Recent studies have reported incipient morphological caste dimorphism in the Van der Vecht organ size of some temperate Polistes paper wasps. Whether species other than the temperate ones show a similar pattern remains elusive. Here, we have studied some Neotropical Polistes species. By comparing females collected through the year, we showed caste related differences in the size of the Van der Vecht organ in P. ferreri (body size corrected Van der Vech organ size of queens = 0.45 ± 0.06, workers = 0.38 ± 0.07 mm2, p = 0.0021), P. versicolor (body size corrected Van der Vech organ size of queens = 0.54 ± 0.11, workers = 0.46 ± 0.09 mm2, p = 0.010), but not P. simillimus (body size corrected Van der Vech organ size of queens = 0.52 ± 0.05, workers = 0.49 ± 0.06 mm2, p = 0.238). Therefore, it seems that queens and workers of some Neotropical Polistes have diverged in their ontogenic trajectory of the Van der Vecht organ size, providing clear evidence for incipient morphological caste dimorphism. As Polistes are distributed mostly in the tropics, we propose that physical caste differences may be widespread in the genus. Also, we highlight that morphological divergence in the queen–worker phenotypes may have started through differential selection of body structures, like the Van der Vecht organ. The fixed fleet heterogeneous open vehicle routing problem (HFFOVRP) is one of the most practical versions of the vehicle routing problem (VRP) defined because the use of rental vehicles reduces the cost of purchasing and routing for shipping companies nowadays. Also, applying a heterogeneous fleet is recommended due to the physical limitations of the streets and efforts to reduce the running costs of these companies. In this paper, a mixed-integer linear programming is proposed for HFFOVRP. Because this problem, like VRP, is related to NP-hard issues, it is not possible to use exact methods to solve real-world problems. Therefore, in this paper, a hybrid algorithm based on the ant colony algorithm called MACO is presented. This algorithm uses only global updating pheromones for a more efficient search of feasible space and considers a minimum value for pheromones on the edges. Also, pheromones of some best solutions obtained so far are updated, based on the quality of the solutions at each iteration, and three local search algorithms are used for the intensification mechanism. This method was tested on several standard instances, and the results were compared with other algorithms. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than these methods in cost and CPU time. Besides, not only has the algorithm been able to improve the quality of the best-known solutions in nine cases but also the high-quality solutions are obtained for other instances. This paper presents numeric morphology-based evidence on the broadly overlapping distribution of two thief ant species Solenopsis fugax (Latreille, 1798) and S. juliae (Arakelian, 1991) in the East European Pontic-Caspian region. The paper integrates two autonomous data collections and independent analyses performed by different researchers, using different equipment, considering different character combinations, and evaluating partially different samples. Five type series, the neotype series of Solenopsis fugax (Latreille 1798) and the type series of S. flavidula (Nylander, 1849), S. (Diplorhoptrum) fugax var. furtiva Santschi, 1934, S. (Diplorhoptrum) fugax var. pontica Santschi, 1934, S. (Diplorhoptrum) fugax var. scytica Santschi, 1934 were nested in one cluster and we propose the junior synonymy of the latter four taxa names with S. fugax. The other cluster contained only one type specimen of Solenopsis nitida (Dlussky & Radchenko, 1994) measured from AntWeb images. The naming of this cluster was based on both verbal statements and measurements of gynes given in the original description of Solenopsis juliae (Arakelian, 1991), which represents the oldest available name for this cluster. Hence, S. nitida is proposed as junior synonym of S. juliae. Solenopsis cypridis Santschi, 1934 is raised to species rank based on investigation of worker and gyne type specimens. This paper introduces an agent-based model grounded in the ACO algorithm to investigate the impact of partitioning ant colonies on algorithmic performance. The exploration focuses on understanding the roles of group size and number within a multi-objective optimization context. The model consists of a colony of memory-enhanced ants (ME-ANTS) which, starting from a given position, must collaboratively discover the optimal path to the exit point within a grid network. The colony can be divided into groups of different sizes and its objectives are maximizing the number of ants that exit the grid while minimizing path costs. Three distinct analyses were conducted: an overall analysis assessing colony performance across different-sized groups, a group analysis examining the performance of each partitioned group, and a pheromone distribution analysis discerning correlations between temporal pheromone distribution and ant navigation. Simple Summary: Coffee is an essential agricultural product in the worldwide economy. Unfortunately, the coffee berry borer (CBB), the crop's primary pest, significantly impacts the bean's quantity and quality. One strategy for controlling this insect is to use biological control agents, such as ants, some known for naturally living on coffee plantations and consuming CBB throughout all stages of development. Our paper examines a predator–prey interaction between these two insects using a novel mathematical model based on differential equations, where state variables correspond to adult CBBs, immature CBBs, and ants. Coffee is a relevant agricultural product in the global economy, with the amount and quality of the bean being seriously affected by the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), CBB, its principal pest. One of the ways to deal with this beetle is through biological control agents, like ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), some of which are characterized by naturally inhabiting coffee plantations and feeding on CBB in all their life stages. Our paper considers a predator–prey interaction between these two insects through a novel mathematical model based on ordinary differential equations, where the state variables correspond to adult CBBs, immature CBBs, and ants from one species, without specifying whether preying on the CBB is among their feeding habits, in both adult and immature stages. Through this new mathematical model, we could qualitatively predict the different dynamics present in the system as some meaningful parameters were varied, filling the existing gap in the literature and envisioning ways to manage pests. Mathematically, the system's equilibrium points were determined, and its stability was studied through qualitative theory. Bifurcation theory and numerical simulations were applied to illustrate the stability of the results, which were interpreted as conditions of the coexistence of the species, as well as conditions for eradicating the pest, at least theoretically, through biocontrol action in combination with other actions focused on eliminating only adult CBBs. As it concerns the use of Entomology in forensic practice, this paper presents for the first time a case in which Linepithema humile (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) was found to be associated with human corpses. The species was collected in Murcia province (SE Spain) from the body of a middle-aged woman in advanced decomposition stage found indoors in unhygienic housing conditions. In addition to such species, specimens belonging to Calliphora vicina, Muscina stabulans, Musca sp. and Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera) were also collected at the scene. These entomological specimens were found to be valuable for estimating the minimum postmortem interval. This paper advocates the use of compositional