Passive sampling techniques have been widely used to determine the dissolved concentration profiles of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in sediment porewater. However, the effects of having a protection for the passive sampler on profiling HOCs concentrations in sediment porewater, especially in deep sediment, have remained unclear. To address this issue, low density polyethylene passive samplers with and without protectors, which consisted of glass fiber filter and porous stainless steel shield, were simultaneously deployed in sediment of the Dongjiang River, South China. The results showed that the protectors retarded the dissipation of performance reference compounds (PRCs) from the sampler by a factor of 2–9. The protectors seemed to exert a negligible effect on the measured concentrations of PAHs, BDE-47, and BDE-99 in surficial sediment porewater (0–14 cm depth) from both samplers. However, the sediment porewater concentration profiles of PAHs and BDE-47 from the sampler with protectors were in agreement with those normalized by dry weight in deep sediment (16–34 cm depth), indicating that a diffusion layer established by the protectors may minimize the probability of local depletion of the target analytes in deep sediment. In addition, the log K oc values of PAHs, BDE-47, and BDE-99 exhibited a slight increasing trend with sediment depth. This finding suggested that in situ passive sampling techniques could be a feasible tool in determining the site-specific log K oc values of HOCs at different sediment depths. The pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of drugs were altered under high‐altitude hypoxia. We aim to describe the population PK of atorvastatin (ATV) to identify patient characteristics that are predictive of variability in the PK parameters of the ATV and investigate the effects of high‐altitude hypoxia on the blood concentration of ATV in patients with hyperlipidemia. A total of 160 plasma concentrations were collected from 40 patients with hyperlipidemia in plateau areas and 40 in plain areas. The population pharmacokinetic model of patients with hyperlipidemia in plateau and plain areas of China was established by a nonlinear mixed‐effects model. The PK of ATV were described by a 1‐compartment model with first‐order elimination. The main PK parameters of ATV were the first‐order absorption rate (0.76 hour−1 fixed); clearance (174.22 L/h) and apparent volume of distribution (1119.62 L). The values of area and age were identified as significant covariates for the clearance, area, age, and urea for the volume of distribution. The steady‐state peak concentration in the plateau area was higher than that in the plain area. This study may suggest dose reduction is necessary for patients with hyperlipidemia in high altitudes. The rapid industrialization and urbanization that have occurred in East China in recent decades pose a threat to the local aquatic ecosystem. Pollution by heavy metals is one of the factors that threaten the environment, and assessing the risk of heavy metals is essential for promoting proper freshwater management in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, 121 surface sediment samples were collected from 63 shallow freshwater lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze and Huai River Basins (MLYHB) to study the spatial distribution of common heavy metals, including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Multivariate statistical analysis, which based on the metals' distribution and geoaccumulation index (I geo), sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), potential ecological risk (PER) index, and risk index (RI), was conducted to elucidate the pollution source and evaluate the potential ecological risks. The average concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the surface sediments were 22.6, 1.1, 74.6, 47.6, 38.3, 37.3, and 141.9 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of these metals in the surface sediments from the middle reaches were generally higher than those in sediments from the lower reaches of MLYHB. The concentrations of Cr and Ni were similar to the background values, and they mostly originated from natural detritus. Cd pollution was predominant in MLYHB, and the Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pb in the surface sediments mainly originated from industrial and agricultural activities, while As originated from pollution due to coal combustion. According to the SQGs and PER, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn likely pose a low ecological risk, while As and Cd were identified as the priority pollutants by the two methods, respectively, and may pose a high ecological risk to the aquatic ecosystem in MLYHB. Moreover, the PER of heavy metals in surface sediments is more severe in the middle reaches of MLYHB than that in the lower reaches. A direct analysis in real time (DART) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) method was established to detect organic impurities in cocaine samples seized in China. This approach allowed discrimination between linked and unlinked seizures with quick sample preparation and high throughput. The responsivities of the mass spectra of 20 organic impurities found in 47 cocaine samples were explored as factors in multivariate analysis. Based on the data from 20 organic impurities in 47 linked/unlinked cocaine samples, 25 combinations of data pretreatment methods and distance/correlation measurements were compared to choose the combination with the best discriminating power for cocaine profiling. Data pre-treatment by calculating the logarithm (L) followed by Squared Euclidean distance (Squ D ij) was chosen as the best combination for the optimal discrimination of linked and unlinked samples. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was used to analyse another 46 cocaine samples, and 38 of the 46 cocaine samples were divided into 9 linked groups. The development of the new energy vehicle industry is necessary for its advantages of saving energy and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. However, the industry is currently facing risks with regard to, for example, technology, market, and the policy. Most existing studies of industry risk focused on analyzing and evaluating risk factors and summarizing and interpreting risk phenomena. In this study, systematic classification and quantitative analysis for the risk of the new energy vehicle industry were investigated, in which the entropy weight method and cloud model were combined to evaluate and quantify the industry risk. The formation mechanism of the industry risk from endogenous and exogenous perspectives was analyzed to screen out risk-evaluation factors. Combining the expert-investigation and fuzzy-statistics methods, a risk-evaluation index system with six primary indicators and twenty-four secondary indicators was constructed. On the basis of the entropy weight-cloud model, the risk of the new energy automobile industry of Jiangsu province in July 2019 was evaluated. Results indicated that the impact of exogenous risk on the industry was greater than that of endogenous risk, and industry risk was higher than medium risk, which was close to a higher medium level. Previous studies have shown that materialism is related to environmentalism, but unstable findings still exist. To clarify the relationships between materialism and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors, the present study addressed some methodological issues and provided both individual- and regional-level evidence from China. Using data from the World Value Survey and the Chinese General Social Survey, we observed that materialism was negatively associated with pro-environmental attitudes (Study 1, n = 2,300; Study 2, n = 3,672) and pro-environmental behaviors (Study 2). Moreover, we found that pro-environmental attitudes partially mediated the association between materialism and pro-environmental behaviors in Study 2. We further searched for additional regional evidence in Study 3, and we found that the more materialistic regions are, the more energy is consumed. Results indicate that materialism is associated with decreases in pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors. Objectives: To evaluate the population pharmacokinetics of cefoperazone in children and establish an evidence-based dosing regimen using a developmental pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic approach in order to optimize cefoperazone treatment.Methods: A model-based, open-label, opportunistic-sampling pharmacokinetic study was conducted in China. Blood samples from 99 cefoperazone-treated children were collected and quantified by HPLC/MS. NONMEM software was used for population pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03113344).Results: A two-compartment model with first-order elimination agreed well with the experimental data. Covariate analysis showed that current body weight had a significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of cefoperazone. Monte Carlo simulation showed that for bacteria for which cefoperazone has an MIC of 0.5 mg/L, 78.1% of hypothetical children treated with '40 mg/kg/day, q8h, IV drip 3 h' would reach the pharmacodynamic target. For bacteria