Background: Evidence‐based medical practices for pet pigs are needed. EldonCard is a human blood‐typing card shown to be rapid and reliable in identifying blood phenotypes of pet pigs. The objective of this study was to validate EldonCard by determining its reliability, reproducibility, and robustness for its routine use in the clinical setting. Key Findings: Twenty‐four venous blood samples from pet pigs were collected for a prospective in vitro study. Blood genotypes ("EAAA0" and "EAA00") were identified in 15 samples via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All samples were phenotyped ("A," "Aweak," and "0" or "–") via EldonCard. Kappa (κ) statistics measured the level of agreement between 2 raters, and between EldonCard and PCR. McNemar's test determined if an association between the blood types and EldonCard or PCR exists, with significance at P < 0.05. Agreement between raters and methods was perfect (60/60 [100%], κ:1, P < 0.001; 15/15 [100%], κ:1, P < 0.001). There was no difference in the proportions of blood groups based on method. Significance: In conjunction with previous data, EldonCard is a rapid, accurate, reliable, precise, and robust in‐clinic blood‐typing method for the A0 system of pet pigs. Simple Summary: This article discusses how to plan the transport of fattened pigs from farms to the abattoir efficiently when the farms are coordinated with the abattoir operation. In contrast to the papers published to date that have been concerned with the farmer's profit, this paper adopts the slaughterhouse perspective. Coordination with growers should help to better plan the collection of pigs by establishing the best routes for the trucks to ensure the optimal functioning of the abattoir. Starting from a real scenario, the study delves into a complex Team Orienteering Problem, taking into account factors such as stochastic production and maximum truck workload. Assuming that the pig sector is organized as a competitive supply chain with narrow profit margins, our aim is to apply analytics to cope with the uncertainty in production costs and revenues. To create innovative, low-emission pig housing systems, the development of a prediction model appears to be a straightforward solution. This paper introduces such a model for predicting methane and ammonia emissions from two commercial pig houses with two manure management systems: one with long storage in deep pits and the other with short storage, through daily flushing of a shallow pit with sloped walls (a reduced emitting surface) and partial manure dilution. This simulation model, which considers factors like animal weight, age, feed, and pen dimensions as input data, calculates manure quantity and quality, as well as methane and ammonia emissions over the growing period. In this model, the calculation of ammonia emission involves aggregating emissions from various sources identifiable within pig houses. These sources include manure channels, slatted floors, and solid floors, encompassing fouled areas, pigs, and pen partitions. This model successfully predicts the development of methane and ammonia emissions based on animal and farm characteristics. This paper describes a model for the prediction of methane and ammonia emissions from fattening pig houses. This model was validated with continuous and discrete measurements using a reference method from two manure management systems (MMS): long storage (LS) in deep pits and short storage (SS) by daily flushing of a shallow pit with sloped walls and partial manure dilution. The average calculated methane and ammonia emissions corresponded well with the measured values. Based on the calculated and measured results, the average calculated CH4 emission (18.5 and 4.3 kg yr−1 per pig place) was in between the means from the continuous data from sensors (15.9 and 5.6 kg yr−1 per pig place) and the means from the discrete measurements using the reference method (22.0 and 3.1 kg yr−1 per pig place) for the LS and SS systems, respectively. The average calculated NH3 emission (2.6 and 1.4 kg yr−1 per pig place) corresponded well with the continuous data (2.6 and 1.2 kg yr−1 per pig place) and the discrete measurements using the reference method (2.7 and 1.0 kg yr−1 per pig place) from LS and SS, respectively. This model was able to predict the reduction potential for methane and ammonia emissions by the application of mitigation options. Furthermore, this model can be utilized as a predictive tool, enabling timely actions to be taken based on the emission prediction. The upgraded model with robust calculation rules, extensive validations, and a simplified interface can be a useful tool to assess the current situation and the impact of mitigation measures at the farm level. Traits such as meat quality and composition are becoming valuable in modern pork production; however, they are difficult to include in genetic evaluations because of the high phenotyping costs. Combining genomic information with multiple‐trait indirect selection with cheaper indicator traits is an alternative for continued cost‐effective genetic improvement. Additionally, gut microbiome information is becoming more affordable to measure using targeted rRNA sequencing, and its applications in animal breeding are becoming relevant. In this paper, we investigated the usefulness of microbial information as a correlated trait in selecting meat quality in swine. This study incorporated phenotypic data encompassing marbling, colour, tenderness, loin muscle and backfat depth, along with the characterization of gut (rectal) microbiota through 16S rRNA sequencing at three distinct time points of the animal's growth curve. Genetic progress estimation and cross‐validation were employed to evaluate the utility of utilizing host genomic and gut microbiota information for selecting expensive‐to‐record traits in crossbred individuals. Initial steps involved variance components estimation using multiple‐trait models on a training dataset, where the top 25 associated operational taxonomic units (OTU) for each meat quality trait and time point were included. The second step compared the predictive ability of multiple‐trait models incorporating different numbers of OTU with single‐trait models in a validation set. Results demonstrated the advantage of including genomic information for some traits, while in some instances, gut microbial information proved advantageous, namely, for marbling and pH. The study suggests further investigation into the shared genetic architecture between microbial features and traits, considering microbial data's compositional and high‐dimensional nature. The topic of keeping livestock is very well suited to addressing the ecological, social, and economic aspects of the sustainable production of our food in school lessons. However, the production of animal-based foods is mainly outside the personal experience of children and young people. To derive relevant implications for teaching, this paper explores the following research question: 'What conceptions do elementary school students have about keeping fattening pigs and dairy cows on farms?' In more detail, this study examines students' conceptions of stock sizes, husbandry practices, and feeding of fattening pigs and dairy cows and how these differ between urban and farm students. For this purpose, six elementary school students (MAge = 8.8 years, SD = 0.4 ; 83% female) from Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia were interviewed. Three of the subjects were growing up on a conventional farm with fattening pigs. The study is informed by the Model of Educational Reconstruction. To elicit students' conceptions, we used semi-structured guided interviews, during which students made a drawing of a farm that they described in detail. The data were evaluated with the help of qualitative content analysis. However, there are many complex factors in actual production that result in pigs not being tracked consistently over time. To address this issue, we proposed a long-term video tracking method for group-housed pigs based on improved StrongSORT. The experimental results proved that our study demonstrates high practicality, catering to the needs of practical production. It improved the efficiency of farming personnel and lays the foundation for the automated monitoring of pigs. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that we have also released a dataset specifically designed for long-term pig tracking in this paper. Pig tracking provides strong support for refined management in pig farms. However, long and continuous multi-pig tracking is still extremely challenging due to occlusion, distortion, and motion blurring in real farming scenarios. This study proposes a long-term video tracking method for group-housed pigs based on improved StrongSORT, which can significantly improve the performance of pig tracking in production scenarios. In addition, this research constructs a 24 h pig tracking video dataset, providing a basis for exploring the effectiveness of long-term tracking algorithms. For object detection, a lightweight pig detection network, YOLO v7-tiny_Pig, improved based on YOLO v7-tiny, is proposed to reduce model parameters and improve detection speed. To address the target association problem, the trajectory management method of StrongSORT is optimized according to the characteristics of the pig tracking task to reduce the tracking identity (ID) switching and improve the stability of the algorithm. The experimental results show that YOLO v7-tiny_Pig ensures detection applicability while reducing parameters by 36.7% compared to YOLO v7-tiny and achieving an average video detection speed of 435 frames per second. In terms of pig tracking, Higher-Order Tracking Accuracy (HOTA), Multi-Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTP), and Identification F1 (IDF1) scores reach 83.16%, 97.6%, and 91.42%, respectively. Compared with the original StrongSORT algorithm, HOTA and IDF1 are improved by 6.19% and 10.89%, respectively, and Identity Switch (IDSW) is reduced by 69%. To ensure the safety of the hogs in large-scale pig farming, the hog transfer truck needs to be cleaned and disinfected at high temperatures. This paper proposes a model of the transfer truck drying room based on spherical air outlets, using RC-4HC temperature and humidity measuring instruments, electronic scale, and other devices to measure the drying process of the transfer trucks at different outdoor ambient temperatures, different deck placement techniques, and different degrees of preheating, and explores the problem of excessive energy consumption in the transfer truck drying room. The outcome demonstrates that the transfer truck drying chamber has the fastest drying time—3137 s. The drying room's energy use is also significantly influenced by the transfer truck leaching effect, deck positioning, which has the second-highest impact, and the outdoor ambient temperature, which has a negligible effect. The fuel consumption of the drying room is decreased by 5.19% and 25.78%, respectively, when the second truck is preheated for 600 s and 1500 s utilizing the leftover heat from the drying of the first truck. Seabuckthorn is rich in polysaccharides, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, fatty acids, vitamins, and other active components. It has biological functions such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, liver-protecting, and cholagogic, which can enhance the immunity and antioxidant function of livestock and poultry, improve growth performance, and improve the quality of livestock and poultry products. Adding seabuckthorn residue, seeds, leaves or extracts to diet can promote the production of pigs, sheep, dairy cows and broilers to varying degrees, reduce feed costs and improve the economic benefits of breeding, but the active components and molecular mechanisms of seabuckthorn promoting livestock and poultry production are unclear. Livestock and poultry farming, as a crucial component of agricultural production, poses a substantial threat to the ecological environment due to the discharge of wastewater. In recent years, researchers have proposed various resource treatment technologies for livestock and poultry breeding wastewater. However, a comprehensive discussion regarding the limitations and avenues for optimizing resource utilization technologies for livestock and poultry farming wastewater treatment is notably absent in existing literature. This paper takes swine wastewater as an illustrative case and undertakes a review of the advantages, disadvantages, and optimization directions of resource treatment technologies, including physical and chemical technology, microbial metabolism, microbial electrochemistry, constructed wetlands, and microalgae-based techniques. Based on mass balance, the recovery rates of various treatment technologies are estimated, and it was found that microbial electrochemistry and constructed wetland techniques may become the mainstream for resource utilization in the future. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes that in addition to resource efficiency, the optimization of resource utilization technologies for swine wastewater should also focus on the following aspects: (1) striking a balance between environmental impact and economic benefits; (2) reducing the cost of resource and energy utilization; and (3) safeguarding environmental and ecological security. This paper analyzes the green production efficiency (GPE) and spatial divergence of the hog breeding industry, with the aim of providing a foundation for the rational layout of hog breeding and promoting the industry's high-quality development. The paper uses the SBM model to estimate GPE in 29 provinces, cities, and districts of China from 2006 to 2019. Furthermore, it analyzes the spatial divergence of GPE and its driving factors using divergence indexes and the Geodetector. The results show that China's GPE of the hog breeding industry increased from 0.409 to 0.496 between 2006 and 2019. The highest efficiency occurred during the I-period, while the lowest efficiency was observed during the II-period. The highest efficiency was in the key development region, and the lowest efficiency was in the potential growth region. The spatial divergence of GPE in the hog breeding industry expanded, with labor input, non-point source pollution, resource endowment, and environmental load bearing being the main driving factors for the expansion in each period. The potential growth region had the largest spatial divergence, mainly affected by resource endowment. In contrast, the constrained development region had the smallest spatial divergence, mainly affected by resource endowment and pollutant emissions. The spatial divergence of moderate and key development regions was