specifications based on formal languages as a means of modelling and analysing sophisticated collective behaviour in natural systems. With the use of appropriate linguistic constructs, models can be developed that are both compact and intuitive, and can be easily refined and extended in small steps. Automated workflows can be implemented on top of this methodology to provide quick feedback, enabling rapid design iterations. To support our argument, we present three examples from the natural world, focusing on flocks of birds and colonies of ants, which feature well-known examples of emergent behaviour in collective adaptive systems. We use an agent-based language to develop simple models that aim at capturing these collective phenomena, and discuss the specific language constructs that we use in the process. In this paper we present for the first-time behavioral observations of symbiotic interactions between butterfly caterpillars and ants in the Pantanal wetlands of west-central Brazil (Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states). Four species were found: Aricoris propitia (Stichel, 1910), Nymphidium olinda H. Bates, 1865, Synargis calyce (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1862) (Riodinidae), and Strymon mulucha (Hewitson, 1867) (Lycaenidae). In the Pantanal, these widely distributed species live in association with host plants and tending ants adapted to flooding. Except for A. propitia, which has an obligate association with Solenopsis saevissima (Smith, 1855) complex ants, the other butterfly species are facultatively myrmecophilous. A possible local adaptation was observed in A. propitia caterpillars, which pupated on the host plant instead of underground. Adaptations to flooding observed in plants, ants, and caterpillars, in addition to the existence of endemic species such as Synargis rasqueada Dolibaina, Dias, Mielke & Casagrande, 2013, suggest that wetland-specialized myrmecophiles may have evolved in the Pantanal. Simple Summary: Ants fulfill an important ecological function, not only serving as one of the main decomposers but also playing a role in improving soil fertility. Ants may conflict with humans as a pest species in homes and living facilities (e.g., closets, wardrobes, cabinets, and tables), as well as in outdoor facilities (e.g., tables, chairs, and benches). In addition, ants and humans can come into conflict in green spaces (including parks, gardens, and tourist attractions) and can seriously interfere with outdoor leisure and the life and entertainment activities of people (especially children). Ants are one of the largest insect groups, with the most species and individuals in the world, and they have an important ecological function. Ants are not only an important part of the food chains but are also one of the main decomposers on the Earth; they can also improve soil fertility, etc. However, some species of ants are harmful to human beings, which leads to people's panic or worry about coming into contact with these insects during their daily home life or in their tourism or leisure activities. The presence of ants in indoor living facilities and in outdoor green spaces, parks, gardens, and tourist attractions seriously interferes with the leisure life and entertainment activities of all people (especially children). How can we control ants in these environments? Do we kill them by spraying insecticides, or do we adopt green prevention and control technology for the ecological management of ants? Simple Summary: The coffee berry borer (CBB), the most damaging coffee pest, significantly reduces coffee quality and yields. Azteca ants are known biological control agents of the CBB. Our paper demonstrates that the naturally occurring vegetation connectivity between coffee plants and Azteca nest trees facilitates ant mobility, resource recruitment, and CBB removal services. Promoting habitat conservation and structural complexity in agroecosystems supports ant-mediated ecosystem services and natural pest regulation. Vegetation connectivity is an essential aspect of the habitat complexity that impacts species interactions at local scales. However, agricultural intensification reduces connectivity in agroforestry systems, including coffee agroecosystems, which may hinder the movement of natural enemies and reduce the ecosystem services that they provide. Ants play an important role in regulating the coffee berry borer (CBB), which is the most damaging coffee pest. For arboreal ant communities, the connections between trees are important structures that facilitate ant mobility, resource recruitment, foraging success, and pest control ability. To better understand how connectivity impacts arboreal ants in coffee agroecosystems, we conducted an experiment to assess the impact of artificial (string) and naturally occurring vegetation (vines, leaves, branches) connectivity on Azteca sericeasur behavior on coffee plants. We compared ant activity, resource recruitment, and CBB removal rates across three connectivity treatments connecting coffee plants to A. sericeasur nest trees: vegetation connectivity, string, and control (not connected) treatments. We found higher rates of ant activity, resource recruitment, and CBB removal on plants with naturally occurring vegetation connections to A. sericeasur nest trees. Artificial connectivity (string) increased the rates of resource recruitment and CBB removal but to a lesser extent than vegetation connectivity. Moreover, vegetation connectivity buffered reductions in ant activity with distance from the ant nest tree. These results reinforce how habitat complexity in the form of vegetation connectivity impacts interspecific interactions at the local scale. Our results also suggest that leaving some degree of vegetation connectivity between coffee plants and shade trees can promote ant-mediated biological pest control in coffee systems. The doryline ant genus Eburopone Borowiec, 2016 currently contains only one valid species, E. wroughtoni (Forel, 1910) from southern Africa, with a considerable number of undescribed species awaiting formal description in the Afrotropical and Malagasy regions. In the present paper, Eburopone easoana sp. nov. is described based on workers and dealate queens from a colony series collected in an evergreen forest on the Dak Lak Plateau of Vietnam (Ea So Nature Reserve, Dak Lak Province). The worker of the new species is morphologically clearly distinguished from E. wroughtoni by the combination of following characteristics: i) frontal line distinct, extending a little beyond mid-length of cranium; ii) anterior (frontoclypeal) margins of torulo-posttorular complex not forming conspicuous lobes protruding over anterior clypeal margin in full-face view; iii) mandibles when closed in full-face view forming only a little space between anterior clypeal margin and mandibles; iv) promesonotal suture faint and inconspicuous; v) abdominal segment III in dorsal view distinctly wider than long, with lateral margins only feebly convex. This represents the first discovery of the genus Eburopone in the Oriental realm, revealing the disjunct distribution of the genus. A partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene (658 bp) is provided as a DNA barcode for the new species. A worker-based key to the doryline genera of the Oriental realm is also provided. Ants are among the most abundant terrestrial invertebrate predators on Earth. To overwhelm their prey, they employ several remarkable behavioral, physiological, and biochemical innovations, including an effective paralytic venom. Ant venoms are thus cocktails of toxins finely tuned to disrupt the physiological systems of insect prey. They have received little attention yet hold great promise for the discovery of novel insecticidal molecules. To identify insect-neurotoxins from ant venoms, we screened the paralytic activity on blowflies of nine synthetic peptides previously characterized in the venom of