for which cefoperazone has an MIC of 8 mg/L, 88.4% of hypothetical children treated with 80 mg/kg/day (continuous infusion) would reach the treatment goal. A 160 mg/kg/day (continuous infusion) regimen can cover bacteria for which cefoperazone has an MIC of 16 mg/L. Nevertheless, even if using the maximum reported dose of 160 mg/kg/day (continuous infusion), the ratio of hypothetical children reaching the treatment target was only 9.9% for bacteria for which cefoperazone has an MIC of 32 mg/L.Conclusions: For cefoperazone, population pharmacokinetics were evaluated in children and an appropriate dosing regimen was developed based on developmental pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics. The dose indicated in the instructions (20-160 mg/kg/day) can basically cover the clinically common bacteria for which cefoperazone has an MIC of ≤16 mg/L. Objectives: The proportion of older people with dementia in China is gradually increasing with the increase in the aging population over recent years. Hypertension and diabetes are common non‐communicable diseases among rural populations in China. However, it remains unclear whether these conditions affect the occurrence and development of cognitive impairment as there is limited research on cognitive status and its risk factors among residents of rural areas. Methods: A multi‐stage stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select 5400 participants from rural permanent residents. A self‐designed structured questionnaire was used to investigate demographic data of the participants. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Function Assessment Scale (MoCA). The results were analyzed using chi‐square test, ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: A total of 5028 participants returned the survey, giving a response rate of 93.1%. Higher education (odds ratio (OR) = 3.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.87–3.54, p < 0.001), higher income (OR = 1.61, 95% CI 1.16–2.07, p < 0.001), and dietary control (OR = 0.66, 95%CI 0.34–0.98, p < 0.001) were protective factors. A visual representation of the relationship between annual income and MoCA score showed an inverted U‐curve, the group with an annual income of 6000–7999 RMB had a maximum OR of 1.93 (95%CI 0.12–2.74, p < 0.001). While difficulty in maintaining sleep were risk factors for cognitive impairment (OR = −2.28, 95% CI–4.18–0.39, p = 0.018). Conclusions: Participants with middle incomes had better cognitive status than those with the highest incomes. Higher education, proper diet control and good sleep are beneficial to the cognitive status of residents in rural areas. Carbon markets are crucial to attaining sustainable development objectives given the pressing need to cut greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. China is a key player in the fight against climate change since the country emits the most greenhouse emissions globally. In light of China's carbon markets, this study evaluates the risks and mitigation strategies related to financing carbon credit projects. Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy Viekriterijumsko Kompromisno Rangiranj (FVIKOR) methodologies are used to assess carbon finacing risks and strategies for the growth of China's carbon market. The FAHP method evaluated carbon credit financing risks and sub-risks, while the FVIKOR method prioritized mitigation strategies. The findings of the FAHP method show that regulatory and policy risks, financial risks, and operational risks are the major risks in the Chinese carbon markets. To mitigate these risks, prioritizing strategies based on FVIKOR suggests that developing stakeholder relationships, financial stability, and transparency would be a practical approach to achieving efficient, productive, and sustainable carbon markets in China. The present study aimed to identify biomarkers for the clinical diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a Chinese population using microarray data collected from the Gene Expression Omnibus database under accession number GSE97320. This included the peripheral blood samples of three patients with AMI and three controls. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the limma package and protein‑protein interaction networks were constructed using data from the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes database, followed by module analysis to screen for hub genes. Functional enrichment analyses were performed using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. The identified genes were verified by overlapping with the target genes of microRNAs (miRs) known to be associated with AMI, as well as the DEGs identified in other AMI datasets, including GSE24519, GSE34198 and GSE48060. As a result, 752 DEGs (449 upregulated and 303 downregulated) were identified in the GSE97320 dataset. The upregulated DEGs were predicted to participate in inflammatory pathways, including the toll‑like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway, including ras‑related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (RAC1), TLR4, C‑C motif chemokine receptor (CCR)1; cytokine‑cytokine receptor interaction, including signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)3; chemokine signaling pathway, including CCR10; pathways associated with cancer, including colony stimulating factor 3 receptor (CSF3R); and leukocyte transendothelial migration, including matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9). The downregulated DEGs were associated with the cell cycle, including alstrom syndrome protein 1 (ALMS1). These conclusions were made following functional analysis of the genes in the three identified modules. MMP9, TLR4, STAT3, CCR1 and ALMS1 were regulated by miR‑21‑5p, whereas RAC1 was regulated by miR‑30c‑5p. A comparison among the four datasets confirmed the roles of CSF3R and CCR10. HtrA serine peptidase 1 (HTRA1) was the only gene associated with both mortality and recurrence. In conclusion, inflammation‑associated genes, including STAT3, CCR1, RAC1, MMP9, CCR10, CSF3R and HTRA1, as well as cell cycle‑associated genes such as ALMS1, may be biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of AMI in Chinese people. The existing researches for leaf area index (LAI)-based Penman–Monteith evapotranspiration (ET) model (PML) are mostly carried out at yearly scale and the analysis of effects of seasonal change and different underlying surface conditions on model parameters is scarce. This study emphasizes on the influences of seasonal change and diverse land surface conditions on ET by optimizing the sensitive parameters, namely soil evaporation coefficient f and maximum stomatal conductance gsx, with particle swarm algorithm. This analysis is based on the observations of eight flux stations in China. The model performance is reasonable with a best Pearson r of 0.87. The seasonal calibration results indicate parameters change evidently in different seasons and have obvious spatial heterogeneity. The seasonal calibration method has an obvious effect on improving the ET accuracy in spring, which is mostly influenced by regional temperature and relative humidity. This study further demonstrates the need to dynamically adjust model parameters over time with PML model for evapotranspiration simulations, rather than simply setting these parameters to constants depended on subsurface conditions such as land use type. Carbon and water fluxes in ecosystems are tightly coupled by gas diffusion through stomata. However, carbon–water (C–W) relationships vary largely across time scales, vegetation types, and regions. Subtropical forests in China play an important role in the global carbon and water cycles, yet studies of C–W relationships in this region remain limited. Here, we investigated summer-time C–W relationships in this region at two subtropical sites: the evergreen broadleaved forest at Dinghushan (23.17° N, 112.53° E, 300 m) and the evergreen coniferous forest at Qianyanzhou (26.74° N, 115.06° W, 106 m), using the flux tower data from the FLUXNET2015. The C–W relationship was examined using two measures. The first was daily water use efficiency (WUE), which is the ratio of daily gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET). The second was the correlation coefficient (r) of hourly GPP and ET. Our analysis showed that the daily WUE in the two forests ranged over 4–14 mg CO2 per g H2O, higher in the coniferous forest than in the broadleaved forest. The mean values of r for hourly C–W coupling were similar at the two forests, being 0.5–0.6, which suggests asynchronous diurnal variations in GPP and ET. Both daily WUE and r were modulated by meteorological conditions. In general, high radiation, air temperature, and humidity can reduce WUE at both sites. For the broadleaved forest, the most influential factor on WUE was VPD, followed by radiation, while in the coniferous forest, VPD, air temperature, and radiation were almost equally important. For hourly C–W coupling, VPD plays a significant role. The drier the air is, the weaker the coupling in the two forests. The daily WUE and hourly C–W coupling reflect the C–W relationship from different perspectives. Both showed the strongest response to VPD but with different sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the current situation regarding fertility intentions, parenting attitudes, and fear of childbirth among college students in mainland China and the factors related to these variables. A cross-sectional study Colleges across China Five hundred and eighty-three college students attending regular institutions of higher education Fertility intentions and fear of childbirth were measured using the Swedish Fertility Awareness Questionnaire and the Childbirth Fear Prior to Pregnancy scale. Only 38.8% of participants expressed their willingness to have children, and there was a significant difference between male and female students (P <.02). Males regarded having children as more important (P <.01), and females were more concerned about the negative effects of becoming parents, including difficulties in the labor market, having less freedom, and having less money. When deciding whether to have children, factors such as work, economics, and childcare were more important to females. Students who did not want children had higher levels of fear of childbirth than those who wanted children or were unsure (P <.02). The fertility intentions of college students were not optimistic. In addition to the 2-child Chinese fertility policy, interventions aimed at reducing the cost of raising children, eliminating gender inequality in the workplace, and normalizing childcare institutions might help alleviate conflict between work and childrearing. Archaeal glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (isoGDGTs) and their hydroxylated derivatives (OH-GDGTs) have been increasingly applied to reconstruct past changes in lake temperature and lake-level using down-core sediments. However, a detailed examination of the distribution pattern of iso- and OH-GDGTs in lacustrine sediments is so far limited. To investigate the controls on the sedimentary GDGT distribution in lakes, we examined the archaeal GDGT distribution in surface sediments at different water depths from Lake Lugu, a deep alpine lake in southwest China. Our aim is to determine their distribution, sources and controlling factors. Based on the significant correlations between iso- and OH-GDGTs in deep-water sediments (> 20 m), we suggest that the main biological source of archaeal GDGTs in surface sediments is aquatic Group I.1a Thaumarchaeota (Nitrosoarchaeum). The depth-related variation of iso- and OH-GDGTs indicates that water depth is the main factor affecting the distribution of archaeal GDGTs in Lake Lugu, reflecting that Thaumarchaeota prefer to live in the deeper layer above the oxycline. This relationship leads to a positive correlation between %Cren, %OH-GDGTs, and Cren/Cren' with water depth, confirming their potential application for paleo-lake level reconstruction. Our study improves the understanding of the factors that control the archaeal GDGTs in a deep alpine lake and suggest that they might be used as lake-level indicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shidian is a recent meteorite which fell in Yunnan province, China, on November 27, 2017, and has been classified as a CM2 chondrite. Petrography, mineralogy, oxygen and chromium isotopic composition, reflectance spectrum, and density studies of Shidian are reported in this study. Clasts with different aqueous alteration degree, two type 1 clasts with nontypical CM petrography, and one metamorphic clast are observed in Shidian. Mineralogically, Shidian main body consists of phyllosilicates (∼70 vol%), forsterite (∼13 vol%), fayalitic olivine, carbonates, sulfide, high‐Ca pyroxene, magnetite framboids, and Fe‐Ni metal. The average electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) analytical totals of phyllosilicates are 84.07 ± 1.75 wt%, with average FeO/SiO2 of tochilinite–cronstedtite intergrowths (TCIs) in different clasts ranging from 1.18 to 3.29. The bulk geochemical composition is characterized by flat rare earth element pattern, and by depletion of highly volatile elements. The whole rock oxygen isotopic composition is −0.51 ± 0.73‰, 5.44 ± 1.01‰, and −3.38 ± 0.20‰ for δ17O, δ18O, and Δ17O, respectively, with bulk chromium isotopic composition as ε54Cr = 1.00 ± 0.11. The grain density, bulk density, and porosity are 2.758 ± 0.008 g cm−3, 2.500 ± 0.004 g cm−3, and 9.37 ± 0.59%, respectively. The reflectance spectrum shows "blue" (negative) continuum slope across the visible and near‐infrared range, with characteristic absorption features (such as 0.765, 0.923, and 1.160 μm for phyllosilicates). These characteristics indicate that Shidian is an unheated, brecciated CM chondrite and may be an analog of asteroid Bennu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Caliciviruses that cause diarrhea have been reported in both industrial and developing countries, including China, in recent years. Here, we report the complete genome of a porcine calicivirus strain, Ah-1, which is prevalent in swine groups in Anhui Province. This viral genome is 7,342 nucleotides (nt) long, excluding the poly(A) of the 3' end, which is 202 nt shorter in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) than that of the other Chinese porcine calicivirus strain (Ch-sw-savl; GenBank accession number FJ387164), previously isolated in the Shanghai area, China, though they shared 98.8% sequence identity over the whole genome excluding the 202-nt-shorter region. Foliar stable nitrogen (N) isotopes (δ15N) generally reflect N availability to plants and have been used to infer about changes thereof. However, previous studies of temporal trends in foliar δ15N have ignored the influence of confounding factors, leading to uncertainties on its indication to N availability. In this study, we measured foliar δ15N of 1811 herbarium specimens from 12 plant species collected in southern China forests from 1920 to 2010. We explored how changes in atmospheric CO2, N deposition and global warming have affected foliar δ15N and N concentrations ([N]) and identified whether N availability decreased in southern China. Across all species, foliar δ15N significantly decreased by 0.82‰ over the study period. However, foliar [N] did not decrease significantly, implying N homeostasis in forest trees in the region. The spatiotemporal patterns of foliar δ15N were explained by mean annual temperature (MAT), atmospheric CO2 (PCO2), atmospheric N deposition, and foliar [N]. The spatiotemporal trends of foliar [N] were explained by MAT, temperature seasonality, PCO2, and N deposition. N deposition within the rates from 5.3 to 12.6 kg N ha−1 year−1 substantially contributed to the temporal decline in foliar δ15N. The decline in foliar δ15N was not accompanied by changes in foliar [N] and therefore does not necessarily reflect a decline in N availability. Both paleoclimatic change and anthropogenic habitat destruction can have adverse effects on species demography and, in turn, could lead a species towards being endangered and rare. Understanding the relative importance of these natural and anthropogenic factors driving species endangerment and rarity is thus crucial for effective conservation planning but remains elusive. Here, we examine the phylogeography and demographic history of an endangered conifer species in China, Torreya jackii Chun, and assess the relative importance of natural and anthropogenic factors that might have put the species in its endangered state. We collected tissue samples from all the 13 extant wild populations, and analyzed the genetic variation using eight nuclear microsatellites and four chloroplast and one mitochondrial DNA fragments. We found low genetic and nucleotide diversities, which could explain the absence of spatial and phylogeographic structure. Using a hierarchical approximate Bayesian computation technique, we identified the demographic scenario that best fits the genetic data and found that effective population size was low at least 200 000 years ago but expanded after the last glacial maximum (LGM). The paleoclimatic niche model revealed a profound effect of precipitation on the distribution of T. jackii and predicted that the current distribution areas were suitable during the LGM. Despite the post‐LGM expansion, the best‐supported scenario showed a dramatic population collapse during the past 300 years, when anthropogenic disturbances also increased dramatically. Overall, our study sheds light on how historical factors and human impacts jointly threaten the persistence of a species, and these aspects should be duly considered in species conservation planning. Taking China's first application of domestic shield tunneling in a water-rich sand layer for crossing a high-speed railway as research background, the influence of changes in the shield tunneling parameters on ground settlement is analyzed based on field tests, and a construction control method suitable for shield tunneling under a risk source in a water-rich sand layer is proposed. The test results show that the use of 10% sodium bentonite as the soil modifier for soil pressure balance shield tunneling into the water-rich sand layer has advantages, while adding 50% loess into the bentonite slurry in the gravel sand layer can greatly improve the impermeability of the soil; the settlement of soil can be effectively reduced by using the special segment with grouting