considerable, mainly affected by environmental investment, environmental load bearing, and pollutant emissions. Therefore, the key to improving the GPE of the hog breeding industry is to promote the adoption of advanced technology, such as labor-saving, material-saving, and emission reduction technologies. Moreover, several actions should be taken to reduce the spatial divergence among different regions, such as integrated breeding, clean standards, large-scale breeding, and high-end boutique. Identification of meat product adulteration is important to help fair-trade and to enable consumers to make informed choices. Detection of meat adulteration requires reliable analytical methods. Here, we report development of a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for the detection of tissues of pig origin. We developed a kit containing lyophilized paper-buttons impregnated with the LAMP master-mix together with Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) paper strips. This paper-based LAMP-LFA kit is a ready to use device for remote settings and useful for the quick and efficient detection of tissue of pig origin. LAMP primers targeting mitochondrial COI gene and corresponding probes specific to LAMP amplicon were designed. LAMP reaction component, optimization details regarding thermal amplification protocol, hybridization conditions for probes, design of LFA paper-strips, and detection methods are provided. The paper-based LAMP-LFA platform allowed analysis of the amplified products using HNB dye-based quick visual method and gel electrophoresis-based validation to avoid personal bias. Assay limit-of-detection was 10 fg of DNA template in the reaction. Assay was validated on samples from different pigs, coded samples, binary meat admixture, diversely processed meat to mimic field situation, and supernatant from Phire Animal Tissue Direct PCR kit. The paper-based LAMP-LFA results were comparable with the pre-standardized species-specific polymerase chain reaction, a time consuming and expensive process. Lyophilized paper-based LAMP buttons in the form of a ready-to-use kit were developed to store reaction mixture. LAMP buttons were stable for up to four months when stored at 4 °C. Developed assay is capable of a rapid (3 hrs) identification of tissue of pig origin in tested samples, cost-effective, user-friendly, and requires minimal training making it a method of choice in remote point-of-care sites. Streptococcus suis (S. suis) infections in weaned pigs are common and responsible for a high consumption of antimicrobials, and their presence is assumed to be multi-factorial. A specific evidence-based veterinary guideline to support the control of S. suis in weaned pigs was developed for veterinary practitioners in the Netherlands in 2014. Adherence to the S. suis clinical practice guideline helps veterinary practitioners to prevent and control the disease in a systematical approach and thereby improve antimicrobial stewardship and contribute to the prevention of antimicrobial resistance in animals and humans. The impact of such a clinical practice guideline on (animal) disease management depends not only on its content, but also largely on the extent to which practitioners adhere to the clinical guideline in practice. When the S. suis guideline was published, no specific activities were undertaken to support veterinarians' uptake and implementation, thereby contributing to suboptimal adherence in clinical practice. As the S. suis guideline was comprehensively written by veterinary experts following an evidence-based approach, our aim was not to judge the (scientific) quality of the guideline but to study the possibility to improve the currently low adherence of this guideline in veterinary practice. This paper describes the systematic development, using Implementation Mapping, of a theory-based intervention program to support swine veterinarians' adherence to the S. suis guideline. The knowledge, skills, beliefs about capabilities, and beliefs about consequences domains are addressed in the program, which includes seven evidence-based methods (modelling, tailoring, feedback, discussion, persuasive communication, active learning, and self-monitoring) for use in program activities such as a peer-learning meeting and an e-learning module. The intervention program has been developed for practicing swine veterinarians, lasts eight months, and is evaluated through a stepped-wedge design. This paper reviews studies investigating the impact of additional vitamin supplementation on stress reduction in pigs. Vitamin A can be beneficial in counteracting viral and parasitic threats. Vitamin B can be a potential solution for reproductive issues, but it might also be beneficial in reducing the effects of inappropriate nutrition. Vitamin C plays a vital role in reducing the effects of heat stress or exposure to toxins in pigs. Vitamin D proves to be beneficial in addressing stress induced mostly by infections and weaning, while vitamin E has been shown to mitigate the effects of toxins, heat stress, or transport stress. This review highlights the potential benefits of these dietary antioxidants in maintaining pig health, enhancing productivity, and counteracting the adverse effects of various stressors. With the prohibition of antibiotics in feed, natural plant components as feed additives instead of antibiotics have gradually attracted wide attention and research. Resveratrol, as a natural polyphenol compound with various biological activities, which mainly exists in grapes, Polygonum cuspidatum and other plants, and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anticancer properties. Adding resveratrol to feed can improve the intestinal health of pigs, promote the balance and growth of intestinal microorganisms, and enhance the immunity and disease resistance of pigs. In addition, resveratrol can also improve mitochondrial function and antioxidant capacity of pigs, improve energy metabolism and utilization efficiency of pigs, and improve the growth performance and reproductive performance of pigs. Computer vision methods for non-contact detection of herd pigs could help detect early disease and reduce mortality rates by analyzing pig behavior. Due to the limitation of breeding space and cost, the unit breeding area is relatively dense, making it difficult to detect all pigs for a long time without interruption. In order to improve the detection performance, this paper proposes an end-to-end efficient and accurate herd pig detection framework based on YOLOv7 target detection model, which is named Ghost-YOLOv7-SIoU. In this framework, the feature extraction backbone network consists of a series of directly connected efficient layer aggregation networks (ELAN) and downsampling modules. The neck network contains a feature pyramid network and path aggregation network. Ghost convolution is adopted to replace the 3 × 3 standard convolution of the ELAN module in backbone network and the scaled-up ELAN module in neck network to obtain rich features while reducing the parameter number and computational effort. Furthermore, to speed up the model convergence and improve the model robustness and accuracy, SIoU loss is used for bounding box regression in the training stage. On the VOC2012 dataset, the number of parameters and floating-point operations decreased by 13.4% and 15.7% compared to YOLOv7, with comparable detection