Tetramorium bicarinatum. We selected peptide U11, a 34-amino acid peptide, for further insecticidal, structural, and pharmacological experiments. Insecticidal assays revealed that U11 is one of the most paralytic peptides ever reported from ant venoms against blowflies and is also capable of paralyzing honeybees. An NMR spectroscopy of U11 uncovered a unique scaffold, featuring a compact triangular ring helix structure stabilized by a single disulfide bond. Pharmacological assays using Drosophila S2 cells demonstrated that U11 is not cytotoxic, but suggest that it may modulate potassium conductance, which structural data seem to corroborate and will be confirmed in a future extended pharmacological investigation. • Big headed ants (Pheidole megacephala) are able to forage in a Y-maze for food. • Previously, investigators modeled P. megacephala with a two-pheromone model. • We account for empirical results of P. megacephala foraging with a one-pheromone model. • Our one-pheromone model recapitulates key patterns and is biologically plausible. • This work demonstrates principles of sensory-cognitive modeling and ant foraging. In a 2009 paper, Dussutour et al. proposed that big headed ants (Pheidole megacephala) employ two attractant pheromones during foraging: one for exploration and another during food gathering. This claim was consistent with, and argued to be supported by, laboratory studies of ant exploration and food-gathering in a Y-maze apparatus. The authors measured foraging activity and colony foraging choice in terms of the number of ants choosing different branches over time, where experimental conditions modified the history of food availability at the end of each branch. They built a two-pheromone mathematical model to account for observed rates and proportions of ants traversing the left versus right branch. Here we show that the main reported experimental observations can be explained by a one-pheromone model. Our findings show that it is plausible, but unnecessary, to hypothesize that these ants employ two distinct pheromones in order to account for the two principal results of the Dussutour et al. study, and therefore, the study falls short of dispositive evidence for a two-pheromone model. More broadly, we highlight that patterns of animal behavior can be ambiguous with respect to sensory and cognitive mechanisms, hopefully motivating future modeling efforts that perform formal comparison across models with different structure. The paper considers the modification and application of the ant colony method for the problem of directed enumeration of the values of system parameters when performing calculated multiple calculations. Interaction with the user makes it possible to stop the process of exhaustive enumeration of sets of parameter values, and the application of a modification of the ant colony method will allow us to consider rational sets at early iterations. If the user does not terminate the algorithm, then the proposed modifications allow one to enumerate all solutions using the ant colony method. To modify the ant colony method, a new probabilistic formula and various algorithms of the ant colony method are proposed, allowing for each agent to find a new set of parameter values. This paper addresses the problem of multi-robot task scheduling in Antarctic environments. There are various algorithms for multi-robot task scheduling, but there is a risk in robot operation when applied in Antarctic environments. This paper proposes a practical multi-robot scheduling method using ant colony optimization in Antarctic environments. The proposed method was tested in both simulated and real Antarctic environments, and it was analyzed and compared with other existing algorithms. The purpose of geographic location selection is to make the best use of space. Geographic location selection contains a large amount of spatiotemporal data and constraints, resulting in too many solutions. Therefore, this paper adopts the ant colony algorithm in the meta-heuristic search method combined with the incomplete quadtree to improve the searchability of the space. This paper proposes an improved ant colony algorithm in nonuniform space to solve the P-center facility location problem. The geographic space is divided by the incomplete quadtree, and the ant colony path is constructed on the level of the quadtree division. Ant colonies can leave pheromones on multiple search paths, and optimized quadtree encoding in nonuniform space stores pheromone matrices and distance matrices. The algorithm proposed in this paper improves the pheromone diffusion algorithm and the optimization objective at the same time to update the pheromone in the nonuniform space and obtain the ideal solution. As an important historical and cultural heritage, rural red tourism sites have high historical, cultural, and social values. Moreover, rural red tourism sites are suitable for development and protection as tourism resources due to their unique landscape, architecture, culture, and art. In this paper, we propose a path generation model based on an ant colony algorithm to recommend the best path for tourists to visit rural red tourism sites. First, this paper investigates the modeling methods of path planning and multiobjective planning and their related solution algorithms to prepare for the establishment and solution of the tour path generation model for rural red tourism sites. By analyzing the problem description, this paper proposes the two model objectives of the shortest tour path and the highest total rating of the tourist attraction, and the model limitation of the total tour usage time, to model the model with a multiobjective planning approach. Then, by modifying the calculation of visibility and pheromone increments of the ant colony algorithm, the modified ant colony algorithm can take into account the two objectives of shortest path and highest total rating when constructing the path. As a meta-heuristic algorithm, the ant colony algorithm has been successfully used to solve various combinatorial optimization problems. However, the existing algorithm that takes the power of ants to solve distributed constraint optimization problems (ACO_DCOP) is easy to fall into local optima. To deal with this issue, this paper presents an adaptive ant colony algorithm based on local information entropy to solve distributed constraint optimization problems, named LIEAD. In LIEAD, the local information entropy is introduced to help agents adaptively select the pheromone update strategy and value selection strategy, which improves the convergence speed and the quality of the solution. Moreover, a restart mechanism is designed to break the accumulation state of pheromone, which increases the population diversity and helps the algorithm jump out of the local optima. In order to improve the efficiency and adaptability of cognitive radar jamming decision-making, a fusion algorithm (Ant-QL) based on ant colony and Q-Learning is proposed in this paper. The algorithm does not rely on a priori information and enhances adaptability through real-time interactions between the jammer and the target radar. At the same time, it can be applied to single jammer and multiple jammer countermeasure scenarios with high jamming effects. First, traditional Q-Learning and DQN algorithms are discussed, and a radar jamming decision-making model is built for the simulation verification of each algorithm. Then, an improved Q-Learning algorithm is proposed to address the shortcomings of both algorithms. By introducing the pheromone mechanism of ant colony algorithms in Q-Learning and using the ε -greedy algorithm to balance the contradictory relationship between exploration and exploitation, the algorithm greatly avoids falling into a local optimum, thus accelerating the convergence speed of the algorithm with good stability and robustness in the convergence process. In order to better adapt to the cluster countermeasure environment in future