in this paper, we consider the case where the process of encoding is distributed and prone to error. We introduce the problem of distributed encoding, comprised of a set of $K \in \mathbb {N}$ isolated source nodes and $N \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of the adversarial nodes, denoted by $\beta \in \mathbb {N}$ , and the cardinality of the set of symbols that each one generates, denoted by $v \in \mathbb {N}$ , the process of decoding from the encoded symbols could be impossible. Assume that a decoder connects to an arbitrary subset of $t \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes and wants to decode the symbols of the honest nodes correctly, without necessarily identifying the sets of honest and adversarial nodes. An important characteristic of a distributed encoding system is $t^{*} \in \mathbb {N}$ , the minimum of such $t$ , which is a function of $K$ , $N$ , $\beta $ , and $v$. In this paper, we study the distributed linear encoding system, i.e. one in which the encoding nodes use linear coding. In order to prove the converse of the fundamental limit, we show that when the adversary behaves in a particular way, it can always confuse the decoder between two feasible solutions that differ in the message of at least one honest node. This paper studies the problem of constructing codes correcting deletions in arrays. Under this model, it is assumed that an $n \times n$ array can experience deletions of rows and columns. These deletion errors are referred to as $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletions if ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}$ rows and ${t_{\mathrm {c}}}$ columns are deleted, while a code correcting these deletion patterns is called a $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletion correction code. The definitions for criss-cross insertions are similar. It is first shown that when $t_{r}=t_{c}$ the problems of correcting criss-cross deletions and criss-cross insertions are equivalent. The focus of this paper lies on the case of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletions. A non-asymptotic upper bound on the cardinality of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletion correction codes is shown which assures that the redundancy is at least $2n-3+2\log n$ bits. A code construction with an existential encoding and an explicit decoding algorithm is presented. The redundancy of the construction is at most $2n+4 \log n + 7 +2 \log e$. Learning-based infrared small object detection methods currently rely heavily on the classification backbone network. This tends to result in tiny object loss and feature distinguishability limitations as the network depth increases. Furthermore, small objects in infrared images are frequently emerged bright and dark, posing severe demands for obtaining precise object contrast information. For this reason, we in this paper propose a simple and effective “U-Net in U-Net” framework, UIU-Net for short, and detect small objects in infrared images. As the name suggests, UIU-Net embeds a tiny U-Net into a larger U-Net backbone, enabling the multi-level and multi-scale representation learning of objects. Moreover, UIU-Net can be trained from scratch, and the learned features can enhance global and local contrast information effectively. More specifically, the UIU-Net model is divided into two modules: the resolution-maintenance deep supervision (RM-DS) module and the interactive-cross attention (IC-A) module. RM-DS integrates Residual U-blocks into a deep supervision network to generate deep multi-scale resolution-maintenance features while learning global context information. Further, IC-A encodes the local context information between the low-level details and high-level semantic features. Extensive experiments conducted on two infrared single-frame image datasets, i.e., SIRST and Synthetic datasets, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed UIU-Net in comparison with several state-of-the-art infrared small object detection methods. The proposed UIU-Net also produces powerful generalization performance for video sequence infrared small object datasets, e.g., ATR ground/air video sequence dataset. Enhancing the diversity of sentences to describe video contents is an important problem arising in recent video captioning research. In this paper, we explore this problem from a novel perspective of customizing video captions by imitating exemplar sentence syntaxes. Specifically, given a video and any syntax-valid exemplar sentence, we introduce a new task of Syntax Customized Video Captioning (SCVC) aiming to generate one caption which not only semantically describes the video contents but also syntactically imitates the given exemplar sentence. To tackle the SCVC task, we propose a novel video captioning model, where a hierarchical sentence syntax encoder is first designed to extract the syntactic structure of the exemplar sentence, then a syntax conditioned caption decoder is devised to generate the syntactically structured caption expressing video semantics. As there is no available syntax customized groundtruth video captions, we tackle such a challenge by proposing a new training strategy, which leverages the traditional pairwise video captioning data and our collected exemplar sentences to accomplish the model learning. Extensive experiments, in terms of semantic, syntactic, fluency, and diversity evaluations, clearly demonstrate our model capability to generate syntax-varied and semantics-coherent video captions that well imitate different exemplar sentences with enriched diversities. Graph-based clustering plays an important role in the clustering area. Recent studies about graph neural networks (GNN) have achieved impressive success on graph-type data. However, in general clustering tasks, the graph structure of