accuracy. Additionally, the number of parameters and floating-point operations decreased by 13.7% and 16.1% on our pig dataset. Ghost-YOLOv7-SIoU is superior to YOLOV4-CSP and YOLOR-CSP in accuracy. Simple Summary: The analysis of pig saliva, which is easily available and rich in bioactive ingredients, has been widely studied, showing potential in disease diagnosis and treatment for pig production management. Studies have shown that porcine saliva analytes have important application potential in disease detection and can be used as disease biomarkers and therapeutic monitoring indicators, as well as for prognostic evaluation. Through the changes in specific proteins, metabolites, and microbial composition in porcine saliva, porcine saliva analytes can provide a new strategy for early diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and treatment of diseases. As an indicator of pig health, saliva can be used as a noninvasive sample for disease detection and monitoring. Saliva is an important exocrine fluid that is easy to collect and is a complex mixture of proteins and other molecules from multiple sources from which considerable biological information can be mined. Pig saliva, as an easily available biological liquid rich in bioactive ingredients, is rich in nucleic acid analytes, such as eggs, enzymes, amino acids, sugars, etc. The expression levels of these components in different diseases have received extensive attention, and the analysis of specific proteins, metabolites, and biological compositions in pig saliva has become a new direction for disease diagnosis and treatment. The study of the changes in analytes in pig saliva can provide a new strategy for early diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and treatment of diseases. Judaic law famously bans pigs. For millennia, scholars have wondered why. This paper uses the economics of property rights to resolve the puzzle. We argue that the Judaic pig ban was an instrument for internalizing swine externalities. Free ranging pigs in search of sustenance trespass on agricultural landowners' property, wreaking destruction. Activities that foster such pigs thus create negative externalities that can cripple agricultural economies. When the expected cost of swine externalities becomes large, internalization becomes worthwhile: lawmakers with a vested interest in the agricultural economy ban activities that foster free ranging pigs. That is what transpired in ancient Judah, where lawmakers were priests whose livelihoods depended on agriculture, where all swine ranged freely, and where the expected cost of swine externalities surged during the late Iron Age. Lawmakers invoked God to enjoin involvement with pigs because a supernatural injunction was cheaper to enforce than a natural one: in a land of faithful Hebrews, Yahweh's swine prohibition enforced itself. Based on the training effect evaluation of swimmers, this paper proposes an infrared image detection method based on HOG feature extraction and infrared image detection technology. Since optical images are easily affected by illumination and other factors in complex environments, infrared images are chosen as the object of training effect evaluation in this study. Infrared images have the advantages of illumination insensitivity, through fog and so on, which can better reflect the posture and action of swimmers. The infrared image detection method based on HOG feature extraction is described in detail, and the feature vector of swimmers is obtained. By detecting the infrared images of the training set and the test set, the evaluation results of the training effect of the swimmers are obtained. This paper proposes a method for automatic pig detection and segmentation using RGB-D data for precision livestock farming. The proposed method combines the enhanced YOLOv5s model with the Res2Net bottleneck structure, resulting in improved fine-grained feature extraction and ultimately enhancing the precision of pig detection and segmentation in 2D images. Additionally, the method facilitates the acquisition of 3D point cloud data of pigs in a simpler and more efficient way by using the pig mask obtained in 2D detection and segmentation and combining it with depth information. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, two datasets were constructed. The first dataset consists of 5400 images captured in various pig pens under diverse lighting conditions, while the second dataset was obtained from the UK. The experimental results demonstrated that the improved YOLOv5s_Res2Net achieved a mAP@0.5:0.95 of 89.6% and 84.8% for both pig detection and segmentation tasks on our dataset, while achieving a mAP@0.5:0.95 of 93.4% and 89.4% on the Edinburgh pig behaviour dataset. The temporal interference stimulation is a new technique to modulate brain activity by applying multiple channels of voltage-controlled current source (VCCS) simultaneously to the receptor surface. In this paper, the envelopes of the overlapped current waves at several areas of the receptor were analyzed and discussed with different circuit structures of VCCS. A complementary differential current source (CDCS) was designed to fit the best circuit topology based on the analysis of the enhanced Howland current source structure. Experiments were conducted by injecting current to a swine tissue using the CDCS and conventional VCCS and acquiring the voltage waveform data from different parts of the tissue. The waveforms were compared and analyzed, revealing that the conventional VCCS may generate an interference envelope in unexpected regions, while the CDCS did not. In this paper, measurements of 2.012 bone remains from four different domestic species (sheep, goats, cattle and pigs) originating from 33 Bronze Age archaeological sites from the Balearic Islands, mainland Iberia, southern France and Sardinia, and spanning about 2500 years (3700-700 cal. BCE) have been compared. The results show that a decrease in animal size occurred in the Balearic Islands during the Bronze Age. It was not a local phenomenon but rather was a general pattern that happened in different territories. Yet it was more marked on the islands. The evidence shows that the four analyzed species were not affected in the same way and it was a nonlinear phenomenon. Indeed, during the Late Bronze Age some archaeological sites from the Balearics had taller caprines compared with the other contemporaneous places, also on the continent. A multi-factor explanation for these fluctuations is proposed in this paper, showing that animal sizes generally decreased during late prehistory -especially cattle- and this process could reflect different factors such as a combination of limited feeding, increased human pressure and endogamy. Simple Summary: In many countries, pigs and broiler chickens are housed in intensive systems. Pigs live on concrete floors and straw is not provided. Non-straw enrichments may not be as effective as straw, but they may improve the lives of millions of animals. In many countries, large retail and restaurant buyers have been major drivers of improvements in animal welfare. They used their economic influence to enforce basic welfare standards on farms. They have also been effective at improving animal welfare in slaughter plants. Buyers were often motivated by pressure from animal rights activists to address the issue of animal welfare. On farms, there are two types