battlefields, the algorithm and model are extended to cluster cooperative jamming decision-making. We map each jammer in the cluster to an intelligent ant searching for the optimal path, and multiple jammers interact with each other to obtain information. During the process of confrontation, the method greatly improves the convergence speed and stability and reduces the need for hardware and power resources of the jammer. Assuming that the number of jammers is three, the experimental simulation results of the convergence speed of the Ant-QL algorithm improve by 85.4%, 80.56% and 72% compared with the Q-Learning, DQN and improved Q-Learning algorithms, respectively. During the convergence process, the Ant-QL algorithm is very stable and efficient, and the algorithm complexity is low. After the algorithms converge, the average response times of the four algorithms are 6.99 × 10−4 s, 2.234 × 10−3 s, 2.21 × 10−4 s and 1.7 × 10−4 s, respectively. Tetramorium Mayr, 1855 is a worldwide distributed and hyperdiverse ant genus consisting of almost 600 taxa manifesting various life history strategies. Species of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group represents one of the most extreme forms of parasitism and consist of degenerate workerless social parasites of several Tetramorium species. So far, its members have been recorded in the Palearctic from montane to alpine zones and reveal an interesting disjunction in host selection observed between eastern-Mediterranean and western-Mediterranean species. We describe a fifth member of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group: Tetramorium albenae Salata, van Delft & Borowiec sp. n. The species morphologically differs from the remaining members of the group by the combination of the following characters: dense and erect pilosity of appendages and the whole body, smooth head sculpture, predominantly smooth anepisternum and katepisternum, lack of blunt teeth on propodeum, and presence of distinct carianae on the dorsolateral margins of the propodeum. Tetramorium albenae Salata, van Delft & Borowiec sp. n. was collected in a lowland olive grove, a site so far not associated with the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group, from a nest of Tetramorium kephalosi (a new host species for the group). The data presented in this paper provide new insights into the habitat preferences of the species of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group and extend our knowledge on the potential host species of these parasites. The operational aircraft maintenance routing problem (OAMRP) plays a critical part in producing considerable cost reductions for airlines, since its solution directly influences the number of operating leased aircraft. To reduce the quantity of required aircraft, adopting cruise speed control in OAMRP is a good strategy. In this paper, we investigate the OAMRP with cruise speed control. The objective is to minimize the required quantity of aircraft by finding the optimal aircraft routes through cruise time optimization. The focus is on solving two issues simultaneously: (i) optimization of cruise times and (ii) determination of aircraft routes. Since the combination of two intricate sets of decisions poses significant methodological challenges, the difficulty lies in how to efficiently solve it. Accordingly, the goal of this study is twofold: (i) to design a preprocessing step to reduce the network size and (ii) to develop an improved ant colony optimization (IACO) algorithm with a new state transition mechanism to provide the guidance for cruise times optimization and a new pheromone updating mechanism to enhance the search efficiency and precision. By keeping in view the importance of lightweight effect of new energy vehicles, in this paper, we have carried out an in-depth analysis of key contents such as new materials, battery weight, carbon fiber technology, and structural design technology in the process of lightweight development of new energy vehicles. Furthermore, this paper introduces the pseudorandom proportional rule to improve the selection method of the seed solution, makes appropriate random disturbance to the center of the pheromone distribution, and reforms the standard deviation of the pheromone distribution. Taking the lightweight of new energy vehicle doors as an example, this paper verifies the new energy vehicle lightweight algorithm based on ant colony algorithm. It is found that the improved continuous domain basic ant colony algorithm is superior to the other two algorithms and it has the capacity to solve optimization problems and has the advantages of high reliability. Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set, which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers, is a compilation of ant records from collections (18,713 records), unpublished data (29,651 records), and published sources (106,910 records; 1,059 references), including papers, theses, dissertations, and book chapters published from 1886 to 2020. In total, the data set contains 153,818 ant records from 7,636 study locations in the Atlantic Forest, representing 10 subfamilies, 99 genera, 1,114 ant species identified with updated taxonomic certainty, and 2,235 morphospecies codes. Our data set reflects the heterogeneity in ant records, which include ants sampled at the beginning of the taxonomic history of myrmecology (the 19th and 20th centuries) and more recent ant surveys designed to address specific questions in ecology and biology. The data set can be used by researchers to develop strategies to deal with different macroecological and region‐wide questions, focusing on assemblages, species occurrences, and distribution patterns. Simple Summary: Adhesive tapes are as effective as baits and pitfall traps in monitoring Solenopsis invicta and Tapinoma melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China. However, adhesive tapes detected less ants and fewer species of non-target ants than baits and pitfall traps. Our study demonstrated that tape-paving behavior can potentially be used in developing more specific monitoring methods for S. invicta and T. melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China. Our previous study discovered that two urban pest ants, red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), and ghost ants, Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) (Formicidae: Dolichoderinae), can pave viscose surfaces with particles to facilitate food search and transport. We hypothesize that this paving behavior can be applied to monitor S. invicta and T. melanocephalum. In the present study, 3998 adhesive tapes, each with a food source (sausage), were placed in 20 locations around Guangzhou, China (181–224 tapes per location), and their efficiency to detect S. invicta and T. melanocephalum was compared with two traditional ant-monitoring methods, baiting and pitfall trapping. Overall, S. invicta was detected by 45.6% and 46.4% of baits and adhesive tapes, respectively. In each location, the percentage of adhesive tapes detecting S. invicta and T. melanocephalum was similar when compared to baits and pitfall traps. However, significantly more non-target ant species showed up on bait and pitfall traps. Seven non-target ant species—Pheidole parva Mayr (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole nodus Smith (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole sinica Wu & Wang (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole yeensis Forel (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Carebara affinis (Jerdon) (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Camponotus nicobarensis Mayr (Formicidae: Formicinae), and Odontoponera transversa (Smith) (Formicidae: Ponerinae)—also showed tape paving behavior, but they can be easily distinguished morphologically from S. invicta and T. melanocephalum. Our study showed that the paving behavior occurs in different subfamilies of ants (i.e., myrmicinae, dolichoderinae, formicinae, and ponerinae). The world-wide fauna of the genus Cardiocondyla is assessed to have 79 currently recognized species and is subdivided into 14 informal species groups plus three monotypical clades. It is argued that the phylogenetic placement of Cardiocondyla next to the genus Ocymyrmex Emery, 1886 as proposed by Blaimer et al. (2018) is doubtful. The main body of the paper is a species-level taxonomic revision of those six species groups and the one monotypical clade which have their centers of origin in the Oriental and Australasian regions. The fauna of this area comprises 26 species eleven of which are described as new: Cardiocondyla schulzi n.sp., C. argentea n.sp., C. semiargentea n.sp., C. argyrotricha n.sp., C. latifrons n.sp., C. micropila n.sp., C. allonivalis n.sp., C. excavata n.sp., C. goroka n.sp., C. subspina n.sp. and C. sulcata n.sp. Recognized as junior synonyms were: Cardiocondyla tsukuyomi Terayama, 1999 and C. breviscapus Seifert, 2003 of C. minutior Forel, 1899 and C. brevispinosa (Donisthorpe, 1948) of C. paradoxa Emery, 1897. Each confirmed species is characterized by verbal descriptions, 18 numerically recorded phenotypic characters, z-stack images in three viewing positions, the key, a differential diagnosis and, if available, a brief life history. Exploratory and hypothesis-driven data analyses of phenotypic characters support the separation of the cryptic species Cardiocondyla minutior Forel, 1899, C. goa Seifert, 2003 and C. tjibodana Karavajev, 1935, two of which have dispersed as tramp species to the New World. Missing development of postzygotic isolation due to very strong prezygotic barriers is indicated in the closely related species Cardiocondyla latifrons n.sp. and C. micropila n.sp. which produce fertile hybrids in laboratory rearings but apparently do not hybridize in a natural context even if nesting in close neighborhood. The strong prezygotic isolation is supposed to be generated by the prevalence of intranidal mating and the difficulty for a mated heterospecific gyne to become accepted in a foreign colony. In this paper, we propose a stochastic delay mutualistic model of leaf-cutter ants with stage structure and their fungus garden, in which we explore how the discrete delay and white noise affect the dynamic of the population system. The existence and uniqueness of global positive solution are proved, and the asymptotic behaviours of the stochastic model around the positive equilibrium point of the deterministic model are also investigated. Furthermore, the sufficient conditions for the persistence of the population are established. Simple Summary: Social insects are able, through decentralised processes, to make collective decisions in various situations, such as decisions regarding the nest choice or exploitation of food sources. At the intranidal level, a network of trophallaxis leads to the dissemination of food, but there are few empirical and far less theoretical studies investigating the mechanisms and the behavioural rules governing the dynamics and the patterns of food exchange at the individual and colony levels in ant colonies. In our study, we developed and analysed a data-driven model whose results fit the characteristics of the observed networks of trophallactic exchange in colonies of Lasius niger ants (a model species). We tested different assumptions concerning the trophallactic behavioural rules at the individual level. The model outcomes and their comparisons with our experiments offer new insights into the link between these individual behaviours and the structure and efficiency of the resulting network of food exchange at the colony level, as well as on the dynamics of the food flow entering the nest. Through a multidisciplinary approach involving theory and experimentation, we validated the model and, in this paper, discuss the biological relevance of our assumptions. Food sharing can occur in both social and non-social species, but it is crucial in eusocial species, in which only some group members collect food. This food collection and the intranidal (i.e., inside the nest) food distribution through trophallactic (i.e., mouth-to-mouth) exchanges are fundamental in eusocial insects. However, the behavioural rules underlying the regulation and the dynamics of food intake and the resulting networks of exchange are poorly understood. In this study, we provide new insights into the behavioural rules underlying the structure of trophallactic networks and food dissemination dynamics within the colony. We build a simple data-driven model that implements interindividual variability and the division of labour to investigate the processes of food accumulation/dissemination inside the nest, both at the individual and collective levels. We also test the alternative hypotheses (no variability and no division of labour). The division of labour, combined with inter-individual variability, leads to predictions of the food dynamics and exchange networks that run, contrary to the other models. Our results suggest a link between the interindividual heterogeneity of the trophallactic behaviours, the food flow dynamics and the network of trophallactic events. Our results show that a slight level of heterogeneity in the number of trophallactic events is enough to generate the properties of the experimental networks and seems to be crucial for the creation of efficient trophallactic networks. Despite the relative simplicity of the model rules, efficient trophallactic networks may emerge as the networks observed in ants, leading to a better understanding of the evolution of self-organisation in such societies. • Since the first description of the fairy circles 50 years ago, the cause is still hotly debated. • The first review paper in nearly 20 years on the fairy circles of the Namib Desert. • The contrasting main theories on the formation and maintenance of fairy circles are discussed. • The physical characteristics of fairy circles are described and critically reviewed. Since they were described for the first time 50 years ago, more than 30 peer-reviewed papers have been published on a number of extremely diverse theories as the cause of the formation of hundreds of thousands of nearly circular barren patches (fairy circles) found in southwestern Angola, Namibia and northwestern South Africa. However, scientists interested in finding an explanation for the cause and maintenance of these fairy circles in the driest parts of the world are still without agreement on the true reason(s) behind this intriguing phenomenon. In this review we firstly present the four main theories and explain their hypotheses on the formation and/or maintenance of fairy circles. Secondly, we summarise the previously described physical characteristics of the fairy circles, e.g. soil substrate, moisture content, shape, size, lifespan, dynamics and spatial patterning, and then present the supporting evidence as published by the proponents of the theories on vegetation self-arrangement, insects/ants, gas and Euphorbia allelopathy, as the causative drivers of this natural phenomenon. In order to improve the accuracy and speed of solving the inverse problem of source-seeking heat conduction, the paper proposes a correlation-based ant colony optimization algorithm for the inverse problem of source-seeking heat conduction based on the characteristics of the influence of the heat source position on the boundary temperature distribution in the heat conduction problem. This method is used to construct the corresponding heuristic information value for each co-ordinate of the heat source location, which can reflect the degree of similarity between the temperature curve of the calculated measuring point and the temperature curve of the real measuring point, namely the correlation degree. The ant colony optimization algorithm the medium path selection mechanism and the structure of the objective function have been improved. The paper replaces the