holes for deep grouting and applying the adaptive transformation of the shield cutter. Based on the statistical analysis results, a reasonable range for the cutter head torque, cutter head speed, chamber pressure, bentonite injection volume, and advanced speed in the water-rich sand layer can provide a construction control basis for similar projects and provide data support for the compilation of relevant specifications. This investigation delves into the utilization of tremolite, a rare mineral, as a pottery temper for cooking vessels of the late Neolithic lower Yangtze Liangzhu culture. Raman spectroscopy analysis of 165 mineral-tempered pottery sherds from the Dazemiao site revealed that tremolite was the predominant tempering material for tripods (ding), whereas a mixture of feldspar and quartz was used for open-topped vats (da-kou-gang). SEM images indicate that the tremolite temper exhibits relatively coarse fiber structure, corresponding to one of the nephrite materials used for the Liangzhu jade. It is suggested that the Liangzhu miners reallocated materials according to nephrite quality, formulating different product lines, including different types of jade objects and pottery temper. Additionally, the utilization of tremolite temper persisted throughout the entire Liangzhu culture. The presence of tremolite-tempered pottery in regions without indigenous tremolite mines necessitated robust logistical networks for the transportation of these bulky materials. The quantities and composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) are important factors in the planning and management of MSW. Daily human activities were classified into three groups: maintenance activities (meeting the basic needs of food, housing and personal care, MA); subsistence activities (providing the financial support requirements, SA); and leisure activities (social and recreational pursuits, LA). A model, based on the interrelationships of expenditure on consumer goods, time distribution, daily activities, residents groups, and waste generation, was employed to estimate MSW generation by different activities and resident groups in five provinces (Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hebei, Henan and Sichuan) of China. These five provinces were chosen for this study and the distribution patterns of MSW generated by different activities and resident groups were revealed. The results show that waste generation in SA and LA fluctuated slightly from 2003 to 2008. For general waste generation in the five provinces, MA accounts for more than 70% of total MSW, SA approximately 10%, and LA between 10% and 16% by urban residents in 2008. Females produced more daily MSW than males in MA. Males produced more daily MSW than females in SA and LA. The wastes produced at weekends in MA and LA were far greater than on weekdays, but less than on weekdays for SA wastes. Furthermore, one of the model parameters (the waste generation per unit of consumer expenditure) is inversely proportional to per-capita disposable income of urban residents. As a world-class tin–tungsten province, South China is well known for its extensive Mesozoic granitic magmatism. The Dulong district, located in the western Cathaysia Block of the South China tin–tungsten province, is characterized by widespread Mesozoic granitoids and accompanying Sn-polymetallic ore deposit (~ 30 Mt of Sn). It is one of the most important polymetallic tin ore districts in China. In this study, three mineralization-related granite types were identified in the Dulong district, including the Dulong coarse-grained granite (DCG), the Dulong fine-grained granite (DFG), and the Dulong porphyritic granite (DPG). Detailed studies are presented on zircon U–Pb ages, major and trace elements, mineral chemical and Nd–Hf isotopic compositions of the tin-bearing granites from the Dulong district. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating of zircon grains from these three granite bodies yields ages of 90.1 ± 0.7 Ma, 89.7 ± 0.8 Ma and 86.0 ± 0.5 Ma, respectively. Geochemically, the granites are strongly peraluminous, with high contents of alkalis, enrichment in P, Li, Rb, Cs, Ta, Sn, W and U, depletion in Ti, Mg, Co, Ni, Sr, Ba, Zr, Hf, Th and rare earth elements. Fractional crystallization of plagioclase and K-feldspar was the principal process of magmatic differentiation that controlled Rb, Sr, Ba and Eu concentrations, whereas rare earth elements were fractionated by accessory minerals, such as apatite and monazite. The geochemical data suggest that the rocks are highly fractionated S-type granites. The granites show bulk rock ε Nd (t) values in the range of − 12.2 to − 10.8 and zircon ε Hf (t) values from − 15.5 to − 2.5, with Meso-Paleoproterozoic T DM C ages for both Nd and Hf isotopes. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest that these highly fractionated S-type granites DCG, DFG and DPG were originated from the same episode of partial melting of the protolith, which have analogous components of metamorphosed pelitic rocks from the Meso-Paleoproterozoic continental crust. Extreme fractional crystallization resulted in enrichment of tin in the evolved granitic magma, and the reduced magmas (fO 2 below NNO) would efficiently remove Sn into a hydrothermal fluid, and lead to deposition of Sn-rich mineral phases. The association of Dulong and Gejiu magmatism in the western Cathaysia Block may be likely to mark the onset of back-arc extension or intra-arc rift in the region during Late Cretaceous. Urban light rail transit systems have a significant potential to alter future urban development. We developed a new cellular automata model (CACG) based on conjugate gradients, and applied it to 1) simulate historical urban development at Jinhua of China, and 2) project future development scenarios incorporating the effect of future light rail transit stations (LRTS). The model produced a realistic urban pattern for 2018 with overall accuracy exceeding 95%, Kappa coefficient exceeding 70% and figure-of-merit exceeding 32%, indicating the model's ability to accurately capture urban dynamics. We predicted three different scenarios: a benchmark scenario of business as usual (BAU), a scenario focusing on LRTS, and an individual-factor-based scenario (ILRTS). The results show that the annual urban development intensity has the strongest correlation with LRT stations for LRTS-scenario, followed by ILRTS-scenario and BAU-scenario. • ECs mounted on WPCBs are profiled for materials and toxicity. • Higher contents of precious metals are found in ECs than PWBs. • New toxic threats from As and Se are found. Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) contain valuable material resources and hazardous substances, thereby posing a challenge for sustainable resource recovery and environmental protection initiatives. Overcoming this challenge will require mapping the toxic footprint of WPCBs to specific materials and substances used in manufacturing electronic components (ECs). Therefore, this work collected 50 EC specimens from WPCBs in five ubiquitous consumer products, such as television, refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine and computer. The work extracted and analyzed metal contents and used leachability assessments based on tests adopted by the regulatory policies from China and the United States. The work found that copper and iron are the most abundant constituents in ECs, with concentrations ranging 5.90–796.62 g/kg and 0–831.53 g/kg, respectively; whereas abundance of precious metal content is in the order of silver > gold > palladium > platinum, with silver concentration ranging 15–5290 mg/kg. The content of marginally-regulated toxic substance arsenic ranged 0–9700 mg/kg; whereas fully regulated toxic metals such as chromium, lead and mercury did not exceed the thresholds set by China and US standards. The work found new toxic threats from arsenic and selenium leached from 20 of 50 ECs exceeding regulatory standards. These results will aid manufacturers and recyclers in protecting workers' health and environmental quality from arsenic and selenium pollution, and should initiate discussion about regulating these toxic components as part of a comprehensive program to reduce the toxic footprint of electronic products. The photometric properties of the uppermost lunar regolith are used in the spectroscopic study. China's Chang'E‐5 (CE‐5) mission successfully landed in the Northern Oceanus Procellarum of the Moon, carrying the scientific payload lunar mineralogical spectrometer (LMS). LMS performed full‐view scanning and obtained the reflectance spectra in various geometric configurations. The photometric properties, including the single‐scattering albedo ω and two parameters of the Henyey‐Greenstein phase function (b, c), were derived. Our modeling results showed weak backward scattering and strong forward scattering properties of the regolith at the CE‐5 landing site. Meanwhile, the asymmetry parameter (−b×c) $(-b\times c)$ indicates that CE‐5 regolith has weaker forward scattering than the Apollo lunar soil samples and the regolith at the Chang'E‐4 landing site. The derived Hapke parameters can be used for comparison with that of the returned lunar sample, supporting further studies of lunar spectroscopy, and