data does not exist such that GNN can not be applied to clustering directly and the strategy to construct a graph is crucial for performance. Therefore, how to extend GNN into general clustering tasks is an attractive problem. In this paper, we propose a graph auto-encoder for general data clustering, AdaGAE, which constructs the graph adaptively according to the generative perspective of graphs. The adaptive process is designed to induce the model to exploit the high-level information behind data and utilize the non-euclidean structure sufficiently. Importantly, we find that the simple update of the graph will result in severe degeneration, which can be concluded as better reconstruction means worse update. We provide rigorous analysis theoretically and empirically. Then we further design a novel mechanism to avoid the collapse. Via extending the generative graph models to general type data, a graph auto-encoder with a novel decoder is devised and the weighted graphs can be also applied to GNN. We study the list decodability of different ensembles of codes over the real alphabet under the assumption of an omniscient adversary. It is a well-known result that when the source and the adversary have power constraints $P $ and $N $ respectively, the list decoding capacity is equal to $\frac {1}{2}\log \frac {P}{N}$. Random spherical codes achieve constant list sizes, and the goal of the present paper is to obtain a better understanding of the smallest achievable list size as a function of the gap to capacity. We show a reduction from arbitrary codes to spherical codes, and derive a lower bound on the list size of typical random spherical codes. We also give an upper bound on the list size achievable using nested Construction-A lattices and infinite Construction-A lattices. We then define and study a class of infinite constellations that generalize Construction-A lattices and prove upper and lower bounds for the same. Other goodness properties such as packing goodness and AWGN goodness of infinite constellations are proved along the way. Finally, we consider random lattices sampled from the Haar distribution and show that if a certain conjecture that originates in analytic number theory is true, then the list size grows as a polynomial function of the gap-to-capacity. In this paper, we consider the problem of guessing a sequence subject to a distortion constraint. Specifically, we assume the following game between Alice and Bob: Alice has a sequence ${x}$ of length $n$. Bob wishes to guess ${x}$ , yet he is satisfied with finding any sequence $\hat {x}$ which is within a given distortion $D$ from $x$. Thus, he successively submits queries to Alice, until receiving an affirmative answer, stating that his guess was within the required distortion. Finding guessing strategies which minimize the number of guesses (the guesswork), and analyzing its properties (e.g., its $\rho $ –th moment) has several applications in information security, source and channel coding. Guessing subject to a distortion constraint is especially useful when considering contemporary biometrically–secured systems, where the “password” which protects the data is not a single, fixed vector but rather a ball of feature vectors centered at some ${x}$ , and any feature vector within the ball results in acceptance. We formally define the guessing problem under distortion in four different setups: memoryless sources, guessing through a noisy channel, sources with memory and individual sequences. We suggest a randomized guessing strategy which is asymptotically optimal for all setups and is five–fold universal, as it is independent of the source statistics, the channel, the moment to be optimized, the distortion measure and the distortion level. Visual surveillance for autonomous power facility inspection is considered to bethe prominent field of study in the power industry. This research field completely focuses on either object detection or image fusion which lacks the overall consideration. By considering this, a single end-to-end object detection method by incorporating the image fusion named Fast Detection Fusion Network (FDFNet) is proposed in this paper to output qualitative fused images with detection results. The parameters in the FDFnet are greatly reduced by sharing the feature extraction network between image fusion and object detection tasks, due to which a huge reduction in computational complexity is achieved. On this basis, the object detection algorithm performance on various types of power facility images is compared and analyzed. For experimentation purposes, an IR (infrared) and VIS (visible) image acquisition system has also been designed. In addition, a dataset named CVPower with different sets of images for power facility fusion detection is constructed for this research field. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve the mAP of not less than 70%, process 2 frames per second, and produce high qualitative fused images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to develop a robust and data driven automatic motion artifacts (MA) removal technique from electrodermal activity (EDA) signal. Methods: we proposed a deep convolutional autoencoder (DCAE) approach for automatic MA removal in EDA signals. Our model was trained using several publicly available datasets that were collected using a wide variety of stimuli to cause EDA reactions; the sample size was large ($\mathbf{N}\ = \ 385\ \text{subjects}$). We trained and validated our DCAE network using both Gaussian white noise (GWN) and realistic MA data records collected using a novel circuitry in our lab. We further evaluated and compared the performance of our DCAE model with the existing methods on two independent and unseen datasets called Chon lab motion artifact dataset II (CMAD II) and central nervous system oxygen toxicity dataset (CNS-OT). Results: Our DCAE model showed significantly higher signal-to-noise-power-ratio improvement ($\mathbf{SN}{\mathbf{R}_{\mathbf{imp}}}$) and lower mean squared error ($\mathbf{MSE}$) when compared with that of the three previous methods (averaged $\boldsymbol{S\!N\!R}_\text{imp} = 35.25\,{\text{dB}}$ , and ${\boldsymbol{M\!S\!E\ }} = 0.028$ on the MA-corrupted data). Moreover, the reconstructed EDAs from the CMAD II dataset had a mean correlation value of 0.78 (statistically significantly higher when compared with other methods) with the reference clean data from the motionless hand, whereas the raw MA-corrupted data had a correlation value of only 0.68. Conclusion: The results presented in the paper indicates that our DCAE can remove MAs with higher intensity where the existing methods fails. This paper studies the distributed linearly separable computation problem, which is a generalization of many existing distributed computing problems such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. A master asks ${\mathsf {N}}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function of ${\mathsf {K}}$ datasets, which is a set of ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf {K}}$ equal-length messages (each message is a function of one dataset). We assign some datasets to each worker in an uncoded manner, who then computes the corresponding messages and returns some function of these messages, such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf {N}}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf {N}}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability. In the literature, the specific case where ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}=1$ or where the computation cost is minimum has been considered. In this paper, we focus on the general case (i.e., general ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}} $ and general computation cost) and aim to find the minimum communication cost. We first propose a novel converse bound on the communication cost under the constraint of the popular cyclic assignment (widely considered in the literature), which assigns the datasets to the workers in a cyclic way. Motivated by the observation that existing strategies for distributed computing fall short of achieving the converse bound, we propose a novel distributed computing scheme for some system parameters. The paper presents a novel efficient encoding and decoding method for self‐correction and anti‐interference used in big data product tracing system based on the cyclic code theory. The principle of constructing code set is first illustrated. Then the specific encoding and decoding methods suitable for the algebra rules are invented in sequence for efficiency. At last, to test the new coding system, the paper accelerates the decoding time by OpenMP more than 36 times. The error‐correcting code presents its perfect recovery property with a recovery rate of more than 95% under 60% damage rate. In analyzing its efficiency, the encoding process only costs 0.0045 second in average while the time of decoding method will increase with the damage rate's ascending, but it can be controlled within 16 seconds. In comparison to other coding patterns in the references, the newly error‐correcting and anti‐interference coding method achieves a balance in complexity, encoding rate, and decoding time with its priority in recovering rate under the damage rate of 60%. This paper presents an overview of the technologies for in-loop processing and filtering in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. These processes comprise luma mapping with chroma scaling, deblocking filter, sample adaptive offset, adaptive loop filter and cross-component adaptive loop filter. They are qualified as “in-loop” because they are applied inside the encoding and decoding loops, before storing the pictures in the decoded picture buffer. The filters are complementary and address different purposes. Luma mapping with chroma scaling aims at adaptively modifying the coded samples distribution for improved coding efficiency. The deblocking filter aims at reducing blocking discontinuities. Sample adaptive offset mostly aims at reducing artifacts resulting from the quantization of transform coefficients. Adaptive loop filter and cross-component adaptive loop filter are adaptive filters enabling to enhance the reconstructed signal, using for instance Wiener-filter encoding approaches. The paper provides an overview of the in-loop filtering process and a detailed description of the filtering algorithms. Objective compression efficiency results are provided for each filter, with indication of cumulative coding gains. Subjective benefits are illustrated. This paper presents an overview of the geometric partitioning mode (GPM) algorithm that is a part of the most recent Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. The GPM algorithm aims to increase the partitioning precision of moving objects using non-rectangular and asymmetric rectangular partitions on top of the conventional rectangular block partitioning structure of VVC. Novel features of GPM contributing to the increase in coding efficiency and the reduction in encoder and decoder complexity are detailed and analyzed in this paper. Evaluated with VVC test model version 8.0 under the joint video experts team common test conditions, experimental results show that the presented GPM algorithm provides luma Bjøntegaard Delta rate reduction of 0.70% for random access and of 1.55% for low delay with B slices configurations, with roughly 3% to 5% additional encoding time and negligible decoder runtime change. Furthermore, as GPM provides more precise partitions for the boundaries of the moving objects, an improvement of visual quality is seen in GPM coded sequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