actual experiment with numerical calculation obtain the temperature of the measuring point, and performs computer programming experiment on the inverse problem. The calculation results show that the calibration method of this heuristic information value and the objective function the construction method can distinguish the quality of the path well, thereby increasing the speed of the ant colony converging to the best path. The vertical alignment optimization is about developing a minimum cost curvilinear vertical profile of constrained grade sections and appropriate non‐overlapping vertical curves passing through fixed control points with elevation constraints. Variations in ground profile and discreteness in unit cutting and filling costs make it a non‐convex, noisy, constrained optimization problem with many local minima. Further, the gradient related constraints and vertical curvature are non‐linear. This paper presents an innovative exploring and exploiting ant colony optimization (E&E‐ACO) algorithm with an appropriate point sampling, vertical curve fitting strategies, and an intuitive feasible region identification approach for solving the vertical alignment optimization problem. The E&E‐ACO algorithm extensively explores the feasible search space to generate a set of potential solutions and effectively exploit the space around the potential solutions for developing the optimized vertical alignment. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated using two case studies. In one case study, the optimized solution by the proposed method had a marginally better objective function value and about three times lesser computational time than the solution by the mesh adaptive direct search method. The optimized alignment satisfied the elevation constraints of fixed control points and imitated the manually designed real‐world vertical alignment. The linearly varying exploration and exploitation parameters had better convergence rate than the other tested variations. This paper aims to improve transient stability using the Ant Colony Optimization for Continuous Domains (ACOR). This improvement is obtained by solving the Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow (TSCOPF) problem and extracting the sensitivity coefficients. The presented costs minimization approach requires less execution time to manage energy resources efficiently and compared to other conventional methods, it also outperforms based on statistical indicators such as mean and standard deviation. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the suggested method considers the active power generation of the generating units along with their terminal voltage, which notably decreases the operation cost and reduces risk to the power system. On the other hand, the application of ACOR algorithm can reduce the fuel cost of power system operation to 60,928.36 $/h with a decrease of 15.33 $/h compared to the conventional method with a standard deviation equal to 2.51 $/h and an execution time of 7.66 s. This strategy could be used in power system dispatching. Aiming at the problems of complex space, long planning time, and insufficient path security of 3D path planning, an improved ant colony algorithm (TGACO) is proposed, which can be used to solve symmetric and asymmetric path planning problems. Firstly, the 3D array is used to access the environment information, which can record the flight environment and avoid the inefficiency of planning. Secondly, a multi-objective function of distance and angle is established to improve the efficiency and safety of the path. Then, a target-guided heuristic function is proposed, and an anti-deadlock mechanism is introduced to improve the efficiency of the ant colony algorithm. Next, the node pheromone update rules are improved to further improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, experiments prove the effectiveness of the improved algorithm, TGACO, and its efficiency in complex environments has obvious advantages. Background: Parasites cause predictable alternative phenotypes of host individuals. Investigating these parasitogenic phenotypes may be essential in cases where parasitism is common or taxa is described based on a parasitized individual. Ignoring them could lead to erroneous conclusions in biodiversity-focused research, taxonomy, evolution, and ecology. However, to date, integrating alternative phenotypes into a set of wild-type individuals in morphometric analysis poses extraordinary challenges to experts. This paper presents an approach for reconstructing the putative healthy morphology of parasitized ants using algorithmic processing. Our concept enables the integration of alternative parasitogenic phenotypes in morphometric analyses. Methods: We tested the applicability of our strategy in a large pool of Cestoda-infected and healthy individuals of three Temnothorax ant species (T. nylanderi, T. sordidulus, and T. unifasciatus). We assessed the stability and convergence of morphological changes caused by parasitism across species. We used an artificial neural network-based multiclass classifier model to predict species based on morphological trait values and the presence of parasite infection. Results: Infection causes predictable morphological changes in each species, although these changes proved to be species-specific. Therefore, integrating alternative parasitogenic phenotypes in morphometric analyses can be achieved at the species level, and a prior species hypothesis is required. Conclusion: Despite the above limitation, the concept is appropriate. Beyond parasitogenic phenotypes, our approach can also integrate morphometric data of an array of alternative phenotypes (subcastes in social insects, alternative morphs in polyphenic species, and alternative sexes in sexually dimorphic species) whose integrability had not been resolved before. One of the most studied and best-known mutualistic relationships between insects is that between ants and phloem-feeding insects. Ants feed on honeydew excreted by phloem-feeding insects and, in exchange, attack the phloem feeders’ natural enemies, including parasitic wasps. However, parasitic wasps are under selection to exploit information on hazards and avoid them. Here, we tested whether parasitic wasps detect the previous presence of ants attending colonies of phloem feeders. Behavioural assays demonstrate that wasps left colonies previously attended by ants more frequently than control colonies. This behaviour has a potential cost for the parasitic wasp as females inserted their ovipositor in fewer hosts per colony. In a further bioassay, wasps spent less time on papers impregnated with extracts of the ant cues than on control papers. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry analyses demonstrated that ants left a blend of cuticular hydrocarbons when they attended colonies of phloem feeders. These cuticular hydrocarbons are deposited passively when ants search for food. Overall, these results suggest, for the first time, that parasitic wasps of honeydew producers detect the previous presence of mutualistic ants through contact infochemicals. Volatility leads to disruption in synchronism between generators of a continuous system. The frequency of the volatility is usually between a few tenths of Hz to several Hz. This volatility is sometimes divided into two types, local and interregional. Local volatility is the low-frequency volatility of a power plant unit or units of a power plant relative to the grid whereas interregional volatility is the volatility of the units of one area relative to the units of another area. The worst kind of low-frequency volatility occurs when the power system in a region has a short three-phase connection to the earth, creating a complete instability of the grid and operating protective systems. One of the ways to improve the dynamic stability and steady-state of the power system is to use power system stabilizers and FACTS devices in the system. In