of welfare programs. They are specialized high welfare niche programs and supply chain programs that maintain basic standards for large commercial farms. This paper will emphasize research literature on practical environmental enrichments for pigs and broiler chickens that will be easy to implement. Pigs prefer enrichment objects that they can chew up and deform. Effective enrichment objects for broiler chickens are peck stones, ramps, platforms, and gradient lighting. It is essential to choose enrichments that the animals will actively engage with. In Europe, regulations contain guidance to maintain high standards of animal welfare. In many parts of the world, large buyers for supermarkets or restaurants are the main enforcers of basic animal welfare standards. They can have considerable influence on improving standards on large commercial farms. Research clearly shows that straw is one of the most effective environmental enrichment for pigs. On some large farms, there are concerns that straw will either clog waste management systems or bring in disease. This paper contains a review of both scientific research and practical experience with enrichment devices that are easy to implement. Pigs prefer enrichment objects that they can chew up and deform. Broiler chickens prefer to climb up on objects, hide under them or peck them. This study aimed to identify whether the silkworm pupae (SWP) added to pigs' diets can be considered a valuable protein-rich alternative source. The silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) and its by-products are highly valuable in terms of nutrition, medicine, and commerce. The SWP is the main by-product of the sericulture, considered a well-balanced source of nutrients in terms of proteins, lipids, minerals, vitamins and various bioactive substances such as fatty acids, peptides, and polyphenols with antioxidant, anticancer, cardiovascular, hepato-protective properties. The mulberry silkworm's potential for use in human food has been previously extensively documented, whereas the preponderance of literature data on SWP used in the livestock industry specific focus on poultry. There is limited pig-related data. In this study, we reviewed the most recently published papers on PubMed, Elsevier, MDPI, and Research Gate, using the keywords "silkworm pupae", "composition", "protein", and "pigs". Pig production has a short history in Uganda. The majority of pigs are kept by smallholder farmers in rural areas where access to veterinary services is limited, and pig keeping has been suggested as a potential pathway out of poverty for smallholders. Previous research has identified the disease of African swine fever (ASF) as a major threat, causing high mortalities in pigs. With no available cure or vaccine, the only option is to implement biosecurity measures, i.e. strategies that prevent the spread of ASF. This paper draws on data from four months of ethnographic fieldwork in rural northern Uganda. Combining methods of participant observation, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and a survey, the aim was to improve understanding of smallholders' perceptions and responses to pig health issues such as ASF. Applying the concept of practical knowledge, this paper analyses the potential and limitations of smallholders' practice-based knowledge as a means of dealing with pig health issues. The results show that while pigs were appreciated locally for providing an income, many informants found it difficult to deal with pig diseases effectively. Consequently, informants commonly expressed a need for other kinds of knowledge in their pig production, indicating that veterinary advice can play an important role in reducing the negative impact of pig health issues. For animal health provision to have relevance in this context, however, veterinary practitioners must pay close attention to smallholders' priorities and ways of knowing in their livestock keeping. Results further show that pig health issues made some informants abandon pig production altogether. To enhance the potential of pig production as a poverty mitigation strategy in Uganda, research and policy need to focus on ways of bettering general conditions for smallholder pig keeping, including improving the quality of and access to veterinary services in rural areas. The device uses audio technology that can monitor and evaluate the herd's respiratory health status through cough-sound recognition and quantification. The device also has temperature and humidity sensors to monitor environmental conditions. It has an alarm system based on variations in coughing patterns and abrupt temperature changes. However, some limitations of the existing technology were identified. Many researchers consider gut microbiota (trillions of microorganisms) an endogenous organ of its animal host, which confers a vast genetic diversity in providing the host with essential biological functions. Particularly, the gut microbiota regulates not only gut tissue structure but also gut health and gut functionality. This paper first summarized those common bacterial species (dominated by the Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria phyla) in swine gut and then briefly discussed their roles in swine nutrition and health, which include roles in nutrient metabolism, pathogen exclusion, and immunity modulation. Secondly, the current knowledge on how dietary nutrients and feed additives affect the gut bacterial composition and nutrient metabolism in pigs was discussed. Finally, how dietary amino acids affect the relative abundances and metabolism of bacteria in the swine gut was reviewed. Tryptophan supplementation promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and suppresses pathogens, while arginine metabolism affects nitrogen recycling, impacting gut immune response and health. Glutamate and glutamine supplementations elevate the levels of beneficial bacteria and mitigate pathogenic ones. It was concluded that nutritional strategies to manipulate gut microbial ecosystems are useful measures to optimize gut health and gut functions. For example, providing pigs with nutrients that promote the growth of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can lead to better gut health and growth performance, especially when dietary protein is limited. Further research to establish the mechanistic cause-and-effect relationships between amino acids and the dynamics of gut microbiota will allow swine producers to reap the greatest return on their feed investment. This paper analyzes the advantages and critical points of the legal framework for the control of ASF in wild boar, focusing on the role of official veterinary services in European Union Member States (EU MS). Recently, the African swine fever (ASF) epizootic has been reported in domestic pigs and wild boars in several European Union Member States (EU MS) and epidemiological evidence has accumulated which indicates that wild boar play a key role in maintaining and spreading the disease. Thanks to the experience gained when managing ASF outbreaks in Sardinia (Italy) and Eastern Europe, Directive 2002/60 CE was issued. This directive represented an important step forward in controlling the disease, particularly the risk of spreading the virus to wild animals. Since 2021, according to Regulation (EU) 2016/429, which is also called "Animal Health Law—AHL", when the MS competent authority