can be the ground truth of the CE‐5 landing area. Plain Language Summary: The in‐situ mineral compositions of the lunar regolith can be retrieved using spectral observations with known photometric properties of the lunar surface. The lunar mineralogical spectrometer installed on the Chang'E‐5 lander conducted in‐situ full‐view scanning, and obtained many spectral data. As a hyperspectral imager aboard the orbiter "HX-1" of China's first Mars mission, the Mars Mineralogical Spectrometer (MMS) is designed with hyperspectral and multispectral operation modes to survey the mineral types and their distribution on the surface of Mars, and to study the overall chemical composition and evolution history of Mars. The multispectral modes of MMS are different from hyperspectral modes on the bands selection, spatial and spectral resolution, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) etc. So the spectral detection capability of each mode of MMS is also different. The ground validation experiment of MMS is conducted to evaluate the hyperspectral and multispectral data quality and detection capabilities. The main conclusions include: (1) The measured hyperspectra of typical mineral samples obtained by MMS agree well with the data acquired by the Standard Comparison Spectrometers (SCS) under the same measurement conditions, and the spectral uncertainty between MMS and SCS is less than 7% in the key spectral ranges (0.7 ∼ 2.2 μm ). For some typical minerals, the absorption band positions deviation between MMS and SCS are within 0.69 ∼ 14.86 nm , which are within the spectral resolution limits of MMS. (2) The six sets of band combinations designed for MMS multispectral modes are slightly superior to CRISM's multispectral mode in terms of spectral resolutions and bands selection, the water-containing minerals will be more accurately distinguished and identified, such as montmorillonite and kaolinite. Besides, the SNR of each multispectral mode is greater than 400 in the 500–2600 nm spectral range, which meets the requirements for the subtle spectral characteristics of water-containing minerals. (3) Benefiting from the MMS ground validation experiment and the experience of the OMEGA and CRISM, it is recommended that MMS first adopt the spatial continuous 52-sample or 104-sample (spatial resolution is about 0.53 ∼ 1.06 km ) multispectral operation mode for typical minerals global mapping and finding target areas of interest. Then the 208-sample multispectral mode (spatial resolution is about ∼ 265 m ) or 26-sample hyperspectral mode can be used to survey target areas of interest for the subtle mineral types characteristics and distribution. n -Alkanes have been widely used to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental variations in lacustrine environments. However, for robust reconstructions, improving the understanding of the origin of n -alkanes and their distribution within the lake is essential. Therefore, we examined the distribution pattern of n -alkanes in the aquatic plants within Lake Lugu (a deep alpine lake on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, southwest China), and terrestrial plants and topsoils in the catchment, to unravel the origin of sedimentary n -alkanes and further investigate the spatial distribution of n -alkanes from surface sediments in this lake. The aquatic plants are dominated by mid-chain C 23 and C 25 , terrestrial plants and soils by long-chain C 29 , and 76% of the surface sediment samples show C 29 predominance. The average chain length (ACL) and the aquatic plant proxy (P aq) values of surface sediments are between those of aquatic and terrestrial plants and soils. Thus, n -alkanes from autochthonous (aquatic plants) and allochthonous (terrestrial plants and soils) sources were apparent in the surface sediments. A substantial spatial distribution of n -alkanes exists within Lake Lugu: the n -alkane concentrations of total, aquatic, and terrigenous origins are concentrated in the northwestern portion of the lake's north basin, which may be attributed to the underwater topography and increased human-induced soil erosion in this area. Similarly, the clear spatial heterogeneity of ACL 21 – 33 and P aq may suggest that the sedimentary n -alkanes comprise a mixture contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous production, which might be the major source of n -alkanes in the lakeshore, and a higher proportion of autochthonous n -alkanes is present in deep water. However, there is no significant correlation between the P aq of sediments and water depth in Lake Lugu; thus, the application of P aq as a lake-level indicator should be used with caution in deep-water lakes similar to Lake Lugu. Abstract: Residential energy consumptions of both electricity and fuels are associated with emissions of many air pollutants. Temporally and spatially resolved energy consumption data are scarce in China, which are critical for a better understanding of their environmental impacts. In this study, a space-for-time substitution method was proposed and two models for predicting fuel and electricity consumptions in residential sector of China were developed using provincial data. It was found that fuel consumption was not directly proportional to heating degree day and was also affected by heating day, defined as the number of days when heating is required in a year. The models were validated against a set of historical annual data and two sets of survey data on seasonal variations. The models were applied to predict spatial and temporal variations of residential energy consumptions and emissions of various pollutants and to predict net effects of climate warming on energy consumptions and pollutant emissions. The emissions of black carbon (BC), carbon monoxide (CO), and polycyclic aromatic carbons (PAHs) in winter were significantly higher than those in other seasons. For the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxides (NO x ), there were two peaks in winter and summer, with the latter increasing gradually over years. It was predicted that per-capita residential energy consumptions would reach 0.43, 0.33, and 0.26toe/cap in 2050 for IPCC scenarios of A1B, B1, and A2, respectively. Climate warming in the future would lead to less residential fuel but more electricity consumptions. Consequently, emissions of BC, CO, and PAHs would decrease mainly in cold climate zones, while emissions of CO2, SO2, and NOx would increase largely in southeast China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Dispersal that unites spatially subdivided populations into a metapopulation with source–sink dynamics is crucial for species persistence in fragmented landscapes. Understanding such dynamics for pollinators is particularly urgent owing to the ongoing global pollination crisis. Here, we investigated the population structure and source–sink dynamics of a pollinating wasp (Wiebesia sp. 3) of Ficus pumila in the Zhoushan Archipelago of China. We found significant asymmetry in the pairwise migrant numbers for 22 of 28 cases on the historical timescale, but only two on the contemporary timescale. Despite a small population size, the sole island not colonized by a superior competitor wasp (Wiebesia sp. 1) consistently behaved as a net exporter of migrants, supplying large sinks. Comparable levels of genetic diversity, with few private alleles and low genetic differentiation (total Fst: 0.03; pairwise Fst: 0.0005–0.0791), were revealed among all the islands. There was a significant isolation‐by‐distance pattern caused mainly by migration between the competition‐free island and other islands, otherwise the pattern was negligible. The clustering analysis failed to detect multiple gene pools for the whole region. Thus, the sinks were most probably organized into a patchy population. Moreover, the estimates of effective population sizes were comparable between the two timescales. Thus the source–sink dynamics embedded within a well‐connected population network may allow Wiebesia sp. 3 to persist at a competitive disadvantage. This study provides evidence that metapopulations in the real world may be complicated and changeable over time, highlighting the necessity to study such metapopulations in detail. Halophilic Archaea are widely distributed globally in hypersaline environments. However, little is known of how dominant halophilic archaeal genera are distributed across environments and how they may co-associate across ecosystems. Here, the archaeal community composition and diversity from hypersaline environments (> 300 g/L salinity; total of 33 samples) in the Qaidam Basin of China were investigated using high-throughput Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. The archaeal communities (total of 3,419 OTUs) were dominated by the class Halobacteria (31.7–99.6% relative abundances) within the phylum Euryarchaeota (90.8–99.9%). Five predominant taxa, including Halorubrum, Halobacterium, Halopenitus, Methanothrix, and Halomicrobium, were observed across most samples. However, several distinct genera were associated with individual samples and were inconsistently distributed across samples, which contrast with previous studies of hypersaline archaeal communities. Additionally, co-occurrence network analysis indicated that