this paper, the stabilization of the power system stabilizers (PSSs) and SSSC is done using the ant colony algorithm. Studies on a four-machine system with the three-phase error were performed in two scenarios and finally compared with the PSO method. Some members of Chaetothyriales, an order containing potential agents of opportunistic infections in humans, have a natural habitat in nests of tropical arboreal ants. In these black fungi, two types of ant symbiosis are known, i.e. occurrence in domatia inside living plants, or as components of carton constructions made of ant-chewed plant tissue. In order to explain differences between strains from these types of association, we sequenced and annotated genomes of two newly described carton species, Incumbomyces lentus and Incumbomyces delicatus, and compared these with genomes of four domatia species and related Chaetothyriales. Ants prefer to nest under stones. This is due to temperature regimes favorable to the development of ant broods. In this paper, we investigated the influence of stone and ambient parameters on ant nests and created a model of thermal processes in ant nests under stones. The simulation results were compared with temperature measurements. Temperature was measured under 20 stones under different illumination conditions (sun, penumbra and shade) for 3 ant species (Myrmica rubra, Formica cinerea, Lasius niger) in Ukraine from April to August 2021. Stones were categorized as hot, warm and cold. Each stone was checked once a week for the number of workers and brood. Under two stones, temperature was measured using loggers. The number of workers under hot stones in spring increased three weeks earlier than under cold and warm ones. In May-June, the maximum number of workers was recorded under hot stones. In July, the number of ants was minimal under all categories of stones. Larvae appeared under hot stones two weeks earlier than under other categories of stones. In August, the number of pupae under cold and warm stones was greater than under hot ones. Number of larvae and pupae was positively influenced by the diameter of the stone, whereas stone height did not exert an important role. Ants preferred to inhabit nests under large flat stones, which are easily heated in spring and warm the soil under them. Another important characteristic was the location of the stones. The highest brood development was noted in nests under stones in open areas well lit by the sun in the daytime. In summer ants migrated from under hot stones, because soil under it dry and warmed. This paper studies the green single-machine scheduling problem that considers the delay cost and the energy consumption of manufacturing equipment and builds its integrated optimization model. The improved ant colony scheduling algorithm based on the Pareto solution set is used to solve this problem. By setting the heuristic information, state transition rules, and other core parameters reasonably, the performance of the algorithm is improved effectively. The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a typical combinatorial optimization problem, which is often applied to sensor placement, path planning, etc. In this paper, an improved ACO algorithm based on an adaptive heuristic factor (AHACO) is proposed to deal with the TSP. In the AHACO, three main improvements are proposed to improve the performance of the algorithm. First, the k-means algorithm is introduced to classify cities. The AHACO provides different movement strategies for different city classes, which improves the diversity of the population and improves the search ability of the algorithm. A modified 2-opt local optimizer is proposed to further tune the solution. Finally, a mechanism to jump out of the local optimum is introduced to avoid the stagnation of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm is tested in numerical experiments using 39 TSP instances, and results shows that the solution quality of the AHACO is 83.33% higher than that of the comparison algorithms on average. Tapinoma indicum (Forel) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a nuisance pest in Asia countries. However, studies on T. indicum are limited, especially in the field of molecular biology, to investigate the species characteristic at the molecular level. This paper aims to provide valuable genetic markers as tools with which to study the T. indicum population. In this study, a total of 143,998 microsatellite markers were developed based on the 2.61 × 106 microsatellites isolated from T. indicum genomic DNA sequences. Fifty selected microsatellite markers were amplified with varying numbers of alleles ranging from 0 to 19. Seven out of fifty microsatellite markers were characterized for polymorphism with the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) and linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis. All seven microsatellite markers demonstrated a high polymorphic information content (PIC) value ranging from 0.87 to 0.93, with a mean value of 0.90. There is no evidence of scoring errors caused by stutter peaks, no large allele dropout, and no linkage disequilibrium among the seven loci; although loci Ti-Tr04, Ti-Tr09, Ti-Te04, Ti-Te13, and Ti-Pe5 showed signs of null alleles and deviation from the HWE due to excessive homozygosity. In conclusion, a significant amount of microsatellite markers was developed from the data set of next-generation sequencing, and seven of microsatellite markers were validated as informative genetic markers that can be utilized to study the T. indicum population. In the context of the normalization of the epidemic, contactless delivery is becoming one of the most concerned research areas. In the severe epidemic environment, due to the frequent encounter of bayonet temperature measurement, road closure, and other factors, the real-time change frequency of each traffic information is high. In order to improve the efficiency of contactless distribution and enhance user satisfaction, this paper proposes a contactless distribution path optimization algorithm based on improved ant colony algorithm. First of all, the possible traffic factors in the epidemic environment were analyzed, and the cost of each link in the distribution process was modeled. Then, the customer satisfaction is analyzed according to the customer service time window and transformed into a cost model. Finally, the total delivery cost and user satisfaction cost were taken as the optimization objectives, and a new pheromone updating method was adopted and the traditional ant colony algorithm was improved. A diversity of arthropods (myrmecophiles) thrives within ant nests, many of them unmolested though some, such as the specialized Eucharitidae parasitoids, may cause direct damage to their hosts. Ants are known to discriminate between nestmates and non-nestmates, but whether they recognize the strength of a threat and their capacity to adjust their behavior accordingly have not been fully explored. We aimed to determine whether Ectatomma tuberculatum ants exhibited specific behavioral responses to potential or actual intruders posing different threats to the host colony and to contribute to an understanding of complex ant-eucharitid interactions. Behavioral responses differed significantly according to intruder type. Ants evicted intruders that represented a threat to the colony’s health (dead ants) or were not suitable as prey items (filter paper, eucharitid parasitoid wasps, non myrmecophilous adult weevils), but killed potential prey (weevil larvae, termites). The timing of detection was in accordance with the nature and size of the intruder: corpses (a potential source of contamination) were detected faster than any other intruder and transported to the refuse piles within 15 min. The structure and complexity of behavioral sequences differed among those intruders that were discarded. Workers not only recognized and discriminated between several distinct intruders but