suspects or confirms ASF (a cat. A listed disease) in wild animals, it is mandatory to conduct surveillance in the wild boar population and implement the necessary control measures. Within AHL, Regulations (EU) 2020/687 and 2023/594 established special ASF control measures in kept and wild porcine animals, and their products and by-products, focusing on and underlying old and new responsibilities that vets (both public and private ones) have to accomplish under the new regulations. The new change in the legal framework deals with specific measures to be applied in the wild and represents a great challenge for MS veterinary services. Some of these measures have been well established in the last two decades, particularly those related to application in the farming system, while other measures are still new to veterinary health management and require a holistic approach in terms of intensity, considering all geographical, ecological, productive, cultural and social features of the involved EU MS. Research in many forensic science fields commonly uses domestic pigs (Sus spp.) as proxies for human remains, due to their physiological and anatomical similarities, as well as being more readily available. Unfortunately, previous research, especially that which compares the decompositional process, has shown that pigs are not appropriate proxies for humans. To date, there has not been any published research that specifically addresses whether domestic pigs are adequate human proxies for the geophysical detection of clandestine graves. As such, the aim of this paper was to compare the geophysical responses of pig cadavers and human donor graves, in order to determine if pigs can indeed be used as adequate human proxies. To accomplish this, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) responses on single and multiple pig cadaver graves were compared to single and multiple human donor graves, all of which are in known locations within the same geological environment. The results showed that under field conditions, both GPR and ERT were successful at observing human and pig burials, with no obvious differences between the detected geophysical responses. The results also showed that there were no differences in the geophysical responses of those who were clothed and unclothed. The similarity of the responses may reflect that the geophysical techniques can detect graves despite what their contents are. Japanese encephalitis virus is a mosquito-borne member of the Flaviviridae family. JEV is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia and is characterized by encephalitis, high lethality, and neurological sequelae in survivors. The virus also causes severe disease in swine, which are an amplifying host in the transmission cycle, and in horses. US agricultural authorities have recently recognized the threat to the swine industry and initiated preparedness activities. Other mosquito-borne viruses exotic to the Western Hemisphere have been introduced and established in recent years, including West Nile, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, and JEV has recently invaded continental Australia for the first time. These events amply illustrate the potential threat of JEV to US health security. Susceptible indigenous mosquito vectors, birds, feral and domestic pigs, and possibly bats, constitute the receptive ecological ingredients for the spread of JEV in the US. Fortunately, unlike the other virus invaders mentioned above, an inactivated whole virus JE vaccine (IXIARO®) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for human use in advance of a public health emergency, but there is no veterinary vaccine. Simple Summary: The authors' aim was to summarise the general concept and approach of the Hungarian National PRRS Eradication Program. However, limits on the length of the paper meant that many important points of the process could not be described in full detail. In some cases, previous publications were cited to guide the readers to a more detailed description of particular eradication parts. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a widespread infectious disease that is currently a major cause of economic losses in pig production. In Hungary, a National PRRS Eradication Program has been introduced to attain a more efficient, economic, and competitive international market position. The program has been also approved by the EU, but the resulting legal obligations have imposed a burden on Hungarian producers to comply with EU competition rules. The implementation of the program has been carried out by the veterinary authorities with the consent of, continuous support from and monitoring conducted by organisations within the pig sector as well as a scientific committee. The PRRS eradication program in Hungary was based on a regional territorial principle and was compulsory for all pig holdings within the regions. In Hungary, large fattening farms operate as all-in/all-out or continuous flow systems. Large-scale breeding herds are predominantly farrow-to-finish types. Although its significance has decreased in recent decades, 20% of the Hungarian pig population is still kept on small (backyard) farms (<100 animals). All PRRSV-infected large-scale farms had to develop a unit-adapted eradication plan, including external and internal biosecurity measures, vaccinations, etc. It was crucial to render each fattening unit free of the disease, as fattening units play a significant role in spreading the virus within the country. The eradication efforts mainly implemented were depopulation–repopulation methods, but on some farms a testing and removal method has been used. As the eradication progressed over the years, the introduction of infected fattening pigs was restricted. Thanks to these measures, Hungarian large-scale fattening farms became PRRSV-free by the end of 2018. The PRRSV-free status of small-scale herds was achieved by the end of 2015 and was maintained between 2016 and 2021. By 31 December 2021, all breeding pigs in large-scale farms in Hungary were free of wild-type PRRS virus. By 31 March 2022, the total pig population of the country, including all backyard farms and fattening units, achieved PRRSV-free status. The future goal is to ensure and maintain the PRRSV-free status of Hungary via strict import regulations of live animals combined with the continuous and thorough screening of incoming and resident herds for the presence of the virus. The purpose of the paper was to explore the effect of adding different levels of soybean active peptides to the diet on the growth performance, carcass traits, serum biochemical indexes and intestinal microorganisms of finishing pigs. A total of 120 finishing pigs with a weight of (72.40±1.10) kg were randomly divided into four groups, with three replicates in each group and 10 pigs in each replicate. The finishing pigs in the control group were fed a basic diet, and group A, group B and group C added 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% soybean active peptides in the basic diet, respectively. The experiment lasted for 42 days. The results showed that the average daily gain of the finishing pigs was significantly increased by adding soybean active peptide (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the feed-to-weight ratio of the group B was significantly reduced (P<0.05), and the feed-to-weight ratio and average back