five network clusters were present and potentially reflective of interspecies interactions among the environments, including three clusters (clusters II, III, and IV) comprising halophilic archaeal taxa within the Halobacteriaceae and Haloferacaceae families. In addition, two other clusters (clusters I and V) were identified that comprised methanogens. Finally, salinity comprising ionic concentrations (in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+) and pH were most correlated with taxonomic distributions across sample sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Host specificity of phytophagous insects plays a critical role in the maintenance of plant diversity. However, a lack of approaches to identify the larvae of phytophagous insects, which usually have similar morphology, can lead to misinterpretation of their host ranges.Acorn weevils are seed‐exploiting parasites of Fagaceae species, a dominant plant group in subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forests (EBLFs). Therefore, variation in their host specificity may profoundly influence plant diversity in this ecosystem.Here, we collected larvae of acorn weevils from 36 655 seeds of Fagaceae species in EBLFs in southeastern China and performed multiple operational taxonomic unit (OTU) delimitation analyses using one mitochondrial (COI) and two nuclear (ArgK and EF1‐α) genes to reveal species composition of acorn weevils and assess the variation in host specificity among OTUs.We analysed the DNA barcoding sequences from 478 larvae and 4 adults of acorn weevils sampled from 17 common Fagaceae species (five genera) and detected 11 OTUs. Moreover, host range varied drastically among different OTUs, with Curculio bimaculatus being the most generalised.Our results revealed high diversity of acorn weevils and that strong variation in host specificity can even exist among OTUs in the same genus, addressing the need to distinguish different Curculio species before conducting forest management in EBLFs. Severe malnutrition evaluated by patient-generated subjective global assessment results in poor outcome among adult patients with acute leukemia: a retrospective cohort study. Background: An unmet need for more effective and affordable kinase inhibitors remains in patients with progressive radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC) in China, where only sorafenib is approved for this indication. This study evaluated the 24-week objective response rate (ORR) to donafenib—a new, domestic multikinase inhibitor—in the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic RAIR-DTC in patients with measurable lesions. Two dose regimens (300 mg twice daily vs. 200 mg twice daily) were used to determine its optimal dosage and safety for further phase III studies. Methods: This study was a randomized, open-label, multicenter phase II trial. Thirty-five adult RAIR-DTC patients with at least one measurable targeted lesion according to RECIST 1.1 were enrolled from 12 centers in China and randomized to receive either 200 mg (17 patients) or 300 mg (18 patients) of donafenib orally twice daily for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was ORR, and the secondary endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS) among others. Additionally, biochemical (serum thyroglobulin) and structural (total tumor diameter [TTD]) responses were assessed, change (ΔTTD) rates were calculated, and safety was evaluated. Results: The ORRs for the 200- and 300-mg arms were 12.5% and 13.33% (p = 1.000), respectively. The 300-mg arm had a nonsignificant, longer median PFS than the 200-mg arm (14.98 months vs. 9.44 months) (p = 0.351). There was a trend toward more tumor shrinkage in the 300-mg arm compared with the 200-mg arm (average ΔTTD rate −0.52 ± 0.71 vs. −0.04 ± 1.55 mm/month, p = 0.103). Most treatment-related adverse events (AEs) in both arms were grades 1–2. The most common grade 3 treatment-related AEs in both arms were palmar–plantar erythrodysesthesia and hypertension; the sum occurrence rates of these two AEs in the 200-mg and 300-mg arms were 11.43% and 22.86%, respectively. Conclusions: Donafenib was generally well tolerated. Both donafenib regimens demonstrated similar efficacy in terms of the ORR in locally advanced or metastatic RAIR-DTC. The Mars Mineralogical Spectrometer (MMS) is a hyperspectral imager onboard the Mars orbiter of Tianwen-1, China's first Mars exploration mission. MMS consists of 4 subassemblies: an Optical Sensor Unit (OSU), an Electronics Unit (EU), a Calibration Unit (CU), and a Thermal Control Accessories (TCA). With a 0.5 mrad IFOV and a 416-sample cell array for nadir observation, MMS can map the spectral and spatial information of the Martian surface through push-broom scanning, and it can transmit scientific data by hyperspectral mode or multispectral imaging mode through spatial and spectral combination. MMS can perform multi-sample hyperspectral imaging at full spectral resolution (0.379–1.076 μm with 2.73 nm/band, 1.033–3.425 μm at 7.5 nm/band, both spectral ranges at 2.1 km/pixel at 265 km). For the wavelength region of interest, the multispectral mapping mode provides additional options, a subset of 72 bands that are binned to minimum pixel footprints of 265 m/pixel. Feeding a low-protein diet can enhance urea reabsorption and transfer to the rumen, which might alter microbial protein (MCP) synthesis and redirect molecular hydrogen (H 2) flow away from methanogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of feeding goats a low-protein diet on urea nitrogen (N) salvage and metabolism, and consequence on H 2 metabolism for MCP synthesis and methanogenesis. Goats (Xiangdong Black goats, a local breed in southern China,) with body weight of 20.4 ± 2.15 kg (mean ± SD) were fed a control diet (consisted of 70% rice straw and 30% concentrates, with crude protein [CP] content by 108 g kg−1) or a low-protein diet (55.2 g CP/kg). 15NH 4 Cl and 2H 2 were employed to further confirm the incorporation of N and hydrogen for MCP synthesis through in vitro culture. Feeding a low-protein diet resulted in greater proportion of retained N (+156%, P < 0.05), plasma urea N (+81.9%, P < 0.05) or rumen ammonia-N (+125%, P < 0.001) relative to digested N and greater renal urea N reabsorption (+11.2%, P < 0.05), together with upregulated relative protein expression of urea transporter A (UTA) in the kidneys (P < 0.05) and mRNA expression of UTA in rumen epithelium (P < 0.05). Feeding low-protein diet resulted in greater concentration of rumen dissolved hydrogen (+55.6%, P < 0.05), ratio of MCP to ammonia-N (+17.6%, P < 0.05), and lower enteric methane emissions (g/kg digested DM, −18.5%, P < 0.05). Further, in vitro experiments verified that the addition of NH 4 Cl decreased methane and hydrogen production (P < 0.001), although only a minor quantity of headspace 2H 2 gas was incorporated for MCP synthesis. In conclusions, feeding a low-protein diet to goats enhances renal urea reabsorption capacity and facilitates the rumen microbial hydrogen incorporation for MCP synthesis, leading to enhanced N retention efficiency and reduced methane emissions. Haze pollution in recent decades varies largely with both pollutant emissions and meteorological conditions. Using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method, we separate these two influences on haze variations in southern China in the time series of haze observations from 1981 to 2011. This helps us to identify the meteorological influence on interannual variation in haze occurrences in southern China and thus observe a teleconnection between the thermal forcing of sea surface temperature (SST) in the central and eastern Pacific and wintertime haze occurrences in southern China (R = − 0.51, p < 0.05). The total haze days in winter is highest among all seasons over southern China and the climotological mean of number of winter haze days is 7.5 days for the region. Compared with the normal winters, the regional mean of the number of haze days in southern China is reduced by ~ 5 days in the winters with above-normal Niño3.4 SST (during El Niño phases), but increased by ~ 4 days in the winters with below-normal Niño3.4 SST (during La Niña phases). In the warm SST winters, the cumulative consequences of strong winds, more precipitation, and a more unstable atmosphere with an "upper colder and lower warmer" vertical pattern leading to more ascendance can all hinder haze formation, whereas in the cold SST winters, opposite meteorological conditions are favorable to haze formation. These meteorological conditions induced by anomalous SST make wintertime haze pollution in southern China vary from year to year to a large extent. The COVID-19 pandemic is currently spreading widely around the world, causing huge threats to public safety and global society. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal pattern of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, reveals China's epicenters of the pandemic through spatial clustering, and delineates the substantial effect of distance to Wuhan on the pandemic spread. The results show that the daily new COVID-19 cases mostly occurred in and around Wuhan before March 6, and then moved to the Grand Bay Area (Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau). The total COVID-19 cases in China were mainly distributed in the east of the Huhuanyong Line, where the epicenters accounted for more than 60% of the country's total in/on 24 January and 7 February, half in/on 31 January, and more than 70% from 14 February. The total cases finally stabilized at approximately 84,000, and the inflection point for Wuhan was on 14 February, one week later than those of Hubei (outside Wuhan) and China (outside Hubei). The generalized additive model-based analysis shows that population density and distance to provincial cities were significantly associated with the total number of the cases, while distances to prefecture cities and intercity traffic stations, and population inflow from Wuhan after 24 January, had no strong relationships with the total number of cases. The results and findings should provide valuable insights for understanding the changes in the COVID-19 transmission as well as implications for controlling the global COVID-19 pandemic spread. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the present situation and risk factors for the misdiagnosis of osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH), providing the basis for accurate diagnosis of ONFH. Methods: For this retrospective study, 1471 patients with ONFH were selected from the China Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head Database (CONFHD). These patients had been recruited between July 2016 and December 2018. According to whether or not they were misdiagnosed, the patients were divided into two groups, with 1168 cases (22–84 years old) included in the diagnosis group and 303 cases (21–80 years old) in the misdiagnosis group. Misdiagnosis was measured using the following criteria: (i) the patient had the same symptoms and signs, and the second diagnosis was not consistent with the initial diagnosis within 6 months; and (ii) the patient was admitted to a hospital participating in CONFHD and the previous diagnosis was inconsistent with the diagnosis given by the expert group. Comparisons of age, visual analogue scale for pain, and body mass index between the two groups were performed using a t‐test. Gender, causes of ONFH, primary diseases requiring corticosteroids, methods of corticosteroid use, corticosteroid species, type of trauma, onset side of the disease, pain side, whether symptoms are hidden, and type of imaging examination at the initial visit were compared using the χ2‐test. Years of alcohol consumption, weekly alcohol consumption, and physician title at the initial visit were compared using a Mann–Whitney U‐test. Furthermore, the statistically significant factors were evaluated using multiple regression analysis to investigate the risk factors of misdiagnosis. Results: A total of 303 patients (20.6%) were misdiagnosed: 118 cases were misdiagnosed as lumbar disc herniation, 86 cases as hip synovitis, 48 cases as hip osteoarthritis, 32 cases as rheumatoid arthritis, 11 cases as piriformis syndrome, 5 cases as sciatica, and 3 cases as soft‐tissue injury. Whether symptoms are hidden (P = 0.038, odds ratio [OR] = 1.546, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.025–2.332), physician title at the initial visit (P < 0.001, OR = 3.324, 95% CI = 1.850–5.972), X‐ray examination (P < 0.001, OR = 4.742, 95% CI = 3.159–7.118), corticosteroids (P < 0.001, OR = 0.295, 95% CI = 0.163–0.534), alcohol (P < 0.001, OR = 0.305, 95% CI = 0.171–0.546), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination (P = 0.042, OR = 0.649, 95% CI = 0.427–0.985) were each found to be associated with misdiagnosis. Conclusion: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is easily misdiagnosed as lumbar disc herniation, hip synovitis, hip osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Patient history of corticosteroid use or alcohol abuse and MRI examination at the initial diagnosis may be protective factors for misdiagnosis. Hidden symptoms, physician title at the initial visit (as attending doctor or resident doctor), and only X‐ray examination at the initial diagnosis may be risk factors for misdiagnosis. Hypersaline lakes and saltern areas are important industrial and biodiversity resources in the Qaidam Basin of China that reside at > 2600 m asl. Most hypersaline environments in this area are characterized by saturated salinity (~ 300 g/L salinity), nearly neutral pH, intense ultraviolet radiation, and extremely variable temperature fluctuations. The core bacterial communities associated with these stressful environments have nevertheless remained uninvestigated. 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing analyses revealed that the bacterial communities were dominated by core lineages including the Proteobacteria (39.4–64.6%) and the Firmicutes (17.0–42.7%). However, the relative abundances of common lineages, and especially the five most abundant taxa of Pseudomonas, Lactococcus, Anoxybacillus, Acinetobacter, and Brevundimonas, were highly variable across communities and closely associated with hypersaline characteristics in the samples. Network analysis revealed the presence of co-occurrence high relative abundance taxa (cluster I) that were highly correlated across all hypersaline samples. Additionally, temperature, total organic carbon, K+, and Mg2+ correlated highest with taxonomic distributions across communities. Objective: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a severe infectious respiratory disease, the burden of which remains high in China. To provide scientific evidence for developing more targeted prevention and control strategies, this study aimed to determine the incidence trends and explore the epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary TB in Anhui Province, Eastern China between 2013 and 2018. Methods: The retrospective study analyzed information regarding pulmonary TB cases reported by the National Infectious Disease Reporting System and census data collected from the Anhui Provincial Bureau of Statistics. Results: Overall, 211,892 cases of TB patients were reported in Anhui Province, China between 2013 and 2018, with an average annual reported incidence rate of 57.7 per 100,000 persons. A significant decrease in the incidence rate of pulmonary TB (p < 0.001) was observed during the study period. Men had a higher incidence rate of pulmonary TB than women (p < 0.001). The highest annual average reported incidence rate was 204.2 per 100,000 persons in those aged 70–74 years. The number of farmers with pulmonary TB, i.e., 155,415, accounted for 73.4% of all cases. Moreover, the peak period of reported cases was from January to March. Four cities along the Yangtze River—Anqing, Tongling, Chizhou, and Wuhu—reported significantly higher incidence rates of pulmonary TB than other cities (p < 0.001). Conclusions: From 2013 to 2018, there was a significant decline in the incidence rate of pulmonary TB in Anhui Province, with peaks occurring from January to March. Background: The reported incidence of dengue fever increased dramatically in recent years in China. This study aimed to investigate and to assess the effectiveness of intervention implemented in a dengue outbreak in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China. Methods: Data of a dengue outbreak were collected in Ningbo City in China by a field epidemiological survey according to a strict protocol and case definition. Serum specimens of all cases were collected for diagnosis and the virological characteristics were detected by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene sequencing. Vector surveillance was implemented during the outbreak to collect the larva and adult mosquito densities to calculate the Breteau Index (BI) and human biting rate (HBR), respectively. Data of monthly BI and light-trap density in 2018 were built to calculate the seasonality of the vector. A transmission mathematical model was developed to dynamic the incidence of the disease. The parameters of the model were estimated by the data of the outbreak and vector surveillance data in 2018. The effectiveness of the interventions implemented during the outbreak was assessed by the data and the modelling. Results: From 11 August to 8 September, 2018, a dengue outbreak was reported with 27 confirmed cases in a population of 5536-people community (community A) of Ningbo City. Whole E gene sequences were obtained from 24 cases and were confirmed as dengue virus type 1 (DENV-1). The transmission source of the outbreak was origin from community B where a dengue case having the same E gene sequence was onset on 30 July. Aedes albopictus was the only vector species in the area. The value of BI and HBR was 57.5 and 12 per person per hour respectively on 18 August, 2018 and decreased dramatically after interventions. The transmission model fitted well (χ2 = 6.324, P = 0.388) with the reported cases data. With no intervention, the total simulated number of the cases would be 1728 with a total attack rate (TAR) of 31.21% (95%CI: 29.99%– 32.43%). Case isolation and larva control (LC) have almost the same TAR and duration of outbreak (DO) as no intervention. Different levels of reducing HBR (rHBR) had different effectiveness with TARs ranging from 1.05% to 31.21% and DOs ranging from 27 days to 102 days. Adult vector control (AVC) had a very low