also adjusted their behavior to the type of intruder encountered. Our results confirm the previously documented recognition capabilities of E. tuberculatum workers and reveal a very fine-tuned intruder discrimination response. Colony-level prophylactic and hygienic behavioral responses through effective removal of inedible intruders appears to be the most general and flexible form of defense in ants against a diverse array of intruders. However, this generalized response to both potentially lethal and harmless intruders might have driven the evolution of ant-eucharitid interactions, opening a window for parasitoid attack and allowing adult parasitoid wasps to quickly leave the natal nest unharmed. To overcome the lengthy search time, massive space occupation, and overlong planned path of the traditional A* algorithm, this paper integrates the bidirectional search with the intelligent ant colony algorithm to obtain the heuristic function selection factor, and uses the factor to improve the evaluation function of the algorithm. The simulation results show that the improved algorithm achieved better dynamic navigation than the traditional A* algorithm both in search time and distance, featuring shorter path searching time and the algorithm running time. The Aeronautical Radio Incorporated (ARINC) 664 Avionics Full Duplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) data bus has been developed based on the Ethernet standard Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.3, including redundancy, guaranteed bandwidth, and deterministic timing of transmit interval time to meet the increasing amounts of data exchange needs among aircraft equipment while reducing the harness weight. Isolated data tunnels, called Virtual Links (VLs), are established to route Ethernet frames from a single source to one or more destinations using end systems and switches that contain a static routing mechanism specific to ARINC 664 AFDX. A limited number of algorithmic approaches are presented in the literature to route VLs; however, they are proven in uncomplicated topologies. Depending on the technological development, the node amount consisting of End Systems (ESs), Switches, and Remote Data Concentrators (RDCs) in the aircraft data bus structure will increase enormously. Bandwidth utilization (BWU), bandwidth flexibility limit for further extensions, port usage, total harness weight, latency, and redundancy should be considered in addition to number of nodes to determine VLs' route paths in ARINC 664 AFDX networks. In such cases, determining optimal paths of VLs in ARINC 664 AFDX networks becomes a challenging problem to solve with the existing methods in the literature. This paper proposes an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based algorithm to determine optimal VL path routes in the complex topology of ARINC 664 AFDX networks considering multi-effective parameters. Experimental simulations are executed to confirm the validity of the presented algorithm in different case studies and show its applicability in the industry. The obtained results of the proposed algorithm outperform conventional algorithms existing in the literature in terms of bandwidth usage depending on predefined expansion capacity and solution time. Thailand has a great diversity of ant fauna as a zoogeographical crossroads and biodiversity hotspot. The last publication presenting a Thai ant checklist was published in 2005. In the present paper, based on an examination of museum specimens and published records, a comprehensive and critical species list of Thai ants is synthesized. Currently, 529 valid species and subspecies in 109 genera among ten subfamilies are known from Thailand with their diversity and distribution within 77 provinces presented and assigned to six geographical regions. Furthermore, Thailand is the type locality for 81 ant species. Forty-one species are here newly recorded for Thailand with photographs illustrating these species. The checklist provides information on distribution and a comprehensive bibliography. This study will also serve as a guide for the upper northeast and central Thailand, which are poorly sampled; a comprehensive reference list relating to endemic taxa and localities where conservation is an important priority, thus an essential resource for policy makers and conservation planners concerned with the management of insect diversity in Thailand; and a list of exotic ant species found in Thailand, which could possibly impact the ecological balance. To become integrated into an ant society, myrmecophilous parasites must overcome both the defenses and the communication system of their hosts. Some aleocharine staphylinid beetles employ chemical and tactile strategies to invade colonies, where they later consume ant brood and participate in parasitic trophallaxis with host ants. By producing compounds that both appease their hosts and stimulate adoption, the beetles are able to live in and deposit their own eggs in the well defended ant nest. In the current paper, previous findings on the myrmecophilous behavior and morphological features of the staphylinid beetle Lomechusoides (formerly Lomechusa) strumosus are reviewed and re-evaluated. Hitherto unpublished results concerning the beetles’ ability to participate in the social food flow of their host ants are reported. Furthermore, we present an analysis and documentation of the behavioral interactions between beetles and host ants during the adoption process, and we report new histological and scanning electron microscopic analyses of the exocrine glands and morphological adaptations that underlie the myrmecophilous behavior of L. strumosus. The main features of L. strumosus are compared with those of the staphilinid myrmecophile Lomechusa (formerly Atemeles) pubicollis. The paper concludes with a description of the life trajectory of L. strumosus and presents a brief history and discussion of the hypotheses concerning the evolution of myrmecophily in L. strumosus and other highly adapted myrmecophilous parasites. Forty-three species and two subspecies of the genus Myopias Roger, 1861 have been known from the Australian, Oceanian, Oriental, and southern Sino-Japanese realms. Among them, four species are known from Borneo. In this paper three new species are described from Sabah (East Malaysia), Borneo, based on the worker caste and dealate gyne: Myopias etsukoae, new species, Myopias striaticeps, new species, and Myopias suwannaphaki, new species. Island systems are known to harbor disproportionate amounts of geographically restricted biodiversity and to experience high rates of species loss, and they ultimately represent critical systems with significant conservation values. However, knowledge of the biodiversity value of insular systems remains highly fragmented and incomplete for many groups of organisms, especially insects. This gap limits our understanding of their global significance for biodiversity and inhibits prioritization for future exploration and conservation efforts. Here, we developed a new database to present current knowledge on ants on 2678 islands globally, based on nominal species, and provide information on their native or exotic status. In total, this database contains 7010 ant species (44.6% of the known global ant fauna) that have been recorded on islands globally from 449,232 records. In addition, this database identifies 108 large islands (area > 200 km2) that have received no ant sampling efforts globally. This new data set provides the most comprehensive understanding of ant diversity and composition on islands globally, opening up new opportunities to address questions on a multitude of research questions and fields related to biogeography, ecology, and evolution. This data set also provides a roadmap for future exploration and conservation actions in connection with ants on islands as well as overall ant diversity, with updates available as new records and taxonomic updates are published.