fat thickness of the group C were significantly reduced ( P<0.05). Adding soybean active peptide could improve the meat color and significantly reduce the dripping loss of the finishing pigs in the group B and group C (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the content of serum MDA in the experimental groups decreased significantly (P<0.05), the content of serum BUN in the group B and group C decreased significantly (P<0.05), the content of IgM and T-AOC increased significantly (P<0.05). The activity of serum AST and GSH-Px in the group C decreased significantly, and the content of IgG increased significantly (P<0.05). The flora with a relative abundance of more than 1% at the phylum level in each experimental group included Firmicutes, Proteobacterium and Bacteroides, and the relative abundance of Proteobacterium in the group C was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The flora with a relative abundance over 1% at the genus level included Actinomycetes, Coprococcus, Clostridium and Enterobacter, and there was no significant difference in the relative abundance of each genus compared with the control group (P>0.05). The study indicates that adding 0.4%~0.6% soybean active peptide to the diet can improve the growth performance, modify carcass traits, adjust serum biochemical indexes, and affect the intestinal microbial composition of finishing pigs. Behavioural and physiological studies conducted during the pre-slaughter period revealed that producer-controlled factors at the farm, such as housing system, previous handling experience, genetics, gender, nutrition and slaughter weight can have an impact on pigs' ease of handling and sensitivity to stress, which result in loss of profits for the pork chain due to transport losses, reduced carcase value due to lesions and bruises and meat quality defects. Research has shown that pigs originating from enriched housing conditions, not over-selected for lean deposition and trained to be handled are easier to handle and more resilient to the effects of physical stress prior to slaughter. However, the effects on meat quality are not clear. The production of entire males and immunocastrates can be a valid alternative to surgical castration, provided specific practices are applied to limit aggressiveness in mixed group situations and the risk of bruised carcases. Recommendations for the transport and handling of heavier slaughter pigs must be adapted to improve ease of handling and reduce transport losses, aggressiveness and fatigue-related meat quality defects. This paper tracks the regulation of the border crossings of pigs and people in and out of Denmark. By bringing together pig and human unborn life, fully fledged bodies, and genomes, I direct analytical attention to the governance of entangled living things. Where existing scholarship has unravelled how central animal-based institutions build up the nation, I investigate how pig–human entanglements at biological, spatial, and genomic margins make the nation. First, I examine how pig breeding and human reproductive policies regulate the biological 'borders' through which pigs and humans may enter the Danish nation. Second, I scrutinise how wild boar fences and human immigration policies regulate the entrance of pigs and human migrants at the Danish geographical borders. Third, I examine how scientific, political, and financial investments into precision medicine shape the genomic 'borders' regulating the containment and movement of pig and human genomes. I argue that the intertwined processes of selection and care are at the centre of administering the entry points to Denmark. In the Danish context, selecting pig and human lives at these various 'borders' is conceptually linked to securing universal care and a high level of equality for humans already belonging within the nation. Pig husbandry constitutes a significant segment within the broader framework of livestock farming, with porcine well-being emerging as a paramount concern due to its direct implications on pig breeding and production. An easily observable proxy for assessing the health of pigs lies in their daily patterns of movement. The daily movement patterns of pigs can be used as an indicator of their health, in which more active pigs are usually healthier than those who are not active, providing farmers with knowledge of identifying pigs' health state before they become sick or their condition becomes life-threatening. However, the conventional means of estimating pig mobility largely rely on manual observations by farmers, which is impractical in the context of contemporary centralized and extensive pig farming operations. In response to these challenges, multi-object tracking and pig behavior methods are adopted to monitor pig health and welfare closely. Regrettably, these existing methods frequently fall short of providing precise and quantified measurements of movement distance, thereby yielding a rudimentary metric for assessing pig health. This paper proposes a novel approach that integrates optical flow and a multi-object tracking algorithm to more accurately gauge pig movement based on both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the shortcomings of solely relying on tracking algorithms. The optical flow records accurate movement between two consecutive frames and the multi-object tracking algorithm offers individual tracks for each pig. By combining optical flow and the tracking algorithm, our approach can accurately estimate each pig's movement. Moreover, the incorporation of optical flow affords the capacity to discern partial movements, such as instances where only the pig's head is in motion while the remainder of its body remains stationary. The experimental results show that the proposed method has superiority over the method of solely using tracking results, i.e., bounding boxes. The reason is that the movement calculated based on bounding boxes is easily affected by the size fluctuation while the optical flow data can avoid these drawbacks and even provide more fine-grained motion information. The virtues inherent in the proposed method culminate in the provision of more accurate and comprehensive information, thus enhancing the efficacy of decision-making and management processes within the realm of pig farming. To solve the problem that individual visual features could not be accurately extracted from low-light and high-noise pig face images in intensive farming, the optimal fitting curve parameters of image brightness enhancement were defined, and the Zero-DCE model was improved and Denoise-Net was introduced to achieve brightness enhancement and high-noise suppression of a single low-light pig face image. The experimental results show that, compared with EnlightGAN, Zero-DCE, Retinex, and SSE, the algorithm in this paper (DCE-Denoise-Net) has good results on image quality metrics such as information entropy, Brisque, NIQE, and PIQE in the absence of reference images. The image quality is improved. On the basis of improving the low visibility of low-light images, denoising was achieved. This paper highlights some of the nonhuman animal bodies observed during the #BlackLivesMatter protests within the United States in 2020 – specifically, the use of pig, horse, and dog bodies during street protests. This history harmed protesters during #BlackLivesMatter protests, being described as suffering "like