TAR and DO. "LC+AVC" had a similar TAR and DO as that of AVC. "rHBR100%+LC", "rHBR100%+AVC", "rHBR100%+LC+AVC" and "rHBR100%+LC+AVC+Iso" had the same effectiveness. Conclusions: Without intervention, DENV-1 could be transmitted rapidly within a short period of time and leads to high attack rate in community in China. AVC or rHBR should be recommended as primary interventions to control rapid transmission of the dengue virus at the early stage of an outbreak. The use of microwave radiation data collected by lunar orbiters to infer the lunar brightness-temperature (TB) distribution is of great importance to lunar scientific exploration. The TB data acquired by China's Chang'E-2 passive microwave radiometer (MRM) is one of the basic materials for lunar temperature mapping. Core issues of lunar microwave TB mapping include data fitting at different latitudes, outlier removal, and integrated spatial interpolation considering influencing factors. We applied a third-order Fourier function to fit the lunar TB data, which effectively removes outliers considering the fitting characteristic and three-sigma rule (FCTSR). Because the lunar surface temperature is influenced by a variety of factors such as topography and albedo, we then built a multi-factor co-kriging interpolation method to perform lunar TB mapping accurately. The cross-validation shows that, in terms of the mean-absolute-error and root-mean-square-error, the multi-factor co-kriging interpolation improves the mapping accuracy by 30%–60% compared to inverse distance interpolation and ordinary kriging interpolation. The analysis shows that topography and albedo are the most important factors influencing the lunar TB, and the TB maps at 37 GHz reveal cold spots that can be considered as younger craters. It is concluded that the proposed data fitting, denoising and spatial interpolation methods significantly improve the lunar TB mapping. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) is an economically important vegetable crop that is widely cultivated in the tropics for its nutritional properties. There are concerns, though, that in China, commercial okra production is at risk from an emerging leaf blight disease, that has been recently observed in Fujian Province. Fungi were isolated from diseased okra leaves collected in 2016 and 89 fungal isolates were tentatively identified as Choanephora cucurbitarum based on cultural and sporangia characters. DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) of the rRNA gene from two representative isolates (C6 and C7) were 99% identical to those of C. cucurbitarum obtained from NCBI. Phylogenetic analysis based on the ITS sequences showed that C6 and C7 clustered with C. cucurbitarum. All 89 fungal isolates were found to be pathogenic to okra leaves. We provide the first confirmation that, based on morphological, pathogenicity and phylogenetic analyses, the causal agent of leaf blight of okra in China was C. cucurbitarum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The worldwide decline of wetland ecosystems calls for an urgent reassessment of their current status from a resilience perspective. Understanding the trajectories of changes that have produced the current situation is fundamental for assessing system resilience. Here, we examine long-term dynamics of wetland ecosystem change by reviewing paleoecological records from 11 representative lakes in China. We identify unprecedented change in alga communities in the context of last two centuries. Striking ecological shifts have occurred in all lakes, yet with spatial and temporal differences. The long-term trajectories of change in diatom species composition and structure indicate gradually eroded system resilience. These ecological shifts were shaped by socio-economic activities as China transformed from a rural agricultural to an industrialized society within the last several decades, during which multiple drivers have accumulated and acted synergistically. The balance between ecosystem and society, which appeared to exist for thousands of years, was broken by increasing population, new technology, and urbanization since the 1980s. The consequences are the emergence of new positive feedbacks with the potential to drive the coupled systems into undesirable states. By linking long-term social and ecological change at a regional scale, our study provides a novel contribution to the understanding of lake ecosystems resilience in present-day China. We argue that sustaining wetland ecosystems requires integrated approaches that incorporate a deeper understanding of social-ecological dynamics over decadal-centennial timescales to address the complex underlying mechanisms leading to the current degradation. Objective To elucidate the clinical features of patients with hemorrhagic moyamoya disease (MMD) in China. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 471 patients with hemorrhagic MMD at Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Clinical features and radiologic findings were analyzed. Results The mean age at diagnosis was 35.3 ± 11.5 years, with 1 peak distribution in patients from 35 to 39 years of age. The ratio of women to men was 1.2:1. Familial occurrence was 3.8%. The primary symptoms at initial presentation were intraventricular hemorrhage (42.0%), intracerebral hemorrhage (23.6%), intracerebral hemorrhage with intraventricular hemorrhage (18.3%), and subarachnoid hemorrhage (16.1%). Before the diagnosis, 68 patients experienced a second episode of bleeding. Rebleeding tends to be common within 6 years after the first bleeding (83.8%). The second bleeding episode was characterized by a change in which hemisphere bleeding occurred in 7 patients (10.3%) and by the type of bleeding in 23 patients (33.8%). Most patients presented with Suzuki stage 3 or 4 MMD (61.7%). Posterior cerebral artery involvement was observed in 28 (18.4%) patients. Forty-three intracranial aneurysms were identified in 39 patients (8.3%). Conclusions A 1-peak pattern in age distribution and mild female dominance in sex distribution were observed in patients with hemorrhagic MMD. Rebleeding tends to be common within 6 years after the first bleeding; however, some cases of rebleeding occur after a long period. Furthermore, the second bleeding episode was characterized frequently by a change in hemisphere and the type of bleeding. Early surgical treatment in both hemispheres is recommended. Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater systems are a global threat to human and aquatic ecosystem health, exhibiting particularly harmful effects when toxin-producing taxa are present. While climatic change and nutrient over-enrichment control the global expansion of total cyanobacterial blooms, it remains unknown to what extent this expansion reflected cyanobacterial assemblage due to the scarcity of long-term monitoring data. Here we use high-throughput sequencing of sedimentary DNA to track ∼100 years of changes in cyanobacterial community in hyper-eutrophic Lake Taihu, China's third largest freshwater lake and the key water source for ∼30 million people. A steady increase in the abundance of Microcystis (as potential toxin producers) during the past thirty years was correlated with increasing temperatures and declining wind speeds, but not with temporal trends in lakewater nutrient concentrations, highlighting recent climate effects on potentially increasing toxin-producing taxa. The socio-environmental repercussions of these findings are worrisome as continued anthropogenic climate change may counteract nutrient amelioration efforts in this critical freshwater resource. Applying pesticides can result in emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but little is known about VOC emission characteristics and the quantities in particular regions. We investigated the use of pesticides in China based on a large-scale survey of 330 counties in 31 provinces and evaluated the national pesticide VOC emission potentials based on thermogravimetric analysis of 1930 commercial pesticides. The results showed that herbicides were the most extensively used pesticide category in China, accounting for 43.47%; emulsifiable concentrate (EC), suspension concentrate, and wettable powder were the dominant pesticide formulations, with proportions of 26.75%, 17.68%, and 17.31%, respectively. The VOC emission potential coefficient (EP) of the liquid formulations was higher than the solid formulations, and the maximum mean EP was 45.59% for EC and the minimum was 0.76% for WP. Among 437 high-VOC pesticide products used in China, EC accounted for 83.52%, and 16.93% of those contained abamectin. The total VOC emissions derived from commercial pesticides in China were 280 kt (kilotons) in 2018, and 65.35% of the contribution was derived from EC. Shandong, Hunan, and Henan were the three provinces with the highest pesticide VOC emissions (>21 kt/y). The emission rate of VOCs from pesticides was 24.80 t/d in China, which was higher than in San Joaquin Valley, California. These findings suggest that some comprehensive measures (e.g., perfecting pesticide management policy, strict supervision for pesticide production and use, and strengthening pesticide reduction publicity) should be taken to reduce VOC emissions from pesticide applications.