animals," and the use of "pig" as an epithet for the police is explored. Livestock body measurement is a key indicator for predicting their live weight, probability of illness, or readiness for market, to help farmers and breeders control their health condition and slaughter performance. Livestock body measurement methods develop from manual ways based on conventional tools to non-contact ways based on analysing data obtained from remote sensing instruments, with a new trend to extract body measurements from 3D point clouds. But the accuracy and robustness of current methods are affected by noise and point cloud data missing caused by self occlusions of animals. In this paper, a method to solve the problems of animal body measurement is proposed. In this method, the statistical shape model for animals are fitted to livestock point cloud data, and then body measurements are extracted from the reconstructed meshes. With the help of the statistical shape model, the livestock body measurement method solves the problem of missing point cloud data and inconsistency caused by livestock movement in precision animal husbandry. The method is verified on two typical livestock including cattle and pigs. In cattle body measurement, the overall estimation accuracy is 91.95%, while in pig body measurement, the accuracy is 87.63%. The migration process of the pig in oil and gas pipeline is a complex dynamic problem. During the pigging operation, the variation of friction force caused by the nonlinear contact between the sealing disc and the pipe wall is the key factor affecting the dynamic characteristics of the pig motion. At present, the existed pigging models for predicting pigging behavior regard friction as an invariant constant. Experimental research indicates that the friction force of the pig varies with the contact force and the lubrication conditions. Therefore, the assumption that the friction force is constant cannot reflect the friction dynamic characteristics of the pig during pigging, and will also affect the accuracy of the pigging model. Exploring the variation of friction force of pig under different conditions is the basis of establishing the transient dynamic model of a pig. As a result, in this paper, a method of direct measurement of contact force between the pig and the pipeline is presented, the contact force, the friction force, as well as the friction coefficient of the pig are obtained from the experiment. Outbreaks of enteric disease in pigs are frequently multifactorial and multiple microorganisms can co-exist and interact. Furthermore, several pathogens, such as Clostridium perfrigens type A, Rotavirus and Lawsonia intracellularis, may be present in the gut in the absence of clinical signs. Thus, diagnosis must be based on a differential approach in order to develop a tailored control strategy, considering that treatment and control programs for enteric diseases are pathogen-specific. Correct sampling for laboratory analyses is fundamental for the diagnostic work-up of enteric disease in pigs. For example, histology is the diagnostic gold standard for several enteric disorders, and sampling must ensure the collection of representative and optimal intestinal samples. These pigs present a white belt of variable width, generally centred on the shoulders or trunk on a solid black background. Using the online database, 42 pig breeds, their origin, productive, and reproductive data, and conservation status have been identified. Protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are associated with the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated morbidity and mortality. The conventional dialysis techniques are unable to efficiently remove PBUTs due to their plasma protein binding. Therefore, novel approaches are being developed, but these require validation in animals before clinical trials can begin. We conducted a systematic review to document PBUT concentrations in various models and species. The search strategy returned 1163 results for which abstracts were screened, resulting in 65 full-text papers for data extraction (rats (n = 41), mice (n = 17), dogs (n = 3), cats (n = 4), goats (n = 1), and pigs (n = 1)). We performed descriptive and comparative analyses on indoxyl sulfate (IS) concentrations in rats and mice. The data on large animals and on other PBUTs were too heterogeneous for pooled analysis. Most rodent studies reported mean uremic concentrations of plasma IS close to or within the range of those during kidney failure in humans, with the highest in tubular injury models in rats. Compared to nephron loss models in rats, a greater rise in plasma IS compared to creatinine was found in tubular injury models, suggesting tubular secretion was more affected than glomerular filtration. Due to the complex environment of pig farms and the diversity of pig behaviors, the existing methods based on deep learning cannot meet the requirements of high accuracy and real-time detection of pig eating behavior. In this paper, a SE-YOLOX model for detecting pig diet and drinking behaviors was designed. In this model, a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention module is introduced between the neck layer and the prediction layer of YOLOX, and the input feature map is compressed into a vector through global average pooling operation, and then mapped to a smaller vector through a fully connected layer. A sigmoid function is also used to compress each element in this vector to between 0 and 1 and multiply it with the original input feature map to get the weighted feature map. Through SE attention mechanism, the model can learn the importance of each channel adaptively, thus improving the detection accuracy. The experimental results show that the mean Average Prediction (mAP) of the SE-YOLOX model is 88.03%, which is higher than 13.11% of the original YOLOX model. In the process of pig growth, key biological indicators, especially body condition scoring can accurately reflect the body condition of pigs, which has great essentiality. However, the existing manual scoring is time-consuming and labor-intensive and is readily influenced by the operator's subjective, resulting in large deviations. At present, the automatic measurement network for pig body condition scoring has not been popularized, so it is necessary to research and develop an automatic, efficient and accurate pig body condition scoring (BCS) algorithm. We extracted a total of 21,943 rear and upper images of 1674 pigs from videos in the piggery and then devised an automatic labeling method for the dataset. After being scored and processed by professionals, the dataset is fed into a YOLOX-based improved object detection and measurement network. In order to further improve the BCS estimation accuracy, we introduce an attention mechanism in the measurement network and design a dynamic loss weight optimizer. Compared with the basic YOLOX network, the improved network has got promising test results. We conduct experiments on 380 pictures completely independent of the training set. The model experiment result demonstrates that the accuracy rate of the pig body condition scoring algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve a AP of 80.06%. After deployed on the jetson NX, the accuracy of model drops by only 1.53%, and the inference speed is able to reach 29FPS. This means that it have access to be applied to actual pig breeding.
